Acute bacterial conjunctivitis - antibiotic susceptibility and resistance to commercially available topical antibiotics in Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: There is a shifting trend in susceptibility and resistance of the bacteria towards available antibiotics in the last decade. Therefore, periodic studies to monitor the emerging trends in antibiotic susceptibility and resistance are crucial in guiding antibiotic selection. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the most common pathogens causing bacterial conjunctivitis, and to find the in vitro susceptibility and resistance of these pathogens to commercially available topical antibiotic eye drops in Nepal. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Conjunctival smears and antibiotic sens

Symptoms and signs of conjunctivitis as predictors of disease course in COVID-19 syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can induce conjunctivitis signs and symptoms. However, limited information is available on their impact on COVID-19 disease phenotype. Quantification of ocular signs/symptoms can provide a rapid, non-invasive proxy for predicting clinical phenotype. Moreover, the existence and entity of conjunctival viral shedding is still debated. This has relevant implications to manage disease spread. The purpose of this study was to investigate conjunctivitis signs and symptoms and their correlation with clinical parameters, conjuncti

An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to Coxsackievirus A24 in a residential school, Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh: July 2023.

PURPOSE: An acute conjunctivitis outbreak was investigated at a residential school in Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India, in July 2023. We aimed to identify the etiological agent and assess any complications in follow-up cases. METHODS: We used a structured questionnaire to record clinical findings and followed up with cases one-month post-conjunctivitis. Sixty-one cases were examined and eight conjunctival and oropharyngeal swab samples were collected after obtaining informed consent from guardians/school authorities. We screened for 33 viral and bacterial pathogens using an IVD-

An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) caused by coxsackievirus A24 variant in Pakistan.

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) is a self-limiting viral infection of the eyes but having epidemic potential. In winter 2004-2005, an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred in Islamabad, Pakistan. The etiological agent was confirmed as coxsackievirus A24 variant (CA24v) by virus isolation and sequencing of a part of the VP1/VP3 gene. Phylogenetic analysis in VP1 region showed that Pakistan isolates has closest matches both in Asia and Europe while in VP1/VP3 region they were more closely related to Chinese strains, suggesting their common source in Asia which is con

Molecular characterization of coxsackievirus A24 variants isolated from an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: Acute Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) is associated with CVA24v. Recently there was a severe outbreak of conjunctivitis in months of July and August 2023 in India. This study emphasizes the identification of the distinct mutations in the CVA24v strains, which were isolated during the AHC outbreak and could have potentially played a role in the high transmission of AHC in India during the 2023 outbreak. METHODS: A total of 71 conjunctivitis patients aged 1-75 years comprising 47 males and 24 females who attended Ophthalmology department of a tertiary care hospital of easternIndia wer

Evaluation of the rabbit as a laboratory model for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus infection.

Experimental infection of rabbits with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) produced diverse manifestations of disease which included abortion, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, vulvovaginitis, systemic infection, neonatal death and respiratory tract infection. Each disease syndrome was studied using virus isolation, fluorescent antibody examination and histologic examination. Conjunctivitis, dermatitis and vulvovaginitis lesions were characterized by edema, infiltration of mucosa and submucosa with inflammatory cells and ulceration of epithelium. Systemic infection resulted in severe necr

Echovirus keratoconjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: To investigate an outbreak of echovirus-related keratoconjunctivitis. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study of recent cases of echovirus infection with recall and further evaluation of conjunctivitis patients. All patients from whom an echovirus was isolated in Liverpool during 1995 were included. The natural course of ocular echovirus disease was studied, including the likelihood of echovirus keratoconjunctivitis being linked with meningitis and the risk of long-term carriage of the virus in the conjunctiva. RESULTS: Of 10 unrelated patients with echovirus conjunctivitis, six

Differential diagnosis of pediatric conjunctivitis (red eye).

Because eye injuries and diseases may potentially result in serious vision impairments, accurate diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic conditions are imperative. A symptom common to eye impairments is conjunctivitis, or red eye, a commonly seen manifestation in an ambulatory pediatric population. Because conjunctivitis is caused by various etiologies, clinicians must derive a differential diagnosis. This article examines possible causes of conjunctivitis after the neonatal period in this population. Differential diagnosis is dependent on a complete history, distinct physical findings, and use

Detection of herpes simplex virus and human papilloma virus in ophthalmic pterygium.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human papilloma virus (HPV) in pterygia and phenotypically normal conjunctiva and the possible relation between viral presence and clinical information. METHODS: Fifty pterygia and respective conjunctival specimens were obtained. A personal and family history was recorded for each patient. HSV and HPV detection and typing were accomplished by polymerase chain reaction amplification of viral sequences. Results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: HSV (type 1) was detected in 11 (22%), HPV (type 18) in 12 (24%), and both HSV-
