Plant defences against pathogens and herbivorous insects form a comprehensive network of interacting signal transduction pathways. The signalling molecules salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) play important roles in this network. SA is involved in signalling processes providing systemic acquired resistance (SAR), protecting the plant from further infection after an initial pathogen attack. SAR is long-lasting and provides broad spectrum resistance to biotrophic pathogens that feed on a living host cell. The regulatory protein NPR1 is a central positive regulator of SAR. SA-activated NPR

This paper reports on the identification and characterization of a new ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter which was identified as a salicylic acid-induced gene from soybean (Glycine max cv. Williams 82) in a subtractive suppression hybridization approach. A fragment of an ABC-transporter gene was used to isolate a full-length cDNA clone for this gene with a length of 4750 bp. The encoded protein has a length of 1447 amino acids and is composed of two similar repeat units typical of full-size ABC transporters. The sequence displays a close relationship to plant pleiotropic drug resistance (

Cytosolic Ca(2+) and jasmonate mediate signals that induce defense responses in plants. In this study, the interaction between Ca(2+) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) in modulating defense responses was investigated by monitoring ajmalicine production in Catharanthus roseus suspension cultures. C. roseus suspensions were treated with nine combinations of CaCl(2) (3, 23, and 43 mM) and MJ (0, 10, and 100 microM) on day 6 of growth. Increased Ca(2+) influx through the addition of extracellular CaCl(2) suppressed ajmalicine production in MJ-induced cultures. The highest ajmalicine production (4.75 mg/l)

Recent work has shown that the Arabidopsis NPR1 protein not only plays an essential role in salicylic acid (SA)-mediated systemic acquired resistance and rhizobacterium-triggered induced systemic resistance, but also is involved in crosstalk inhibition of jasmonic acid (JA)-mediated defense responses. Molecular characterization has revealed that activation of NPR1 and certain TGA transcription factors occurs under the reducing conditions that follow an initial oxidative burst after the induction of defense responses. In addition to NPR1 and TGA, the single-stranded DNA-binding transcription fa

The possible role of cyclopentenone-containing sesquiterpene lactones in the cause of photochemical chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is examined in light of recent reports that the alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone group of these natural products forms 2+2 photoadducts with the DNA base thymine. Neither cyclopentenone nor tenulin (a cyclopentenone-containing sesquiterpene lactone) form such photoadducts with thymine either with sunlight or a UV lamp (300 nm). In contrast, alpha-methylenebutyrolactone readily forms the 2+2 photoadduct with thymine in sunlight. Thus, the photochemical role of the al

There is general agreement that moderate affinity uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonists combine good efficacy and tolerability in animal models of disturbances in glutamatergic transmission. There are several theories on which properties are important for this profile including 1, rapid access to the channel at the start of pathological overactivity 2, rapid, voltage-dependent relief of blockade during physiological synaptic activation and 3, partial untrapping. Merz has developed a series of novel uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonists based on the cyclohexane structure. In cultured hippoc

The antitussives dextromethorphan (DM), carbetapentane (CBP), and caramiphen (CM) are known to have anti-convulsant properties. They were given individually to guinea pigs prior to poisoning with 2 x LD50 soman to test their efficacy against organophosphorus-induced convulsions, brain damage, and lethality. All subjects received an injection of pyridostigmine coincident with the antitussive, and were treated with atropine methylnitrate and pralidoxime chloride 30 sec after soman administration. CM, in a dose-dependent manner, protected against lethality and either prevented or reduced the inte

Glucosinolates in two genotypes of kale sprouts treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) were analyzed using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS). This approach enabled the identification of 13 distinct glucosinolates (GSLs) and the quantitative determination of their individual contents. Our results show that MeJA induced GSL biosynthesis, resulting in a significant increase in the total content of aliphatic, indolic, and aromatic GSLs, while also altering their compositional profiles. Notably, the contents of sinigri

Vector-borne plant viruses depend on insect vectors for transmission and often suppress host defenses that limit vector survival and spread. However, their impact on volatile-mediated indirect defenses remains unclear. Here, we show that rice viruses inhibit methyl salicylate (MeSA) emission, impairing parasitoid recruitment and promoting vector persistence. Field experiments demonstrate that MeSA, a key herbivore-induced volatile, suppresses vector populations by attracting egg parasitoids. Viruses counter this by targeting basic-helix-loop-helix transcription factor OsMYC2, a jasmonic acid s

BACKGROUND: Aphids are significant agricultural pests, causing extensive crop damage and transmitting plant viruses. Conventional insecticide-based pest control faces challenges such as human and environmental toxicity and resistance. As alternative solutions, pheromone-based repellents have emerged as a promising approach. However, the instability of key compounds like (E)-β-Farnesene (EBF) has limited their effectiveness in field applications. To address these limitations, this study focuses on developing novel aphid repellent compounds based on plant volatiles and nepetalactone key fragment

Plants frequently confront pathogens that disrupt physiological and molecular functions, ultimately reducing agricultural yields. To counter these challenges, plants activate sophisticated defense mechanisms to recognize stress signals while optimizing growth. Phytohormones signaling pathways and their crosstalk are central to regulating plant growth, development and defense. Numerous proteins associated with phytohormone signaling pathways have been identified, including receptors for several vital hormones. Previous studies indicate that defense phytohormones, like salicylic acid (SA), jasmo

Arsenic (As) is a highly cytotoxic element impairing normal cellular functions, and its bioremediation has become one of the environmental concerns. This study explored the molecular and physiological responses of thyme (Thymus kotschyanus) seedlings to incorporating As (0 and 10 mgl-1) and methyl jasmonate (MJ; 0 and 10 µM) into the culture medium. The MJ treatment reinforced root system and mitigated the As cytotoxicity risk. MJ contributed to hypomethylation, a potential adaptation mechanism for conferring the As tolerance. Plant root architecture plasticity in response to biotic stresses has not been thoroughly investigated. Infection by endoparasitic cyst nematodes induces root architectural changes that involve the formation of secondary roots at infection sites. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating secondary root formation in response to cyst nematode infection remain largely unknown. We first assessed whether secondary roots form in a nematode density-dependent manner by challenging wild-type Arabidopsis plants with increasing numbers of cyst nematodes (Heterodera schachtii). Next, using jasmonate-re

Tobacco black shank is a kind of soil-borne disease caused by the Oomycete Phytophthora parasitica. This disease is one of the most destructive diseases to tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) growth worldwide. At present, various measures have been taken to control this disease, but they still have different challenges and limitations. Studies have shown that β-aminobutyric acid (BABA), a nonprotein amino acid, can enhance disease resistance in plants against different varieties of pathogens. However, it is unclear whether BABA can induce plants to resist Phytophthora parasitica infection. Therefor

BACKGROUND: Some subtypes of influenza virus, such as H5N1 and H7N9, cause severe viral pneumonia, for which the intraluminal concentration of the anti-influenza agent in the airway is critical. However, the pharmacokinetics of peramivir, the only available injectable neuraminidase inhibitor formulation, in the airway epithelial lining fluid (ELF) remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine the time course of peramivir in the pharyngeal ELF, bronchial ELF and plasma of healthy volunteers using bronchoscopic microsampling technique.
METHODS: Six healthy volunteers were studied. After

A study of the scope and limitations of varying the ligand framework around the dinuclear core of FvRu2 in its function as a molecular solar thermal energy storage framework is presented. It includes DFT calculations probing the effect of substituents, other metals, and CO exchange for other ligands on ΔHstorage . Experimentally, the system is shown to be robust in as much as it tolerates a number of variations, except for the identity of the metal and certain substitution patterns. Failures include 1,1',3,3'-tetra-tert-butyl (4), 1,2,2',3'-tetraphenyl (9), diiron (28), diosmium (24), mixed ir

In geophyte plants, such as Zantedeschia, individual leaves are directly connected to a specialized underground storage organ (rhizome/tuber), raising a question regarding systemic resistance as a mechanism of defense. A systemic response requires a transfer of a signal through the storage organ which has been evolutionary adapted to store food, minerals and moisture for seasonal growth and development. We have characterized the nature of induced defense responses in Zantedeschia aethiopica, a rhizomatous (tuber-like) ornamental plant by the application of local elicitation using two well-know

Codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), is a cosmopolitan pest of apple, potentially causing severe damage to the fruit. Currently used methods of combating this insect do not warrant full success or are harmful to the environment. The use of plant-derived semiochemicals for manipulation with fruit-infesting behavior is one of the new avenues for controlling this pest. Here, we explore the potential of Ginkgo biloba and its synthetic metabolites for preventing apple feeding and infestation by neonate larvae of C. pomonella. Experiments with crude extracts indicated that deterrent constituents of g

Upward leaf movement (hyponastic growth) is adopted by several plant species including Arabidopsis thaliana, as a mechanism to escape adverse growth conditions. Among the signals that trigger hyponastic growth are, the gaseous hormone ethylene, low light intensities, and supra-optimal temperatures (heat). Recent studies indicated that the defence-related phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) synthesized by the plant upon biotic infestation repress low light-induced hyponastic growth. The hyponastic growth response induced by high temperature (heat) treatment and upon applica
