BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia, which is a sign of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), can irreversibly damage the central nervous system.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the etiology of HDN in affected patients and characterize the changing pattern of bilirubin using direct antiglobulin testing (DAT).

The response rates and overall survival of hairy cell leukemia has changed remarkably with cladribine. Twenty patients diagnosed as hairy cell leukemia over a 5 year period were evaluated. Median age of the patients was 52.5 years. Splenomegaly was seen in 85% and hepatomegaly in 50% patients. At presentation, pancytopenia was seen in 45% and bicytopenia in 20% patients. A case of severe immune haemolytic anaemia in a 54-year-old man suffering from Mycoplasma pneumonia is presented. A strongly positive direct Coombs test with erythrocyte bound IgG, C3d and C4 was demonstrated during the haemolytic process. One hundred and two patients with either rheumatoid arthritis or osteo-arthrosis were treated for prolonged periods with diclophenac sodium (Voltaren; Geigy) to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of the drug.
