Zooplankton sensitivity and phytoplankton regrowth for ballast water treatment with advanced oxidation processes.

The ballasting and de-ballasting of ships are two necessary operations with ballast water that provide stability for safe navigation. Empty ships must ballast tanks with water, which contains living organisms and subsequently carries them away from their original distribution. De-ballasting represents an input of still viable zooplankton, phytoplankton, and microorganisms in the destination port, leading to the introduction of alien species, and consequently, the introduction of organisms will alter the local biodiversity. Ballast water treatment is necessary to comply with the International M

Susceptibility, behaviour, and retention of the parasitic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) differ with Atlantic salmon population origin.

Atlantic salmon populations across the world have diverse ecological and evolutionary histories, from wild anadromous or landlocked, to domestication and genetic modification. The natural host behaviours confer protection from infestation by ectoparasitic salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis, yet whether genetic origin results in different behaviours and thus susceptibility to infestation is unknown. In common garden experiments, we tested antiparasite behaviours, susceptibility and retention of salmon lice in wild anadromous, wild landlocked, domesticated and genetically modified domesticated

Using Agent-Based Modelling to Predict the Role of Wild Refugia in the Evolution of Resistance of Sea Lice to Chemotherapeutants.

A major challenge for Atlantic salmon farming in the northern hemisphere is infestation by the sea louse parasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis. The most frequent method of controlling these sea louse infestations is through the use of chemical treatments. However, most major salmon farming areas have observed resistance to common chemotherapeutants. In terrestrial environments, many strategies employed to manage the evolution of resistance involve the use of refugia, where a portion of the population is left untreated to maintain susceptibility. While refugia have not been deliberately used in Atla

Modeling filtration of dispersed crude oil droplets by the copepod Calanus finmarchicus.

Oil droplets may form and disperse in the water column after an accidental spill of crude oil or petroleum products at sea. Micro-sized oil droplets may be available for filter feeding organisms, such as the copepod Calanus finmarchicus, which has been shown to filter oil droplets. In the present paper, a modeling approach was used to estimate potential ingestion amounts by copepod filtration of oil droplets. The new model was implemented in the OSCAR (Oil Spill Contingency and Response) software suite, and tested for a series of oil spill scenarios and key parameters. Among these, the size of

Impact of Lepeophtheirus salmonis infestations on migrating Atlantic salmon , Salmo salar L., smolts at eight locations in Ireland with an analysis of lice-induced marine mortality.

Sea lice infestation as a source of marine mortality of outwardly migrating Atlantic salmon smolts has been investigated by treating groups of ranched salmon, prior to release, with a prophylactic sea lice treatment conferring protection from sea lice infestation. A number of studies have been carried out in Ireland using both established ranched populations and groups of hatchery reared fish imprinted for 5-8 weeks in the sites of experimental releases. In this study, data on 352 142 migrating salmon from twenty-eight releases, at eight locations along Ireland's South and West coasts covering

Modelling salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, reproduction on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

The aim of this study was to model sea lice levels and the effect on reproduction by a stochastic simulation model and to evaluate the uncertainty of lice estimates based upon counts. Two empirical data sets were examined to parameterize the models. An overall fit of the data to the Poisson distribution was found and thus was used as the base of the stochastic models. In the model, salmon lice reproduction is not linear with the number of adult females and at low lice loads a smaller proportion of the adult female lice will reproduce. Depending on the variance structure, it was estimated that

Morphological characterization and intraspecific variation of Zoothamnium intermedium Precht, 1935 (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) attached to calanoid copepods in the Chesapeake Bay, USA.

A redescription of Zoothamnium intermedium Precht, 1935, a peritrich epibiont on copepods, is provided using specimens colonizing Acartia tonsa and Eurytemora affinis in Chesapeake Bay, USA. Bell-shaped zooids of Z. intermedium ranged in size from 31.2-54.7 microm x 16.7-31.3 microm in vivo. A single contractile vacuole and a "C shaped" macronucleus lie in the upper half of the body. Colonies had up to 30 zooids, but most presented two to four zooids. The single myoneme was continuous from the zooids through the lateral branches and basal stalk, terminating 4-73.2 mm before the attachment poin

Variation in infection parameters among populations within parasite species: intrinsic properties versus local factors.

Within any parasite species, variation among populations in standard infection parameters (prevalence, intensity and abundance) is an accepted fact. The proportion of hosts infected and the mean number of parasites per host are not fixed values across the entire geographic range of any parasite species. The question is whether this inter-population variation occurs within a narrow, species-specific range and is thus driven mainly by the biological features of the parasite, or whether it is substantial and unpredictable, leaving population parameters at the mercy of local conditions. Here, the

Waterborne zoonotic helminthiases.

This review deals with waterborne zoonotic helminths, many of which are opportunistic parasites spreading directly from animals to man or man to animals through water that is either ingested or that contains forms capable of skin penetration. Disease severity ranges from being rapidly fatal to low-grade chronic infections that may be asymptomatic for many years. The most significant zoonotic waterborne helminthic diseases are either snail-mediated, copepod-mediated or transmitted by faecal-contaminated water. Snail-mediated helminthiases described here are caused by digenetic trematodes that u

Effect of environmental salinity on sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis settlement success.

The sea louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) (Copepoda: Caligidae) is an ectoparasite of salmonid fish. It has earlier been proposed that the free-swimming infectious copepodid stage of L. salmonis gather at river mouths to infect wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. and sea trout S. trutta L. smolts during their seaward migration. This study used aquarium-based methods to investigate the survival, infective ability and behaviour of L. salmonis copepodids exposed to short periods of low salinity levels, such as those encountered at river mouths. Survival of free-swimming copepodids was …

Genetic assimilation and accommodation shape adaptation to heat stress in a splash pool copepod.

Understanding organismal responses to dynamic environments is becoming increasingly important in our rapidly changing world. Beyond genetic adaptation, plastic responses to the environment can alter phenotypes and fitness, ultimately driving evolution. However, the interaction between plasticity and adaptation during environmental change is complex and hard to measure in natural systems. Here, we used two populations of Tigriopus californicus copepods, a thermally tolerant southern population and a thermally sensitive northern population, to conduct a fully factorial, split-brood experiment wh

Parasites perform poorly at high host densities: an experimental test in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

The link between host density and parasite population size is well-established. However, while high host density facilitates parasite transmission, it may negatively impact parasites through more intense competition and/or more intense host immune defence. We assessed the performance of individually tagged female salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), an ectoparasite of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), under experimental low and high host density conditions, the latter mimicking salmon aquaculture conditions. Lice at high density exhibit greater pre-reproductive mortality, reduced growth, delaye

Differential Effects of Adult Salmon Lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis on Physiological Responses of Sockeye Salmon and Atlantic Salmon.

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis, a type of sea lice (family Caligidae), is enzootic in marine waters of British Columbia and poses a health risk to both farmed Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar and wild Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. At the adult stage, sea lice infections can often result in severe cutaneous lesions in their salmonid hosts. To evaluate and compare the physiological consequences of adult L. salmonis infections, smolts of Atlantic Salmon and Sockeye Salmon O. nerka were exposed to 2 (low), 6 (medium), or 10 (high) adult female lice/fish. Mean lice abundance decreased over

First investigation of trace metal distribution in surface seawater and copepods of the south coast of Sfax (Tunisia).

The increased metal loading from anthropogenic sources has affected aquatic ecosystems and has cascaded through food webs worldwide. Therefore, the evaluation of ecological impacts of anthropogenic metal has become increasingly important. In this paper, we monitored the concentration of six trace metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the three copepod groups (cyclopoida, calanoida, and harpacticoida) and in seawater samples collected from the south coast of Sfax (Tunisia). Results showed that the concentration of Fe and Zn for all copepod groups was higher than that for other metals and that
