A Case of Duffy-Null-Associated Neutropenia in a Patient With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

Duffy-null-associated neutrophil count (DANC) refers to a below-normal absolute neutrophil count (ANC < 1.5 × 103/L), present most commonly in African American individuals. Neutropenia is a result of a lack of Fya and Fyb antigens on red blood cells. These patients do not have an increased risk of infection and may have an ANC < 1.5 × 103/L at baseline. This unique case presents Duffy-null-associated neutropenia in the setting of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). A 64-year-old African American female presented to the emergency department on May 17, 2021, for fatigue and was found to have a white

Uncommon yet critical: Pulmonary embolism in a 14-year-old Nigerian child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pulmonary embolism is a rare life-threatening condition in pediatric populations. Diagnosis is often challenging in resource-constrained settings suffering chronic shortages of specialist and diagnostic services. We report the prompt recognition and challenging management of pulmonary embolism in an adolescent presenting to a private specialist hospital in a resource-constrained country. Although, majority of the Nigerian population utilize private healthcare, most centers are not equipped with sophisticated radiological and advanced laboratory services. These services were outsourc

Can google glass™ technology improve freezing of gait in parkinsonism? A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling phenomenon defined by the periodic absence or reduction of forward progression of the feet despite the intention to walk. We sought to understand whether Google Glass (GG), a lightweight wearable device that provides simultaneous visual-auditory cues, might improve FOG in parkinsonism. METHODS: Patients with parkinsonism and FOG utilized GG custom-made auditory-visual cue applications: "Walk With Me" and "Unfreeze Me" in a single session intervention. We recorded ambulation time with and without GG under multiple conditions including 25 feet stra

Effect of a Multimodal Movement Intervention in Patients With Neurogenic Claudication Based on Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and/or Degenerative Spondylolisthesis-A Pilot Study.

Chronic low-back pain is a major individual, social, and economic burden. The impairment ranges from deterioration of gait, limited mobility, to psychosocial distress. Due to this complexity, the demand for multimodal treatments is huge. Our purpose is to compare the effects of a multimodal movement intervention (MI) (coordinative-cognitive exercises and dancing program) with standard physical therapy (PT) on gait, physical function, and quality of life in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). The study design is based on a 6-week intervention with a two (group: MI/PT) by two (measuremen

ACKR1/Duffy-null genotype testing for clozapine: A guideline developed by the UK Centre of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation in Pharmacogenomics (CERSI-PGx).

Clozapine is licenced for treatment-resistant schizophrenia and psychosis in Parkinson's disease. In the United Kingdom, there is a mandatory requirement for absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and white blood cell count (WBC) monitoring to safeguard against agranulocytosis. Some people have naturally low ANCs without increased infection risk, caused by a homozygous T > C variant in ACKR1, commonly called the Duffy-null genotype. This condition is known as ADAN (ACKR1/DARC-associated neutropenia) and synonyms include DANC (Duffy-null associated neutrophil count) and BEN (benign ethnic neutropenia)

Monocentric retrospective clinical outcome in a group of 13 patients with opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome, proposal of diagnostic algorithm and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Dancing eye syndrome or opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a very rare disease (incidence <1/5,000,000 per year), which is more prevalent in young children. Although it is not usually a cause of mortality, the aftermaths are not rare. METHODS: We performed an observational retrospective review of children diagnosed with OMS in our neuropediatric department from 1996 to 2020, with the objective of assessing the prognostic value of initial clinical features. All medical data from diagnosis to last follow-up were reviewed. We defined unfavorable evolution of OMS as persistence or

Outcomes of hip resurfacing in a professional dancer: a case report.

A new surgical option (hip resurfacing arthroplasty) is now available for younger patients with hip osteoarthritis. A more aggressive rehabilitation program than the typical total hip arthroplasty protocol is needed for active individuals. This case report describes interventions used to maximize function in a 46-year-old professional dancer after hip resurfacing with a progressive therapeutic exercise program. Exercise choices were selected to address dance-specific requirements while respecting healing of the posterior capsular incision. Strengthening focused on hip abduction, extension, and

Use of virtual reality technique for the training of motor control in the elderly. Some theoretical considerations.

Virtual augmented exercise, an emerging technology that can help to promote physical activity and combine the strengths of indoor and outdoor exercise, has recently been proposed as having the potential to increase exercise behavior in older adults. By creating a strong presence in a virtual, interactive environment, distraction can be taken to greater levels while maintaining the benefits of indoor exercises which may result in a shift from negative to positive thoughts about exercise. Recent findings on young participants show that virtual reality training enhances mood, thus, increasing enj

Career hazards for the dancer.

Most dance injuries are of the overuse variety. Their gradual onset, coupled with the intense competition for professional positions, often results in injuries being ignored and thus seen late in their course. While treatment of the specific injury is of paramount concern, maintenance of the extremes of flexibility, strength, and conditioning necessary to dance professionally is an equally important treatment element.

Dance PREEMIE, a Dance PaRticipation intervention for Extremely prEterm children with Motor Impairment at prEschool age: an Australian feasibility trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Children born extremely preterm (EP: <28 weeks gestation) and/or extremely low birth weight (ELBW: <1000 g) are at increased risk of motor impairment compared with children born at term. Children with motor impairment have lower rates of physical activity (PA) participation compared with their typically developing peers. PA participation is an important outcome for children with motor impairment, however, there is limited evidence available to support interventions that improve PA participation in this population. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility, including the

Complementing humanitarian staff care with arts-based initiatives? Viewpoints from in-house mental health professionals.

Over the past decade, research on the mental health of humanitarian staff has gained momentum, prompting organizations to increasingly support and invest in workers' mental health and well-being. However, many of the existing initiatives-such as one-on-one talk therapy-are grounded in Euro-American traditions. These approaches may not align with the cultural frameworks or preferences of all staff, potentially leaving significant segments of the workforce underserved. Furthermore, challenges related to team cohesion are difficult to address within current staff care structures. Against this bac

Dance-based avenues to advance nonpharmacologic treatment of chemotherapy effects (DAANCE): study protocol for a multi-center, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is among the most common forms of cancer, particularly among women. Chemotherapies that are most effective in treating BC are known to cause chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIN), thus leaving survivors with sensory deficits including pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities; functional deficits such as impaired neuromotor control and motor-cognitive integration; reduced quality of life; and increased fall risk. Current pharmacologic treatments show limited efficacy and create additional unwanted side effects. In the absence of pharmacologic options, physi

The entactogen 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; ecstasy) as a treatment aid in psychotherapy and its safety concerns.

The phenylethylamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy'), is the prototypical example of an entactogen. Its original placement in highly restrictive drug usage categories in the US and UK, led to an inevitable restriction on MDMA neuroscience research and treatment. The dominant pharmacological effects of MDMA are its properties of release and inhibition of reuptake of amine neurotransmitter transporters for dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. MDMA is an agonist of a wide range of receptors; its mood-altering effects are mediated via 5-HT2A receptors; this receptor may al
