Red sea coral contact dermatitis.

Six of nine adults who developed Red Sea coral contact dermatitis had seafood allergies. Contact with the "fire" coral was followed by a series of skin eruptions starting with an immediate pruritic urticaria-like lesion which forced the victims out of the water. Within minutes the affected area became erythematous and edematous with eventual blister formation approximately 6 hours after the initial contact. The blisters resolved, leaving violaceous papules and plaques in a streaky fashion corresponding to where the coral brushed the skin. The lesions became shiny and lichenoid in 3 weeks while

Contact dermatitis from Naphthol AS.

Naphthol AS, a coupling agent in cotton dyeing, caused allergic contact dermatitis in 5 patients, sensitized from wearing a special kind of shirt. Patch tests with Naphthol AS and pieces of shirt were positive in all 5 patients. Analysis of 1 of the shirts revealed the presence of Naphthol AS. 1 patient with hand dermatitis and positive patch tests to Naphthol AS and nickel was a needlewoman, probably sensitized to Naphthol AS from occupational contact with clothes.

Allergic contact dermatitis from bacitracin.

Bacitracin is a commonly used topical antibiotic. Although occasional reports of adverse reactions to bacitracin have appeared in the medical literature, it is considered to be a nonsensitizing agent by most dermatologists. A description of two patients who demonstrated allergic contact dermatitis from bacitracin is presented, with a review of the pertinent literature.

Contact dermatitis to methyl methacrylate.

2 cases of contact dermatitis to methyl methacrylate monomer are presented. The patients are nurses who mixed bone cement at orthopedic operations. During the procedure, they used 2 pairs of gloves (latex). Butyl rubber gloves are recommended for methyl methacrylate monomer to avoid sensitization and/or cumulative irritant contact dermatitis on the hands.

Thoughts on irritant contact dermatitis.

An attempt is made to formulate some kind of working hypothesis concerning the pathophysiology, clinical appearance and treatment of irritant contact dermatitis. Acute irritant dermatitis may be caused by one single overwhelming external exposure of comparatively short duration. It is usually accidental and therefore recognized early as cause and effect. Chronic irritant dermatitis may be the result of a too early repetition of one impairing factor (chronic irritant dermatitis "traumiteration' type), but is more commonly the result of the influence of a variety of stimuli, each starting to be

Contact dermatitis in black patients.

Black patients readily acquire allergic contact dermatitis from such contactants as paraphenylenediamine, nickel, chromates, and mercaptobenzothiazole. Such dermatitis is often complicated by hyperpigmentation and lichenification unless treated early anf vigorously with systemic corticosteroids. Patch testing is reliable on black skin. In addition, acne veneate (pomade acne, Vaselinoderma), which is characterized by noninflammatory acneiform lesions, is very common in black persons. Finally, the old wives' tale that blacks do not get poison ivy may be laid to rest, along with the popular notio
