Efficient biomass utilization is constrained by the trade-off between the cell wall stability and deconstructability. Space-mutated Arundo donax L. (MUT) achieves coordinated improvements in both properties. Here, confocal Raman microscopy imaging, chemical composition analysis, and 2D HSQC NMR were integrated to investigate the lignin-hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA)-xylan (LCC) network. Compared with wild-type (WT), MUT exhibited altered monolignol composition and linkages, resulting in a less condensed lignin network and a more homogeneous LCC network. Raman imaging revealed that lignin, HCA, and

The ferulic acid amides, feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine, have been widely reported as integral constituents in the lignins in several species of Solanaceae in which they function as authentic lignin monomers. In the present study, we demonstrate that these ferulic acid amides are likewise incorporated into the lignins of species within Cannabaceae, including hemp (Cannabis sativa), hops (Humulus lupulus), and European nettle tree (Celtis australis). Structural analyses using derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) sp

This study investigated how ferulic acid (FA) affects the aggregation, morphology, and structure of oxidized rice bran protein (RBP).Results showed that FA reduced ThT fluorescence intensity and β-sheet content, caused λmax red shifts, indicating inhibition of protein oxidative aggregation. The aggregation process through three stages based on induction time: initial (0-5 h), growth (10h), and mature (30-50 h). During initial stage, smaller soluble spherical aggregates were observed, and these can be inhibited by FA. During growth stage, aggregates developed into spherical cluster aggregates,

Ferulic acid amides are naturally present in the cell walls of potato (Solanum tuberosum) periderms. In this study, we investigated their modes of incorporation into the periderm cell wall polymers. A lignin/suberin-enriched fraction was isolated and analyzed by GPC, DFRC, and 2D-NMR. The analyses revealed that the lignin domain of this fraction was predominantly composed of G-lignin units, with an H:G:S ratio of 2:70:28 (S/G ratio of 0.40). More importantly, the data also indicated the presence of two ferulic acid amides, feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine, that are incorporated into the

The study explored ferulic acid extraction from palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) fiber using deep eutectic solvent (DES) of chlorine chloride-acetic acid as the extraction medium and the way to recover and recycle the DES thereafter. Antisolvent was added to selectively precipitate the ferulic acid, which was recovered by filtration thereafter. Recycling the DES without further purification led to increased ferulic acid yield with each subsequent extraction, likely due to retained ferulic acid. The retained ferulic acid and other impurities could be removed by precipitation brought upon by the add

The objective of the current research was to analyze the physicochemical, structural, and in vitro starch digestibility of Euryale ferox kernel starch (EFKS) in complexation with ferulic acid (FA) and quercetin (QR). XRD results have shown that FA and QR were attached to starch resulting crystalline complexes. SEM image showed a smooth, compact structure, indicating FA and QR assist in the reorganization of starch molecules. The 1H NMR spectra of starch-polyphenols complexes showed multiple additional peaks between 6.00 and 9.00 ppm due to the benzene ring and phenolic hydroxyl groups imparted

This article reviews microbial esterases participating in the degradation of the major plant hemicellulose, xylan. The main chain of this polysaccharide built of β-1,4-glycosidically linked xylopyranosyl residues is substituted by other sugars and also partially acetylated. Besides esters of acetic acid, there are two other types of ester linkages in plant xylans. L-Arabinofuranosyl side chains form esters with phenolic acids, predominantly with ferulic acid. The dimerization of ferulic acid residues leads to cross-links connecting the hemicellulose molecules. Ferulic acid cross-links were sho

Owing to its flavoring, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic nature, vanillin is widely used in foods, beverages, perfumes and pharmaceutical products. Ferulic acid (FA) is an important precursor of vanillin which is abundant in cereals like maize, rice and wheat and sugar beet. A major drawback of microbial vanillin production from FA is the degradation and biotransformation of toxic vanillin to other phenolic derivatives. The present study is undertaken to explore microbial vanillin production from FA precursor rice bran by employing vanillin-resistant Pediococcus acidilactici BD1

Inborn errors of tyrosine metabolism result in patient's inability to degrade tyrosine. Current treatment consists of a phenylalanine and tyrosine restricted diet and nitisinone, causing a block in the tyrosine degradation pathway. However, tyrosine levels will increase, leading to acquired hypertyrosinemia, implying the need for an add-on treatment. Tyrosine ammonia lyases (TAL) can provide such an add-on treatment as they catalyze the deamination of tyrosine into p-coumaric acid and ammonia. In this study, we developed a robust high-throughput screening (HTS) assay to assess the capacity of

Food supplements based on antioxidants and vitamins are often prescribed to correct inefficiencies in the human diet and delay diseases such as premature aging and alopecia (temporary or permanent hair loss), given the free radical scavenging activity of these biomolecules. By reducing the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which promote abnormal hair follicle cycling and morphology, follicle inflammation and oxidative stress are reduced, minimising the effects of these health issues. Gallic acid (GA), which is significantly present in gallnuts and in pomegranate root bark, and fe

INTRODUCTION: Curcumin is a naturally occurring compound with anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, antidiabetic, and antioxidant properties. Curcumin can be biosynthesized in microbial hosts despite being found natively in Curcuma longa roots.
OBJECTIVES: It is unclear whether curcumin is transported out of microbial cells, binds to the inner or outer cell membrane, or accumulates inside. This study aims to gain a better understanding of curcumin's behavior after its formation in the host, which could lead to the development of new approaches to improve curcumin production.

The intake of dietary fibers is related with important benefits for human health. We produced two different arabinoxylan fibers with (FAX) and without ferulic acid linked (AX), 12.5 and 0.1 mg g-1 of ferulic acid respectively, by subcritical water extraction of wheat bran. Both FAX and AX fibers were used as supplement in bread production, while non-supplemented bread was used as control. Through an enzymatic deconstruction process we investigated the effect of bread making on the fibers, the preservation of their molecular structure (A/X ratio of 0.13 and Mw of 105 Da) and the interaction wit
