It is estimated that nontyphoidal Salmonella causes approximately 1 million illnesses and 378 deaths per year in the United States. Reduction of Salmonella-related foodborne infections can be achieved through application of food antimicrobials. Essential oils in combination with other antimicrobials can be added to food products to reduce the levels of the organism below the infectious dose for healthy individuals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of white mustard essential oil (WMEO) against serovars of Salmonella and its potential to be used with carvac

Amoebic keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis are caused by some strains of free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba. In the case of keratitis, one of the greatest problems is the disease recurrence due to the resistance of parasites, especially the cystic forms, to the drugs that are currently used. Some essential oils of plants have been used as potential active agents against this protist. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the amebicidal activity of essential oils from plants of the genus Lippia against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites. To that end, 8 × 10(4) t

Chiral η6-benzene-ligand-controlled asymmetric catalysis represents an emerging paradigm in stereoselective synthesis, particularly for ruthenium-catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation. The catalytic efficiency of these systems is profoundly influenced by the substitution pattern of the η6-benzene ligand. While existing designs are restricted to 1,2,4-trisubstituted and 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted frameworks, the 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstitution pattern remains uncharted territory. In this work, we disclose a novel class of chiral η6-benzene ligands featuring this unexplored 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstitution patte

A millisecond pulsed glow discharge is used as a versatile ion source for time-gated generation of elemental, structural, and molecular ions. The utility of this ion source for comprehensive chemical analysis of a series of aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons is illustrated in this manuscript. To highlight the analytical utility of this transient ion source, it was connected to a gas chromatograph for the mass spectrometric determination of mixtures containing benzene, toluene, o-xylene, cymene, tert-butylbenzene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, chlorobenzene, tetrachlorethane, and dichlor

Here we present a split-enzyme sensor approach for the sequence-specific detection of metal-based drug adducts of DNA. Split β-lactamase reporters were constructed using domain A of the High Mobility Group Box 1 protein (HMGB1a) in conjunction with zinc finger DNA-binding domains. As a proof of concept, the sensors were characterized with the well-known drug cisplatin, which forms 1,2-intrastrand crosslinks with DNA that are recognized by HMGB1a. After promising results with cisplatin, five ruthenium-based drugs were studied, four of which produced significant signal over background. These res

Plant pathogenic fungi pose a threat to agricultural production, necessitating the search for safer fungicidal alternatives to conventional synthetic fungicides. Phenolic monoterpenes (PMs) and their derivatives have shown promise in fungicide development due to their potent biological activity. In this study, a ″group introduction″ strategy was employed to synthesize novel antifungal derivatives of PMs, incorporating nonclassical bioisosteres such as methylamino and acetylamino groups into carvacrol and thymol. The antifungal efficacy of these derivatives was evaluated against six plant patho
