The present work is the first extensive study of large-scale pesticides research in wild animals. The investigation covered three game species: wild boar (n = 42), roe deer (n = 79) and deer (n = 15) collected from north-eastern Poland. To characterize the 480 pesticides in muscle samples, LC-GC-MS/MS techniques were used. A total of 28 compounds were detected: 5 neonicotinoids, 6 organochlorine and 5 other insecticides, 9 fungicides and 4 herbicides, in the range of 0.1-85.3 ng g-1. Over four hundred detections were done. The highest mean concentrations were as follows: anthraquinone (85.3 ng…

A study was undertaken on weaned 4-5 month old farmed red deer to test the efficacy of moxidectin and abamectin anthelmintics, given by three different routes of administration, compared with an untreated control. Faecal samples were collected on days 0, 7 and 14 for a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), blood samples were collected on days 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 for pharmacokinetics, and the deer were killed on days 14 or 15 for total nematode count. The control group averaged 1264 adult Ostertagia-type nematode parasite species and treatment efficacy was 77.4% for moxidectin i…

Sperm cryopreservation imposes osmotic stress due to the addition and removal of high-concentration cryoprotectants. Whether organic osmolytes can alleviate this stress to improve cryopreservation efficiency remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the effects of glycine and betaine, supplemented as organic osmolytes throughout the cryopreservation process, on the quality and developmental potential of cryopreserved sika deer sperm. Pooled semen samples from five healthy adult stags were randomly allocated to four groups: a control (base extender) and three treatment groups supplemented with glycin…

Polydactyly is a rare anomaly that has been described in many vertebrate species including several deer species. The case described in this communication is believed to be only the second documented example of additional metatarsae in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). In addition to normally developed digits III and IV and the dewclaws, a right hind foot of an adult female from Germany had two additional digits lateral to digit V. Both originated from additional metatarsal elements. This case offers significant insights into the developmental plasticity of the cervid limb and extends the morphol…

Hypertrophic osteopathy (HO) is a condition in which periosteal bone forms along long bone diaphyses and metaphyses. Lesions generally affec … lung. We report HO, with findings consistent to other veterinary species, in a farmed white-tailed deer (WTD) with bacterial pneumonia and in 3 free-ranging WTD, one of which had fungal pneumonia. Recognition of HO in WTD and potentially associated conditions can lead to improved sample collection in the field. Such information can improve characteriz …

Bone and dental lesions have been documented in various deer species globally, affecting the efficiency of ingestion and digestion, consequently influencing their general health and leading to a decline in survival and reproductive performance. The present study aimed to characterize bone and dental lesions in the dry skulls of individual deer, estimate the prevalence of these lesions, and assess potential risk factors associated with the development of bone and dental alterations. This study assessed bone and dental lesions in 180 dry skulls of eleven neotropical deer species, originating fro…

BACKGROUND: This case describes a Reeves' muntjac deer (Muntiacus reevesi) with a suspected undescended testicle or cryptorchidism. The cryptorchid testicle could not be palpated or visualized with sonography. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging was performed to avoid an exploratory surgical operation, but no cryptorchid testicle was discovered. The final diagnosis was a singular testicular anorchia.
DISCUSSION: Cryptorchidism and hypogonadism affect a relatively small population of male infants but are the most common male genitourinary anomalies. Identifying the location of t…

The genomic landscape of transposable elements (TEs) varies dramatically across species, with some TEs demonstrating greater success in colonizing particular lineages than others. In mammals, long interspersed nuclear element (LINE) retrotransposons are typically more common than any other TE. Here, we report an unusual genomic landscape of TEs in the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus. In contrast to other previously examined mammals, long terminal repeat elements occupy more of the deer mouse genome than LINEs (11% and 10%, respectively). This pattern reflects a combination of relatively low…

Embryonic diapause in mammals describes a transient reduction of proliferation and developmental progression occurring at the blastocyst stage. It was first described in the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in the 19th century, and later found to occur in at least over 130 mammalian species across several taxa. Diapause is often displayed as an interruption, a halt, or an arrest of embryonic development. In this review, we explore reduced, but not stopped pace of growth, proliferation and developmental progression during embryonic diapause and revisit early embryonic proliferation and c…

A 6-year-old castrated male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was referred to the Animal Medical Center, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, for examination and treatment of recurrent pneumothorax. Chest radiography and computed tomography showed multiple cavitary lesions in the caudal right posterior lobe. These lesions were surgically excised via thoracotomy. Subsequent histopathological examination revealed paragonimiasis. In the postoperative review, we found that the owner had fed raw deer meat to the dog four months earlier. Deer meat has attracted attention as a source of Parago…

Peromyscus maniculatus, including the laboratory stock BW, have been used as a model organism for autism spectrum disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder because of the high occurrence of stereotypy. Several studies have identified neurological and environmental components of the phenotype; however, the heritability of the phenotype has not been examined. This study characterizes the incidence and heritability of vertical jumping stereotypy (VS) and backflipping (BF) behavior in the BW stock of the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center, which are indicative of autism spectrum disorders. Trees and shrubs in suburban forests can be subject to chronic herbivory from abundant white-tailed deer, influencing survival, growth, secondary metabolites, and ecological success in the community. We investigated how deer affect the size, cover, and metabolomes of four species in the understory of a suburban forest in central New Jersey, USA: the woody shrubs Euonymus alatus and Lindera benzoin, the tree Nyssa sylvatica, and the semi-woody shrub Rosa multiflora. For each species, we compared plants in 38 16 m2 plots with or without deer exclosure, measuring proportion cover and mean height …

BACKGROUND: Deer antler is considered as a precious traditional Chinese medicinal material and has been widely used to reinforce kidney's yang, nourish essence, and strengthen bone function. The most prominent bioactive components in deer antler are water-soluble proteins that play potential roles in bone formation and repair. The aim of this study was to explore the molecular control and therapeutic targets of deer antler extract (DAE) on articular cartilage.
METHODS: DAE was prepared as previously described. All rats were randomly divided into Blank group and DAE group (10 rats per group) a…

Cephenemyia stimulator is a Palearctic species developing in the nasal cavity and pharynx of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). It is widely spread in the range of distribution of this ungulate in Europe. Since the first report of C. stimulator in Spain in 2001, a rapid geographic expansion has been observed, first in the north of the country, with high prevalence and intensities of infestation that caused some mortal cases, and, lately, also in Extremadura and Andalucía, the southernmost populations of European roe deer. These observations suggest an adaptation of this parasite to different ecos…

Consumption of game in Germany has increased during the past 10 years. Wild boar (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the most frequently hunted and consumed game animals in Germany, yet information on the occurrence of zoonotic pathogens in these animal species is scarce. To better estimate the public health risk emanating from handling and consumption of game, this study investigated seroprevalences of Toxoplasma gondii in game hunted in the German federal state of Brandenburg during two hunting seasons from 2017 to 2019. Toxoplasma gondii-specific a…

Over the past three decades, citizens of Maine in the northeastern United States have experienced increasing blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) abundance and rising incidence of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) overabundance has been considered one cause of the high incidence of tick-borne diseases on offshore islands of New England. Most of Maine's 15 offshore, unbridged island communities have a history of concern about ticks, Lyme disease, and white-tailed deer overabundance, but have been challenged to keep deer numbers down through hunting o…

Developing baseline concentrations of serotonin in healthy white-tailed deer will allow for the development of a biomarker using non-invasive sample tissues in sick animals, for example, non-clinical cases of chronic wasting disease. It will also allow some further insight into whether the use of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGP), such as chlortetracycline, is affecting serotonin concentrations in white-tailed deer. Florfenicol and tulathromycin impacts on serotonin concentration changes were also investigated. An analytical method for the detection and confirmation of serotonin, 5-hydroxy…

It has long been theorized that deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are a primary reservoir of Yersinia pestis in California. However, recent research from other parts of the western USA has implicated deer mice as spillover hosts during epizootic plague transmission. This retrospective study analyzed deer mouse data collected for plague surveillance by public health agencies in California from 1971 to 2016 to help elucidate the role of deer mice in plague transmission. The fleas most commonly found on deer mice were poor vectors of Y. pestis and occurred in insufficient numbers to maintain tra…
