A qualitative evaluation of pediatric conjunctivitis medical decision making and opportunities to improve care.

BACKGROUND: Acute infectious conjunctivitis is a common childhood illness, and the role of antibiotic treatment remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to describe the decision-making process providers use when managing infectious conjunctivitis, to identify factors that reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing, and to evaluate how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced prescribing behavior. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 providers caring for children in primary care, urgent cares, and emergency departments in Denver, Colorado. Interviews were evaluated for major t

An outbreak of conjunctivitis due to atypical Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: In February 2002, clinicians at the Dartmouth College Health Service recognized an outbreak of conjunctivitis; cultures of conjunctival swabs implicated Streptococcus pneumoniae. An investigation was begun to determine the extent of the outbreak, confirm the cause, identify modes of transmission, and implement control measures. METHODS: Investigators reviewed the health service's data base for diagnoses of conjunctivitis. Viral and bacterial cultures were obtained from ill students. Bile-soluble isolates that were susceptible to ethylhydrocupreine (optochin) and therefore were pre

[Treatment of bacterial conjuntivitis with topical ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin: a comparative study].

The authors studied the epidemiology of external ocular infections and the therapeutic efficacy of topical ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin in the treatment of conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Signs and symptoms in two study-group (ciprofloxacin group A = 95 patients and norfloxacin group B = 95 patients) as well as the microbiological data obtained from the conjunctival swab before and after treatment were considered. The clinical and bacteriological success rate in the two study-groups was respectively 91% (group A) and 83% (group B). The results of the present study confirm the therapeutic effi

New antibacterial drugs for topical ophthalmic use.

Three new antibacterial drugs have recently been approved for topical ophthalmic use. Ciprofloxacin (Ciloxan) and norfloxacin (Chibroxin) are fluoroquinolones with very broad activity spectra; both have been found to be safe and effective for the treatment of conjunctivitis. Ciprofloxacin, in the commercially available concentration (0.3%), has also been found to be a safe and effective treatment for corneal ulcers. Trimethoprim-polymyxin B (Polytrim) is a new combination product that has been used successfully for the treatment of conjunctivitis. Use of these three new drugs will significantl

Uncommon pathogen, common activity: Streptococcus pneumoniae conjunctivitis outbreak traced to a primary school field trip.

BACKGROUND: In December 2025, an outbreak of acute conjunctivitis emerged at a primary school in Hangzhou, China, affecting 48 students and yielding an attack rate of 2. 16%. The outbreak is of particular significance as it was attributed to Streptococcus pneumoniae, a pathogen seldom implicated in large-scale conjunctivitis outbreaks among school-aged children. METHODS: An epidemiological investigation, a case-control study, and laboratory analyses-comprising multiplex real-time PCR and bacterial culture-were conducted to determine the etiological agent and the source of transmission. RESUL

Review of Azithromycin Ophthalmic 1% Solution (AzaSite(®)) for the Treatment of Ocular Infections.

AzaSite(®) (azithromomycin 1.0%) ophthalmic solution was approved in 2007 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first commercially available formulation of ophthalmic azithromycin for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. AzaSite(®) utilizes a vehicle delivery system called DuraSite(®), which stabilizes and sustains the release of azithromycin to the ocular surface, leading to a longer drug residence time, less frequent dosing, and an increase in patient compliance. AzaSite(®) is a broad spectrum antibiotic, effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical bacter

Ophthalmia neonatorum as the presenting sign of SARS-CoV-2.

The most common ocular manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 in adults and children is acute conjunctivitis. We report the case of a 4-day-old infant who presented with acute-onset mucopurulent discharge of the left eye as well as subconjunctival hemorrhage and palpebral injection, without corneal findings. A diagnosis of ophthalmia neonatorum was established, for which ocular cultures and Gram staining were performed. No bacterial growth was noted, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhea, and herpes simplex were negative. Nasopharyngeal and conjunctiva

Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution versus rifamycin ophthalmic solution for the treatment of conjunctivitis and blepharitis.

The efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin (0.3%) ophthalmic solution and rifamycin (1%) ophthalmic solution for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis was compared in this randomized, double-masked, parallel-group study. Forty-one patients, 19 on ciprofloxacin and 22 on rifamycin, were culture-positive on admission and evaluated for efficacy. There was clinical improvement in more than 90% of patients in each group at the end of the seven-day treatment period. However, clinical cure rates on day 7 appeared to be higher with ciprofloxacin (53%) than rifamycin (23%; p = 0.061,

Trachoma in Punjab: a study of the prevalence and of mass treatment.

During the years 1971-1974 the prevalence of trachoma in the state of Punjab/Northwest-India was investigated among 11,172 persons of all age-groups. The overall prevalence came to 71,07%. Active and progressive stages (WHO stages I and II) were most common among children and adolescents, whereas complicated cases (WHO stage IV) were found predominantly beyond 45 years of age. Regressive cases (WHO stage III) were equally distributed throughout all ages. To our opinion bacterial conjunctivitis is an important factor preceding the infection with the TRIC-agent. Bacterial conjunctivitis is favou

Primary conjunctival follicular lymphoma mimicking chronic conjunctivitis.

CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a 43 year-old male patient with chronic follicular conjunctivitis, negative bacterial serology, and refractory to local treatment. The incisional biopsy performed showed to be consistent with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. A year later, a new incisional biopsy showed follicular lymphoma, with no systemic involvement, and he was treated with local radiotherapy. DISCUSSION: When a chronic follicular conjunctivitis is refractory to treatment, it is essential to perform an incisional biopsy to establish the histopathological diagnosis that can range from ch

Infantile Acute Conjunctivitis Induced by β-Lactamase-Positive Amoxicillin-Clavulanate-Resistant Strain of Haemophilus influenzae: A Report of Three Cases.

This study is a retrospectively recruited case series. We report three infants with acute conjunctivitis induced by β-lactamase-positive, ampicillin/clavulanic acid-resistant strains of Haemophilus influenzae (BLPACR). Patients with BLPACR-positive cultures were recruited from among 5,107 patients with inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface who underwent examinations, including bacterial culturing of conjunctival sac or corneal scrapings, between 2000 and 2015. Three BLPACR-positive patients were recruited, including a 10-month-old boy, a 4-month-old girl, and a 7-month-old girl. All thre
