Neonatal erythroderma: diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Erythroderma a life-threatening entity during the first one month, and many a time, a manifestation of genodermatosis, immune deficiency, psoriasis, metabolic diseases, and infections. Atopic dermatitis presenting as erythroderma is usually observed later, after this one-month period, and hence not a common differential for neonatal exfoliative dermatitis. Although a rare entity, there is a paucity of studies on this and in contrast to adults, some may manifest as cardinal signs of primary disease conditions.

A suspected case of trimethoprim/sulfonamide-induced localized exfoliation.

A variety of skin reactions have been associated with the use of sulfonamides. Most of the reactions are uneventful and abate with drug discontinuation. Rare but severe skin reactions can occur and include the Stevens-Johnson syndrome and exfoliative dermatitis. Dermal reactions appear to be the most commonly reported adverse effect in children. Drug continuance following the development of a mild skin rash may be associated with the development of a more severe dermal reaction. This report summarizes a case involving a six-year-old white girl who developed exfoliative dermatitis confined to t

Association between lesional or non lesional S. aureus strains from patients with impetigo and exfoliative toxin production. No association with SmaI PFGE patterns.

Contrasting data are reported in the literature on the percent positivity rates (13.5%-100%) of exfoliative toxin (ET) production by S. aureus strains isolated from impetigo patients in Japan and in France. In the present study, by means of a recently available latex-test, toxin-A (ETA) or toxin-B (ETB) production was found in 67.6% of the 34 S. aureus strains isolated from 19 lesional (63.2%) and 15 non-lesional (nose or pharynx, 73.3%) areas of patients with impetigo (with no significant difference between the lesional and non-lesional isolates). ETA + ETB were produced by 44.1% of the strai

An overview of equine dermatoses characterized by scaling and crusting.

Scaling and/or crusting are common clinical findings associated with equine skin diseases. Scaling and crusting may be associated with pruritic or nonpruritic dermatoses. This article focuses on those conditions that are usually nonpruritic in horses. They include the infectious dermatoses, the keratinization/seborrheic disorders, photosensitization, and the immunologic/inflammatory disorders, including pemphigus foliaceus, equine exfoliative eosinophilic dermatitis and stomatitis, and equine histiocytic dermatitis (sarcoidosis). Clinical signs that help differentiate the various disorders are

Cytokine and nitric oxide production in an adult patient with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.

Staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome (SSSS) is an exfoliative dermatitis resultant from the infection with exfoliative-toxin-producing (ET) Staphylococcus aureus. This syndrome usually occurs in children, while adult cases are generally linked to renal-deficiency or immunossupresion. A case of a 74 year old woman presenting SSSS after hospital admission due to cardiovascular disorders is presented and discussed. Cytokines (TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-6, IL-13 and IL-10) and nitric oxide (NO) production in vitro by whole blood leukocytes (WBL) were investigated. Leukocytes stimulated by lipopolysa

Clinical, histopathological and immunological characteristics of exfoliative cutaneous lupus erythematosus in 25 German short-haired pointers.

Clinical, histopathological and immunological features of exfoliative cutaneous lupus erythematosus, an uncommon generalized exfoliative dermatitis occurring exclusively in German short-haired pointers, were characterized in 25 dogs. The disease affects young adult dogs and its familial incidence strongly suggests a hereditary origin. Lesions were characterized by scaling and alopecia affecting 100 (25/25) and 76% (19/25) of dogs, respectively. Follicular casts were present in 28% (7/25) of dogs. The muzzle, pinnae and dorsum were typically affected. Generalized skin lesions were described in

Exfoliative erythroderma at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi.

BACKGROUND: Exfoliative erythroderma (EE), (Synonyms: Exfoliative dermatitis, Red man syndrome) is a clinical syndrome characterised by generalised erythema and scale. It is an important cause of functional skin failure and associated high morbidity and variable mortality rates. OBJECTIVES: To study demographics, aetiology, complications and clinical outcomes of exfoliative erythroderma (EE) on patients attending Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). DESIGN: Cross- sectional descriptive study. SETTING: Kenyatta National Hospital, Dermatology Unit. SUBJECTS: All available medical records on inp

Art of prevention: Practical interventions in lip-licking dermatitis.

Dry, cracked lips are a common occurrence in both cold winter months and arid climates, leading many patients to experience discomfort year-round. Lip-licking is a compensatory measure that perpetuates the condition and often leads to lip-licking dermatitis. In patients in whom this compensatory measure becomes a chronic habit, other sequelae such as irritant contact dermatitis, cheilitis simplex, angular cheilitis, factitial cheilitis, secondary infections, and exfoliative cheilitis can arise. Given the high prevalence of lip-licking and subsequent dermatitis, it is important to counsel patie

Clinical syndromes caused by staphylococcal epidermolytic toxin.

Coagulase-positive staphylococci of phage group II produce an epidermolytic toxin that results in a spectrum of diseases that include localized bullous impetigo, generalized scarlatiniform syndrome without exfoliation, and staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome (SSSS). The mechanism of action of the toxin occurs at the level of the lower stratum granulosum, resulting in intraepidermal cleavage. Generalized exfoliative dermatitis, or SSSS, is one of the most severe infections characterized by generalized epidermolysis with desquamation. Generalized scarlatiniform syndrome is an erythematous rash

A severe case of bevacizumab-induced thrombotic microangiopathy.

Bevacizumab is a human monoclonal antibody against VEGF. Many adverse reactions about bevacizumab are identified including venous and arterial thromboembolism, nausea, fatigue, alopecia, proteinuria, gastrointestinal system (GIS) perforation, exfoliative dermatitis, and peripheral edema and thrombocytopenia. In this paper, we report a case of bevacizumab-induced dose-dependent, toxicity-mediated drug-induced thrombotic microangiopathy.
