Four methods (chromogenic, acidimetric, inhibition, and iodometric) for demonstration of the beta-lactamase production by 70 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, were evaluated in Cuba. The causative agent of an hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreak was assessed through the study of 18 conjunctival exudates using the indirect immunofluorescence technique and isolation in cell culture of human embryo fibroblasts. In addition, 395 paired serum samples were studied and Enterovirus 70 was found to be responsible for the outbreak.

Genetic structure of non-inbred Cubavet and CENIC mice colonies was investigated for three loci of hair colouring (A, B, D), for potential fertility and embryo mortality. Mice colonies are polymorphis in three hair colour determining loci. Alleles rates are: a -- 0.17--0.36; b -- 0.21--0.26; d -- 0.07--0.17. Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is usually caused by coxsackievirus A16 or enterovirus 71 (EV71). Between 2011 and 2013, HFMD cases were reported from different Cuban provinces. A total of 42 clinical specimens were obtained from 23 patients. Detection, identification and phylogenetic analysis of enterovirus-associated HFMD were carried out by virus isolation, specific enterovirus PCR and partial VP1 sequences. HEV was detected in 11 HFMD cases. Emerging genetic variants of coxsackievirus A6 and EV71 were identified as the causative agents of the Cuban HFMD cases.
