The politics of medical expertise and substance control: WHO consultants for addiction rehabilitation and pharmacy education in Thailand and India during the Cold War.

This paper explores the role of World Health Organization (WHO) medical experts in ambitious projects for substance control during the Cold War in Thailand and India. The circumstances surrounding opium production in these two nations were very different, as were the reasons for requesting expert assistance from the United Nations. Whereas the Thai military regime was concerned with controlling illicit traffic to secure its borders, the Indian government wanted to direct its opium raw materials towards domestic pharmaceutical production. Overlapping and sometimes competing agendas of country g

Cumulative risk factors for injuries and poisoning requiring hospital care in youth with prenatal substance exposure: A longitudinal controlled cohort study.

Aim: To investigate whether the youth with prenatal substance exposure (PSE) (aged 15-24 years, n = 615) had been in hospital care more often due to injuries and poisoning in comparison with unexposed matched controls (n = 1787). Methods: Data from medical records (exposure) and national health and social welfare registers (outcome and confounders) were combined and youths were monitored from birth until either outpatient or inpatient hospital care for injury or poisoning, death or the end of the study period (December 2016). Cox regression models were used in the analyses accounting for assoc

Examining protective factors for substance use problems and self-harm behavior during adolescence: A longitudinal co-twin control study.

Sports participation, physical activity, and friendship quality are theorized to have protective effects on the developmental emergence of substance use and self-harm behavior in adolescence, but existing research has been mixed. This ambiguity could reflect, in part, the potential for confounding of observed associations by genetic and environmental factors, which previous research has been unable to rigorously rule out. We used data from the prospective, population-based Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (n = 18,234 born 1994-2001) and applied a co-twin control design to account for

Unconditional cash transfers and maternal substance use: findings from a randomized control trial of low-income mothers with infants in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Policy debates over anti-poverty programs are often marked by pernicious stereotypes suggesting that direct cash transfers to people residing in poverty encourage health-risking behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and other substance use. Causal evidence on this issue is limited in the U.S. Given the prominent role of child allowances and other forms of cash assistance in the 2021 American Rescue Plan and proposed Build Back Better legislation, evidence on the extent to which a monthly unconditional cash gift changes substance use patterns among low-income mothers with infants war

Dynamic control of pentachlorophenol photodegradation process using P25/PDA/BiOBr through regulation of photo-induced active substances and chemiluminescence.

Photodegradation is a new approach for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Photooxidation degradation (using hydroxyl radicals) exhibits better performance to remove PCP than photoreduction degradation, but the former will lead to an increase in the production of toxic by-products such as tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ). Thus, a new strategy is required to enhance PCP photodegradation and simultaneously inhibit toxic intermediates production. Herein, TiO2 (P25)/polydopamine (PDA)/BiOBr was synthesized and used to photodegrade PCP. Based on the relative position of the CB and VB of P25

Analysis of dermal exposure assessment in the US Environmental Protection Agency Toxic Substances Control Act risk evaluations of chemical manufacturing.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates chemical manufacture, import, processing, distribution, use, and disposal under the 2016 amended Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for the purposes of protecting the public and sensitive populations-including workers-from chemical exposure risk. The publication of several TSCA risk evaluations provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the evolving regulatory approach for assessing the dermal exposure pathway in occupational settings. In this analysis, the occupational dermal exposure assessment methods employed in several TSCA

Culturally sensitive prevention programs for substance use among adolescents of color: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize the efficacy of culturally sensitive prevention programs for substance use outcomes among U.S. adolescents of color (aged 11 to 18 years old) and explore whether the intervention effects vary by participant and intervention characteristics. Eight electronic databases and grey literature were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials through September 2022. Robust variance estimation in meta-regression was used to synthesize treatment effect size estimates and to conduct moderator analysis. After screening, 30 unique studies w

Medical toxicology and public health-update on research and activities at the centers for disease control and prevention and the agency for toxic substances and disease registry.

An extensive review of CDC epidemiological responses to human outbreaks of anthrax from occupational settings between the years of 1950 and 2001 documented a variety of approaches to mitigation and decontamination [2]. These approaches included taking no action, burning contaminated materials, chlorinating water supplies, instituting administrative and engineering controls and PPE, vaccinating potentially exposed individuals, and in 2 instances, fumigating with formaldehyde vapor (now considered to be a human carcinogen). Secondary contamination of a worker's home was documented in 1 case, but

Protocol for a feasibility study, without control group, of a combined treatment for PTSD and difficulties in emotion regulation for patients with substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: There are high rates of co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among patients in treatment for substance use disorder (SUD). PTSD and SUD should be treated simultaneously, which is rarely the case. The reluctance to offer trauma-focused treatment is partially due to fear of increased risk of dropout. PTSD is related to emotion dysregulation and elevated psychological burden, higher dropout rates and increased risk of relapse. In this project, we plan to assess if it is relevant, feasible, acceptable and safe to add a combination of narrative exposure therapy (NET) and d

User Experiences of Electronic Controlled Substance Surveillance Among Health Care Professionals in a Large Academic Hospital: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Controlled substances are commonly used as analgesics or to treat neurodevelopmental disorders in health care, but they also pose a risk of drug abuse and diversion. Therefore, the distribution and handling of controlled substances are strictly regulated, and hospital pharmacies are required to manage their surveillance in hospital settings. Between 2018 and 2021, a large Finnish academic hospital implemented a new electronic health record system enabling the digitalization of paper-based controlled substance surveillance. By November 2023, the electronic narcotic consumption card …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances levels other than PFOS, PFOA, or PFHxS and liver cancer risk: a nested case-control analysis.

Epidemiologic studies of PFAS and liver cancer risk have produced conflicting results with no strong or clear associations for pre-diagnostic perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS). We now report analyses of nine additional PFAS in a nested case-control study within 12 prospective cohorts (853 cases, 853 matched controls) in the United States. Using multivariable-adjusted conditional logistic regression, we estimated odds ratios per 90th vs. 10th percentile increase in PFAS levels. Perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) was positively associat

LC-HRMS screening procedure for the detection of 11 different classes of prohibited substances in dried urine spots for doping control purposes.

Dried urine spots have recently been proposed as an alternative matrix in the anti-doping field. Drying urine may open the opportunity to limit microbial and thermal degradation of the prohibited substances during transportation to the anti-doping laboratories without the need for refrigeration or freezing. In this study, a multi-targeted initial testing procedure was developed for the determination of 237 prohibited drugs/metabolites from 11 different classes in dried urine spots. The comparability between two different microsampling techniques (i.e., Whatman® FTA DMPK-C cards and Mitra® tips

Circulating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and risk of pancreatic cancer: A nested case-control study within the NYU Women's health study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental chemicals that have been linked to pancreatic cancer in animal studies, but evidence in humans remains limited. We evaluated associations between pre-diagnostic circulating concentrations of 11 PFAS and pancreatic cancer risk in a nested case-control study within the New York University Women's Health Study, a prospective cohort of 14,273 women. Serum samples collected prior to diagnosis from 116 pancreatic cancer cases and 346 matched controls were analyzed for PFAS levels. Associations between individual PFAS and pancrea

Association between per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A nested case-control study in northwest China.

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been reported to have hepatotoxic effects. However, it is unclear whether they are linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This nested case-control study focused on the epidemiological links between PFAS and the prevalence of NAFLD. We selected 476 new cases of NAFLD and 952 age- and sex-matched controls from the Jinchang cohort population between 2014 and 2019. Serum concentrations of PFAS were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Only PFAS with a detection rate of ≥90 % were
