Clinical Efficacy of 5-Fluorouracil and Bleomycin in Dermatology.

Bleomycin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are widely used in various dermatological disorders. Both drugs are well-recognized as antineoplastic drugs and exert their effect by blocking the cell cycle. Topical and intralesional formulations are available and have been studied in both non-neoplastic and cancerous lesions. However, data comparing the effect of bleomycin and 5-FU in the dermatological disorders are limited. This review outlines the action mechanisms of both drugs and compares their clinical efficacies in a wide range of dermatologic diseases including hypertrophic scar, wart, skin cance

Effect of YH0618 soup on chemotherapy-induced toxicity in patients with cancer who have completed chemotherapy: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cancer has been staying at a high level worldwide in recent years. With advances in cancer diagnosis and therapy strategy, the survival rate of patients with cancer has been increasing, but the side effects of these treatments, especially chemotherapy, are obvious even when the chemotherapy ceases. YH0618, a prescription, has showed efficacy in reducing chemotherapy-induced toxicity through long clinical practice. However, there is no scientific research exploring the effects of YH0618 in patients with cancer. Therefore, using a randomized controlled trial, this st

Targeting mitochondria in dermatological therapy: beyond oxidative damage and skin aging.

INTRODUCTION: The analysis of the role of the mitochondria in oxidative damage and skin aging has been a significant aspect of dermatological research. Mitochondria generate most reactive oxygen species (ROS) which, in excess, are cytotoxic and DNA-damaging and promote (photo-)aging. However, ROS also possesses key physiological and regulatory functions and mitochondrial dysfunction is prominent in several not primarily senescence-associated skin diseases and skin cancers. Although many standard dermatotherapeutics modulate mitochondrial function, dermatological therapy rarely targets the mito

Dermatological conditions associated with HIV medication in a cohort of Greek patients initiating antiretroviral therapy: 1988-2013.

Objectives: Treatment of HIV infection has evolved from a single antiretroviral agent to combination therapy, which has dramatically improved both the quality of life and life expectancy of affected patients. The aim of this study was to review HIV treatment-associated dermatological conditions observed in adult patients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in a single tertiary care referral centre over time. Methods: We reviewed the files of HIV-positive patients seen at the Dermatology Department, AIDS Clinic of the Andreas Syggros Hospital, Athens, Greece who had initiated ART from 1988 t

JAK Inhibitor Safety in Atopic Dermatitis and Alopecia Areata: A 4.5-Year Real-World Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: JAK inhibitors (JAKi) represent a novel therapeutic approach for treating the immune-mediated dermatologic diseases alopecia areata (AA) and atopic dermatitis (AD). JAKi have shown a favorable safety profile in controlled clinical trials; however, real-world safety data in routine dermatologic practice remain limited. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety of JAKis (abrocitinib, baricitinib, upadacitinib, and ritlecitinib) in patients with AA or AD in a real-world setting. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective observational study based on electronic

[Translated aticle] Topical and Oral Roflumilast in Dermatology: A Narrative Review.

Oral roflumilast is a phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor approved for the prevention of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis. In dermatology, topical roflumilast is authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of plaque psoriasis and mild to moderate seborrheic dermatitis. Several studies have described the off-label use of roflumilast in dermatology, including a randomized controlled trial showing its usefulness in the treatment of psoriasis; case reports and small series have also reported successful outcomes in hidradenitis suppurat

Pulse intravenous cyclophosphamide therapy for dermatologic disorders.

Cyclophosphamide is a potent immunosuppressive agent that has an important role in the treatment of autoimmune, neoplastic, granulomatous, and neutrophilic disorders. Pulse intravenous cyclophosphamide has been shown to be efficacious for several dermatologic disorders, particularly pemphigus vulgaris, with a low incidence of toxicity reported. As reported earlier, studies performed on the use of pulse intravenous cyclophosphamide in the treatment of a variety of dermatology-related diseases strongly suggest that the toxicities frequently noted with the use of oral cyclophosphamide therapy may

The role of Helicobacter pylori infection in skin diseases: facts and controversies.

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that is considered a causative agent of peptic ulcer disease, gastric lymphoma, and gastric carcinoma. H pylori triggers an intense leucocyte infiltration of the gastric submucosa, an action that is mediated by proinflammatory cytokines. Because this pathogenetic mechanism is common to many other diseases, H pylori seroprevalence has also been investigated in other diseases. H pylori seropositivity is associated with various dermatologic disorders. Although the precise role of H pylori is unknown in these diseases, the organism can be eradicated

Photodynamic therapy in dermatology: the next five years.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has had a rapid insurgence into the dermatologic armamentarium of clinicians from all over the world. Its use in actinic keratoses and in non-melanoma skin cancers is well described. Additional uses, including its use in the treatment of photorejuvenation and acne vulgaris and related disorders, are gaining more widespread use. More recent descriptions, including its potential use as a chemoprevention agent, warrant further investigations and discussions. PDT is a global treatment modality and physicians and investigators must view the therapy as such, and use the be

Efficacy and safety of vancomycin versus 13 alternatives in MRSA-confirmed skin and soft tissue infections: a meta-analysis of 39 randomized controlled trials.

PURPOSE: Vancomycin is the standard therapy for suspected or confirmed Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI). Although newer anti-MRSA agents claim improved efficacy and safety, evidence in microbiologically confirmed MRSA-SSTI remains limited and heterogenous. Thus, this study aimed to systematically compare the efficacy and safety of alternative agents versus vancomycin in adults with confirmed MRSA-SSTI. METHODS: Three databases were searched until August 05, 2025, to retrieve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from published meta-analyse

Off-label use of biologicals in the management of inflammatory oral mucosal disease.

The recent development of novel biologic immunomodulators effective in the treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory conditions has led to their widespread use in rheumatology and dermatology. These include the tumour necrosis factor-alpha antagonists, infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab and the T-cell modulator modifiers efalizumab and alefacept. In dermatology, although these agents are licensed only for psoriasis, increasingly off-label use has extended to a number of conditions in which oral mucosal disease is a significant component. These include Behçet's disease, recurrent apthous sto

Current concepts in dermatology. I.

Some of the more recent advances and newer concepts about certain dermatological conditions are presented. Untoward reactions to drugs, whether to systemic or topical agents, are discussed in detail; emphasis is placed on their frequency and on the diversity of clinical findings. In the management of certain skin tumours (hemangiomas and melanocytic nevi) it is essential that the natural history of the lesion be considered. It is generally agreed that the answer to the problem of staphylococcal infection of the skin will be found in the host rather than the staphylococcus. Keratoacanthoma is a

[Fungal and bacterial nail infections].

Fungal and bacterial infections are very common causes of nail deformity. The majority of fungal nail infections are caused by dermatophytes. Dermatophytosis result from a human contamination. A dermatophyte is always a pathogenic agent. Very effective drugs are available to treat dermatophyte nail infections. Yeasts of the genus Candida, notably C. albicans are the second most common cause of nail infection. The infections of nails due to Candida and bacteria are related with Candida sp and bacteria which are common commensals of the gastrointestinal tract, vagina or skin. Except C. albicans

The versatility of azelaic acid in dermatology.

Azelaic acid has numerous pharmacological uses in dermatology. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties are thought to correlate with its efficacy in papulopustular rosacea and acne vulgaris, amongst other cutaneous conditions. We conducted a review of the literature on the use of azelaic acid in dermatology using key terms 'acne', 'azelaic acid', 'dermatology', 'melasma', 'rosacea', searching databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed. Only articles in English were chosen. The level of evidence was evaluated and selected accordingly listing the studies with the highest level of evi

Vitamins and the skin: Vitamin A and retinoids in dermatology.

Vitamin A and analogs are widely used in dermatology, with retinoids being natural and synthetic vitamin A derivatives. Topical retinoids (especially tretinoin and tretinoin precursors) can diminish photoaging and contribute to the thickening and restoration of skin collagen. Retinoids used as therapeutic agents include oral retinoids (eg, isotretinoin, acitretin, alitretinoin, and bexarotene) and topical retinoids (eg, isotretinoin, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, and trifarotene). Although retinoids have traditionally been used for skin disorders of keratinization, such as psoriasis, pityr

Characteristics and Efficacy of Two Topical Therapeutic Agents for Onychomycosis.

Tinea pedis and tinea unguium are the most common dermatophytoses seen in the daily practice of dermatology. According to a report in Japan Foot Week 2006, it is estimated that about 1 in 5 Japanese have tinea pedis and that about 1 in 10 have tinea unguium. Thus far, use of oral antifungal agents has been the first-line therapy for onychomycosis. Many patients with onychomycosis, however, are elderly and have concomitant diseases as well as liver function disorder. Moreover, oral medications are reportedly associated with risks of impaired liver function and interactions. Due to such risks, t
