Modern liberalism, female circumcision, and the rationality of traditions.

Tolerance is at the heart of Western liberalism, permitting mutually exclusive ideas and practices to coexist peacefully with one another, without the proponents of the differing ideas and practices killing one another. Yet, nothing challenges tolerance like the practice of sunna, female circumcision, clitorectomy, or genital mutilation. In this essay, I critique the Western critics of the practices, not in order to defend these practices, but rather to show that Western liberalism itself does not offer transcultural and transtemporal principles, for these principles only cohere within the tra

Language and cultural influences in the description of pain.

Several lines of argument have been pursued in the attempt to study the meanings of pain descriptions in English. First, the component terms of pain descriptions were heuristically classified into primary, secondary, and tertiary groups. Attention was then given to historical features of the primary pain terms. These were handled as morphological structures possessed of a history which has included their entry into the lexicon and their progressive modifications. Besides constituting morphological structures, the primary pain terms are also semantic categories; the history of this 'meaning' di

Human Phenotypic Diversity: An Evolutionary Perspective.

As humans migrated across the world, they encountered new environments requiring them to adapt to new challenges that presented themselves. The distribution of human phenotypes observed today is the result of this continuous adaptation, via biological/physiological and cultural means, and also by the modification of cultural practices, which leads to biological changes. In this chapter, we examine a number of adaptive traits and the roles played by their genetic and environmental determinants. We have selected a few traits used for human identification purposes (externally visible characterist

Variation in cultural attitude, knowledge and individual motivational factors impact engagement and tool use in a field experiment in wild chimpanzees.

Cultural traditions shape how animals approach ecological problems. Over the last two decades, Ugandan chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) have engaged with the honey-trap experiment, an apparatus mimicking a beehive, while relying on their cultural knowledge. Here, we compared the behaviour of three Ugandan chimpanzee communities in the experiment, adding a previously untested community, the Mwera South chimpanzees of Bugoma Forest. First, we tested whether communities varied in their engagement with the experiment and investigated whether differences lay in individual or community-b

Community-Sourced Intervention Programs: Review of Submissions in Response to a Statewide Call for "Promising Practices".

This study was initiated to add to the nascent literature on locally-grown intervention programs in the youth mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice service sectors, many of which demonstrate practice-based or community-defined evidence, but may not have been subjected to empirical evaluation. Characteristics of applications submitted in response to three public calls for additions to an inventory of research-supported intervention programs were reviewed on evidence for effectiveness, the use of key quality assurance (QA) elements (e.g., clearly specified training or integrity moni

Therapist intrapersonal factors and rupture repair: Professional self-doubt, self-compassion, and repair strategies in a simulated cultural rupture task.

OBJECTIVE: Ruptures are consequential moments in psychotherapy requiring therapists to remain engaged and responsive. Cultural ruptures may be especially challenging for trainee therapists. This study examined whether professional self-doubt (PSD) and self-compassion (SC) were associated with trainee therapists' use of repair strategies in response to video-simulated cultural rupture vignettes. METHOD: Graduate-level trainees (N = 88) responded to cultural rupture video stimuli. Responses were coded using the Rupture Resolution Rating System (3RS) to assess different types of repair. Cultural practices and knee osteoarthritis in Central Asia: a case-control study on risk and protective factors.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease that leads to pain, stiffness, and disability. While established risk factors such as age, obesity, and joint injury are well-documented, the role of cultural practices remains underexplored. This study investigates the association between traditional cultural practices and KOA prevalence in Central Asia. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted between January and March 2025 in Turkestan, Kazakhstan, involving 337 KOA cases and 685 matched controls. Participants completed structured questionnaires assessing demographi

Living arrangements of widows in the United States and Israel, 1960 and 1961.

One of the neglected areas in the study of the social structure of the family is that of widowhood, the last stage in the family life cycle. A study of living arrangements of the widowed provides an opportunity to examine the kinship solidarity of a society and to point up in bold relief the influence of a variety of factors that contribute to the residential patterns of the widowed. The data in this study were drawn from the 1960 Census of the United States and the 1961 Census of Israel, the latest which offer comparable data. Five ethnic-religious groups are examined in Israel and eight in t

Cultural Framing and the Impact On Acute Pain and Pain Services.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optimal treatment requires a thorough understanding of all factors contributing to pain in the individual patient. In this review, we investigate the influence of cultural frameworks on pain experience and management. RECENT FINDINGS: The loosely defined concept of culture in pain management integrates a predisposing set of diverse biological, psychological and social characteristics shared within a group. Cultural and ethnic background strongly influence the perception, manifestation, and management of pain. In addition, cultural, racial and ethnic differences continue to

Providing mental health services to Arab Americans: recommendations and considerations.

Arab Americans are an extremely heterogeneous and frequently misunderstood group whose unique characteristics and cultural heritage have received little attention in the mental health literature. To effectively address the needs of Arab Americans, mental health professionals need to be aware of their own biases and misperceptions regarding Arab Americans, have an accurate understanding of Arab cultural and sociopolitical backgrounds, and be able to identify culturally appropriate interventions for use with Arab American clients. This article reviews common stereotyped beliefs many Americans ha

[The Moral Deliberation: The Clinical Ethics Method. Presentation of a Paediatric Case].

Decision-making is one of the most difficult tasks of medical judgment, especially when cases involve paediatric patients with different cultural characteristics. It is the obligation of clinical ethics, taking the interdisciplinary approach as a tool to comprehensively analyse the clinical, social, cultural and legal aspects, among other topics, when choosing the treatment options that will be more beneficial for the patient. A clinical case, should enable this process of analysis and teamwork to be understood in practical way in order to address difficult medical problems.

Practical methods to embed culture in dental education.

Background Culture is dynamic and multifaceted, influencing patients' beliefs, behaviours, and experiences of healthcare. In dentistry, a comprehensive understanding of culture, including social determinants, protected characteristics, and lived experience, is essential to avoid stereotyping and promote equitable care. The General Dental Council's Safe practitioner framework (SPF) integrates cultural competence across multiple domains of dental education.Aim To explore how cultural competence (or humility) can be embedded into the UK dental curriculum in alignment with the SPF, and to offer pr

Do Caucasian American and South Asian Indian cultural groups differ in sensitivity to capsaicin? A study designed to control for chili pepper affinity.

Although different cultural groups are known to vary in their tolerance for hot chili peppers, the influence of factors such as cultural background and upbringing on sensitivity to compounds in spicy food is unclear. A study was designed to investigate sensitivity differences to capsaicin between Caucasian American and South Asian Indian cultural groups while controlling for general chili pepper affinity. The two cultural groups were selected to match on metrics related to chili pepper use and liking. Subjects were exposed to a capsaicin (100 ppm) stimulus on the tongue, cheek, hard palate, an
