AIM: to characterise outpatients of a Portuguese central hospital diagnosed with organising pneumonia (OP) and compare results with current literature.
METHODS: medical processes with diagnosis of OP were retrospectively studied as to demographics, aetiology, clinical and radiological features, average time until and date of diagnosis, laboratory and histological changes, treatment and relapse. Results - thirteen patients with a mean follow -up of 171.6 weeks (max 334 and min 28 weeks) were evaluated. Nine of these patients (70%) had cryptogenic OP (COP) while 30% had secondary OP (SOP), two

Bucillamine, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, can have adverse effects, including lung injury. Development of interstitial pneumonia during treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can pose a difficult differential diagnosis between a direct manifestation of RA and a drug effect. Our review of previous reports suggested bucillamine-induced interstitial pneumonia in the patient described here, visualized by chest radiography and computed tomography based on patchy ground-glass opacities in a peribronchial or peripheral distribution, suggesting the appearance of bronchiolitis

We report the case of a woman with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis type I who presented with acute respiratory failure secondary to alveolar haemorrhage. The persistence of the respiratory failure, once the alveolar haemorrhage had ceased, was apparently due to diffuse alveolar damage in organization. The recognition of this proliferative reaction through the performance of transbronchial biopsy allowed the initiation of a correct treatment with which a favourable response was obtained.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary complications of radiotherapy are rare, but bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is observed in 2.5% of cases. It can develop after radiation treatment of breast cancer as well as, more rarely, lung cancer, sarcoma, Hodgkin's disease or malignant thymoma.
CASE: Ten months after radiotherapy for breast cancer, a 52 year-old woman developed migratory alveolar opacities outside the radiation field. Their improvement with corticosteroid treatment led to the diagnosis of BOOP.
DISCUSSION: BOOP, which resembles infectious pneumonia, can develop 2-7 months af

Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is a nonspecific form of pulmonary injury related to different etiologic agents. The disorder is not only limited to the alveoli but also affects to the alveolar ducts and distal bronchioles. This fact may differentiate this disorder of others with chronic inflammatory diffuse alveolar lesion as chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP), extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) or diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). It has been described an idiopathic form and other associated with connective tissue diseases, infections, organ's transplantation, drug

We report a rare case of the independent coexistence of lung cancer and organizing pneumonia (OP) in different lobes of the right lung in a 67-year-old man with a history of left upper lobectomy. Computed tomography revealed a lesion consistent with OP in the right upper lobe and a suspicious shadow in the right lower lobe, which was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma via bronchoscopic biopsy. The patient underwent right lower lobectomy and partial resection of the right upper lobe under left one-lung ventilation. Empirical corticosteroids were administered preoperatively, followed by a brie

RATIONALE: Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is an uncommon type of acute lung injury associated with infection, connective tissue disorders, drug exposure, and hematologic malignancies.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old female presented with intermittent fever, chills, and dry cough since 10 days. Chest computed tomography scan showed multiple bilateral patchy infiltrates. PPD skin test was positive but tuberculosis antibody test and T-SPOT were negative.
DIAGNOSES: Histologic examination revealed massive fibrinous exudation with organization within alveolar spaces and scattered

BACKGROUND: Anti-synthetase syndrome associated interstitial lung disease can occur either simultaneously, before, or after the development of polymyositis/dermatomyositis. Histology of interstitial lung disease can be nonspecific interstitial pneumonia, usual interstitial pneumonia, diffuse alveolar damage, organizing pneumonia. Organizing pneumonia associated anti-synthetase syndrome is a rare finding especially as the first manifestation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 41 year old male patient who presented with organizing pneumonia and 2 years following the onset, developed polymyositis w

Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is an inflammatory lung disease characterized by granulation tissue in the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli. BOOP can be caused by a number of etiologies including infection, toxic inhalation, medications, radiation, and collagen vascular disease, or it can be idiopathic. We report here a case of BOOP following inhalational exposure to a jalapeño grease fire. Capsaicin and other jalapeño-derived compounds are known causes of epithelial damage and airway inflammation but to our knowledge have never been implicated in the de

Organising pneumonia (OP) is a distinct clinicopathological entity resulting from pulmonary reaction to noxious environmental or endogenous factors, but also idiopathic cases have been noted. Frequently, small foci of OP accompany lung cancer infiltrations. Also OP is sometimes a reaction to radio- or chemotherapy, but it is rarely a predominant lesion in the course of lung cancer. We present the case of 65-year-old patient who presented with fever, dry cough, exertional dyspnoea and pneumonic consolidation in the right lower lobe. Bronchoscopy revealed squamous carcinoma obstructing the right

A 59-year-old woman had a four-year history of rheumatoid arthritis. Despite treatment with prednisolone for interstitial pneumonia, her chest X-ray films revealed gradual progression of reticular shadows, mainly in the left lung, and during the third hospitalization she died of respiratory failure due to acute exacerbation of pneumonia. At autopsy, there was a remarkable difference in lung weight: left 250 g, right 510 g. Microscopically, the pulmonary lesion was mild fibrosing interstitial pneumonia, with remarkable luminal organization and macrophages in parts. The features of unilateral in

Organising pneumonia (OP) is a lung inflammation-repair pattern characterised by rapid and complete resolution. In rare instances, it may progress to respiratory failure with poor outcomes due to steroid unresponsiveness and limited treatment options. A man in his 70s presented with shortness of breath, without accompanying symptoms, signs or laboratory markers of infection. Broad-spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids were administered. An extensive infectious and immunological workup yielded negative results. Despite these interventions, the patient's oxygen requirements increased, necessi

Bronchiolitis is an inflammatory and potentially fibrosing condition affecting mainly the intralobular conducting and transitional small airways. Secondary bronchiolitis participates in disease process of the airways and/or the surrounding lobular structures in the setting of several already defined clinical entities, mostly of known etiology, and occurs commonly. Primary or idiopathic bronchiolitis dominates and characterizes distinct clinical entities, all of unknown etiology, and occurs rarely. Secondary bronchiolitis regards infections, hypersensitivity disorders, the whole spectrum of smo

Objective: To summarize the clinical features of 21 cases of acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) confirmed by pathology, thereby improving clinicians' understanding of this disease and avoiding misdiagnosis in clinical practice. Methods: Twenty-one patients diagnosed pathologically with AFOP from January 2016 to April 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical symptoms, laboratory examination results, imaging features, treatments and outcomes were analyzed comprehensively. Results: There were 10 males and 11 females, with an average age of (58±10) years. All the cases present
