Pathways to effective network governance: A fuzzy-set QCA study of tripartite collaboration efficiency with Chinese official Weibo data.

In response to the insufficient research on multiagent collaboration mechanisms in existing network governance studies, this paper identifies the key influencing factors of the tripartite collaboration efficiency using the Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method, and employs Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to reveal the collaborative pathways of multiple factors. The 2022 Government Affairs Index Weibo Influence Report issued by the Chinese government is used as the primary data source, selecting five dimensions: platform support, public participation, service level, response

Cooperation and social organization depend on weighing private and public reputations.

To avoid exploitation by defectors, people can use past experiences with others when deciding to cooperate or not ('private information'). Alternatively, people can derive others' reputation from 'public' information provided by individuals within the social network. However, public information may be aligned or misaligned with one's own private experiences and different individuals, such as 'friends' and 'enemies', may have different opinions about the reputation of others. Using evolutionary agent-based simulations, we examine how cooperation and social organization is shaped when agents (1)

Early exclusion leads to cyclical cooperation in repeated group interactions.

Explaining the emergence and maintenance of cooperation among selfish individuals from an evolutionary perspective remains a grand challenge in biology, economy and social sciences. Social exclusion is believed to be an answer to this conundrum. However, previously related studies often assume one-shot interactions and ignore how free-riding is identified, which seem to be too idealistic. In this work, we consider repeated interactions where excluders need to pay a monitoring cost to identify free-riders for exclusion and free-riders cannot participate in the following possible game interactio

Evolutionary advantages of turning points in human cooperative behaviour.

Cooperation is crucial to overcome some of the most pressing social challenges of our times, such as the spreading of infectious diseases, corruption and environmental conservation. Yet, how cooperation emerges and persists is still a puzzle for social scientists. Since human cooperation is individually costly, cooperative attitudes should have been eliminated by natural selection in favour of selfishness. Yet, cooperation is common in human societies, so there must be some features which make it evolutionarily advantageous. Using a cognitive inspired model of human cooperation, recent work Re

ENT audit and research in the era of trainee collaboratives.

Large surgical audits and research projects are complex and costly to deliver, but increasingly surgical trainees are delivering these projects within formal collaboratives and research networks. Surgical trainee collaboratives are now recognised as a valuable part of the research infrastructure, with many perceived benefits for both the trainees and the wider surgical speciality. In this article, we describe the activity of ENT trainee research collaboratives within the UK, and summarise how INTEGRATE, the UK National ENT Trainee Research Network, successfully delivered a national audit of ep

Justine effect: punishment of the unduly self-sacrificing cooperative individuals.

BACKGROUND: Allowing players to punish their opponents in Public Goods Game sustains cooperation within a group and thus brings advantage to the cooperative individuals. However, the possibility of punishment of the co-players can result in antisocial punishment, the punishment of those players who contribute the most in the group. To better understand why antisocial punishment exists, it must be determined who are the anti-social punishers and who are their primary targets. METHODS: For resolving these questions we increased the number of players in a group from usual four to twelve. Each gr

Conclusions and future directions for the REiNS International Collaboration.

The Response Evaluation in Neurofibromatosis and Schwannomatosis (REiNS) International Collaboration was established with the goal to develop consensus recommendations for the use of endpoints in neurofibromatosis (NF) clinical trials. This supplement includes the first series of REiNS recommendations for the use of patient-reported, functional, and visual outcomes, and for the evaluation of imaging response in NF clinical trials. Recommendations for neurocognitive outcome measures, the use of whole-body MRI in NF, the evaluation of potential biomarkers of disease, and the comprehensive evalua

The evolution of punishment in n-player public goods games: a volunteer's dilemma.

The evolution of punishment to stabilize cooperation in n-player games has been treated as a second-order social dilemma, where contributions to punishment of free-riders are altruistic. Hence it may only evolve under highly restricted conditions. Here, we build on recent insights using the volunteer's dilemma as an alternative payoff matrix for the evolution of cooperation. The key feature of a volunteer's dilemma is that the benefits of cooperation are a nonlinear function of the number of contributors, meaning that cooperation is negatively frequency dependent. We propose that nonlinear ret

How is human cooperation different?

Although cooperation is a widespread phenomenon in nature, human cooperation exceeds that of all other species with regard to the scale and range of cooperative activities. Here we review and discuss differences between humans and non-humans in the strategies employed to maintain cooperation and control free-riders. We distinguish forms of cooperative behaviour based on their influence on the immediate payoffs of actor and recipient. If the actor has immediate costs and only the recipient obtains immediate benefits, we term this investment. If the behaviour has immediate positive effects for b

Neglected tropical disease vaccines.

The neglected tropical diseases or 'NTDs' represent the most common infections of the world's one billion poorest people. Unlike the better known acute or emerging infections, the NTDs are generally chronic and disabling (and often disfiguring) conditions. The long-term disability they cause has been revealed as a major reason why poor people in developing countries cannot escape the poverty trap. Because NTDs are associated with poverty, vaccines against these conditions are sometimes referred to as antipoverty vaccines. However, despite their global public health and economic importance, suc

Breakthrough thinking from inside the box.

Companies often begin their search for great ideas either by encouraging wild, outside-the-box thinking or by conducting quantitative analysis of existing market and financial data and customer opinions. Those approaches can produce middling ideas at best, say Coyne, founder of an executive-counseling firm in Atlanta, and Clifford and Dye, strategy experts at McKinsey. The problem with the first method is that few people are very good at unstructured, abstract brainstorming. The problems with the second are that databases are usually compiled to describe current--not future--offerings, and cus

The efficient interaction of indirect reciprocity and costly punishment.

Human cooperation in social dilemmas challenges researchers from various disciplines. Here we combine advances in experimental economics and evolutionary biology that separately have shown that costly punishment and reputation formation, respectively, induce cooperation in social dilemmas. The mechanisms of punishment and reputation, however, substantially differ in their means for 'disciplining' non-cooperators. Direct punishment incurs salient costs for both the punisher and the punished, whereas reputation mechanisms discipline by withholding action, immediately saving costs for the 'punish

Hereditary dysautonomias: current knowledge and collaborations for the future.

The hereditary dysautonomias (H-Dys) are a large group of disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system. Research in the field of H-Dys is very challenging, because the disorders involve interdisciplinary, integrative, and "mind-body" connections. Recently, medical scientists, NIH/NINDS representatives, and several patient support groups gathered for the first time in order to discuss recent findings and future directions in the H-Dys field. The H-Dys workshop was instrumental in promoting interactions between basic science and clinical investigators. It also allowed attendees to have an

Collaborative research into outcome measures in Sjögren's syndrome. Update on disease assessment.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a multisystem immune-mediated disorder characterized by inflammation of exocrine glands leading to clinical symptoms of dryness, particularly of the eyes and mouth which can be severe and disabling. It can occur in association with other rheumatic disorders or as a primary entity (PSS), often associated with B-cell hyperreactivity manifested by hypergammaglobulinaemia and anti-Ro and/or anti-La autoantibodies. These patients are more likely to have systemic involvement, for example of the pulmonary, neurological or haematological systems, and have a 44 times increase

Autism Symptoms Modulate Interpersonal Neural Synchronization in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Cooperative Interactions.

Previous neuroscience studies exploring the neural mechanisms of social deficits of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have mainly examined single participants' brain responses to pictures or video-clips displayed on a monitor from the perspective of a passive observer. The present study examined inter-brain communication between children with ASD and their parents in a socio-interactive context. We used a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based hyperscanning technique to simultaneously measure the prefrontal activations in 16 pairs of children with ASD and their paren

Empathy and mentalization as mediators between childhood maltreatment and social decision-making during adulthood.

Childhood maltreatment is a highly prevalent form of early adversity with long-lasting consequences for social and emotional functioning. While previous work has established links between maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, little is known about how these processes shape adult social decision-making. In this study, 327 adults completed validated self-report measures of childhood maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, along with a series of economic games designed to assess cooperation and punishment. We found that greater severity of childhood maltreatment was selectively associated w

It Takes Two to Regulate: Neural and Behavioral Synchrony Relate to Child Externalizing and Internalizing Profiles.

Parent-child interactions contribute to children's behavioral development and may buffer against psychopathology. Less is known about behavioral and neural alignment's association to development. Therefore, we examined behavioral and neural synchrony's relation to child behavioral problems. Parent-child behavioral synchrony was measured by Mutually Responsive Orientation coding, capturing coordinated routines, mutual cooperation, emotional ambiance, and harmonious communication. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning was used to measure parent-child neural synchrony in the temporo

Individual differences in spite predict costly third-party punishment.

OBJECTIVE: Spiteful behaviors are those aimed at inflicting harm on another person while also incurring a cost to the self. Although spite sometimes reflects destructive and socially undesirable behaviors including aggression, the current work sought to examine a potentially socially beneficial aspect of spite: engagement in costly punishment for selfish behavior. METHOD: Four studies used a costly third-party punishment task and measured individual differences in spite, narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and motivations for engaging in punishment. RESULTS: Trait spite was positively

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the LTPJ shifts the agent's behaviors in repeated hold-up game.

The Hold-up problem is very common in transactions with specific investment in incomplete contractual relationships, which is affected by human trusting, cooperative, altruistic behavior. Recent neuroscience studies have shown that TPJ plays an important role in social cognition and prosocial decision-making. However, most of the studies have focused on RTPJ in the right hemisphere, while few studies have focused on LTPJ in the left hemisphere. The purpose of this study is to modulate the excitability of LTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and to explore the effects of
