In 1983 Sommer described a new syndrome in a mother and her infant daughter which was subsequently called the syndrome of craniofacial, hand anomalies and sensorineural deafness. The syndrome consisted of a normal calvarium with a flat facial profile, hypertelorism and small palpebral fissures with an antimongoloid slant, a depressed nasal bridge with a button tip and slitlike nares and a small "pursed" mouth. Profound sensorineural hearing loss and ulnar deviation of the hands with flexion contractures of digits three, four and five was evident. The family had another child, a son, two years …

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Otolaryngological manifestations are common in Lyme disease, affecting up to 75% of patients. One of these symptoms is sudden deafness. Hearing loss has been frequently described in Lyme disease; on the other hand, titers seropositive for, the causal agent of this disease, have been found in almost 20% of cases of sudden deafness. No consensual information exists on the outcome of Borrelia-seropositive patients or on the importance of determining Borrelia antibody titers. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of seropositivity for Borrelia in sudden deafnes…

The incidence of auditory disturbances in vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) is considered much rarer than vestibular disturbances, but no routine audiometric test results for VBI patients have been published. To determine the incidence of deafness associated with VBI and the sites predominantly involved in deafness, we studied 70 vertiginous patients with VBI using a routine audiological examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI detected a lacunar infarct involving the cochlear nuclei in one patient, but lacunae did not involve central auditory structures in the other patients. T…

Unilateral deafness constitute medical (aetiological diagnosis, treatment, hearing aid fitting) and social problems (no certification of disability). Following audiological examinations were performed in the study: pure tone audiometry (PTA), impedance audiometry, auditory brainstem responses (ABR), otoacoustic emissions (OAE), as well as balance, taste, examinations and electric sensitivity of the acoustic nerve. In cases of tinnitus the parameters of its character were done. All of our patients underwent X-ray investigations, i.e. ear X-ray by Schüller and Stenvers methods, computerized tomo…

From January 1993 to December 1994 twelve patients were evaluated for sudden hearing loss. The median age was 49 years with a range of 18 to 71. All had severe or profound initial hearing loss. The incidence of bilateral disease was 25%. Total deafness occurred in five (33%) ears. Nine (75%) patients had vestibular symptoms and eight (67%) admitted experiencing tinnitus. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed mitral prolapse in eight (67%) patients; another patient showed moderate to severe ischemic left ventricular dysfunction with apical aneurysm.

Twelve per cent of a series of 284 patients with vestibular schwannoma presented with sudden deafness. If sudden sensorineural hearing loss is present then it is very likely to be the main presenting symptom. The mean length of patients' history is eight months shorter in this group than in the non-sudden deafness group. Sixteen per cent of vestibular schwannoma patients without sudden deafness present with a 'dead' ear whereas 29.5 per cent of those presenting with sudden deafness have total hearing loss. There was no significant difference between the sudden deafness group and the 'all other…

We investigated the clinical features of 64 cases of sudden deafness in patients more than 60 years of age. Forty-eight cases (75%) had profound deafness, 13 moderate and three mild deafness. The audiograms of 25 cases showed a flat pattern, 13 a gradually descending curve, and 13 total deafness. In 60 cases, the unaffected ear also had hearing impairment of variable severity. Fifty-one of these 60 cases demonstrated a physiological hearing threshold shift termed presbycusis in the unaffected ear. Hearing impairment in 35 cases (55%) was cured or improved by medical treatment including steroid…

BACKGROUND: Robinow mesomelic dysplasia is an autosomal dominant or recessive condition that results is a flat facial profile, mesomelic shortening and frequent genital hypoplasia. This report describes a case with bilateral deafness.
CASE REPORT: A boy was born at term to consanguineous parents who have no morphological abnormalities. The child's older brother and sister are normal. The patient was admitted at the age of 5 months because of abnormal features: enlarged skull with prominent forehead, flat facial profile, hypertelorism, small chin, shortening in the mesomelic segments of the li…

Sudden deafness is defined as acute inner ear hearing loss, in the rule one-sided, of unknown etiology. The tentative diagnosis can be made easily by otoscopy and simple audiological forke tests. To exclude symptomatic acute hearing losses during the first treatment period, f.e. acoustic neurinoma, rupture of the round window membrane, multiple sclerosis, infectious diseases like Borreliosis or Lues, but also psychogenic hearing disorders we recommend an immediate hospitalization. Neurological and internal check up should look for inflammatory or degenerative diseases of the vascular or nervou…

This study was conducted at the Government Deaf and Dumb School, Thanjavur to ascertain the possible etiological factors. The social outlook of the parents of these children was analysed. Boys were more often affected (60.2%). Consanguinity was observed in 65.4% parents; 23.1% had one or more affected sibling and 14.1% had affected relatives. Parents detected the hearing disability in their children between 3-6 months of age in about 79% cases. Syphilis and chickenpox were the common antenatal associated infections. Streptomycin, chloroquine and abortificients were used during early pregnancy.

Behçet's disease is a multisystemic vasculitis of unknown aetiology. Generally, it is characterized by recurrent aphthous stomatitis, recurrent genital ulcers, uveitis with hypopion. Recently some authors reported that patients with Behçet's disease show frequently audio-vestibular involvement. We observed a 40 year-old man (case A) and a 66 year-old woman (case B) affected by Behçet's disease for more than 10 years, showing a sudden deafness occurring during an exacerbation of the disease. In both cases there was a sensorineural hearing-loss, unilateral or bilateral. One patient received earl…

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis is generally a benign disease passing off without complication. The authors describe a case where the disease appeared in the form of febrile infection and caused permanent unilateral deafness. In connection with this case the authors review briefly the clinical aspects, diagnostic difficulties of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection and wish to draw the attention to the possibility of a lymphocytic choriomeningitis infection in the background of parainfluenza diseases occurring mainly in cold months.

Heredity, viral infection, and head or acoustic trauma are considered the common etiologies for a unilateral sensorineural deafness in children. The incidence of perilymphatic fistula in a unilateral hearing loss is still unknown. Inner ear-related symptoms in children are scarce, and little diagnostic laboratory testing is available. A definite diagnosis of a perilymphatic fistula can therefore be made only by an exploratory tympanotomy. Four children, ages 5 to 15 years, with a history of a recent and rapidly progressive unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, were explored. Preoperative labo…
