The CREST syndrome initially described as a limited, more indolent form of diffuse scleroderma, is characterized by calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasias. BACKGROUND: The role of vitamin A in early primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) remains uncertain.

Perimetric examination of the central visual field with low contrast static dark-on-bright stimuli on a video display unit (VDU) is described. Threshold detection sensitivities to such dark stimuli are determined in normal as well as pathological central visual fields of glaucomatous, diabetic and neuro-ophthalmic patients. Albino mice and rats have elevated dark-adapted thresholds compared to normally pigmented animals. The absolute dark-adapted incremental threshold for black mice is about 1.5 log units lower than the threshold for albino mice when measured by single-unit recordings from the superior colliculus. Cell counts from the outer nuclear layer in albino mice are not significantly different from those in black mice, indicating that the elevated dark-adapted thresholds are not due to light damage of photoreceptor cells. The histopathology of the enlarged carotid bodies, in both qualitative and quantitative terms, is described in two cases. One was in a woman of 80 years with systemic hypertension and the other in a man of 72 years with pan-acinar emphysema complicated by chronic hypoxaemia. In both instances there was generalized hyperplasia of sustentacular cells, perhaps with involvement of Schwann cells and fibrocytes, with superimposed focal proliferation of dark or 'pyknotic' variants of chief cells. The functional significance of both froms of tissue response in the carotid bodies is speculated upon.

20 patients with tumors of the head and neck region have a delayed dark adaption. The serum vitamin A levels in these patients are significantly diminished versus controls. Since disturbance of dark adaption does not occur before long during deficiency of vitamin A, it is assumed that the deficiency was existent long time before. With regard to the possible antineoplastic potency of vitamin A, this is considered a possibly important factor in tumor development and growth. The disturbed vitamin A metabolism is possibly due to a long lasting imbalanced diet.

Quantum mixtures of moiré excitons have arisen as a platform for realizing novel phases of light and matter.
