Thrush, diaper rash, and vaginal yeast infection are all common manifestations of candida. But for the immunocompromised patient, this common fungal species can cause a host of problems, including life-threatening infections.

The use of reusable diapers, often made of cotton and bamboo material, is becoming more widespread in France--with the "eco" fashion, as they are considered more natural, ecologic and economic. We report 5 cases of papulonodular lesions in convex skin areas associated with the use of these diapers in infants. One case was typical Sevestre and Jacquet erosive dermatitis. The 4 others presented skin-coloured umbilicated papules or nodules with slight or no erythema and could be considered early-stage Sevestre and Jacquet erosive dermatitis, granuloma gluteale (1 case) or pseudo-verrucous papules

Since the 1960s, cloth diapers have been replaced by disposable diapers. The evolution of healthier skin in the diaper area has been demonstrated in parallel to that of disposable diapers. The improvements of disposable diapers--fit, dryness, comfort--have been based on the understanding of factors playing a role in the development of diaper dermatitis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Excessive skin hydration from occlusive coverings such as absorbent articles, bandages, etc. has been known to compromise the skin's barrier properties. Damage to the stratum corneum occurs from prolonged exposure to wetness and limited product breathability, which reduces evaporation. Protection from wetness may be imparted by barrier materials, such as lotions and ointments on the skin. Barrier materials are traditionally applied by hand from bulk containers (bottle or tube). In recent years, diapers have been made that contain barrier ointments designed to transfer to th

The effectiveness of oxyquinoline ointment for diaper dermatitis was tested in a randomized double-blind trial. Compared to a combined control treatment group using Desitin or A & D ointment, use of oxyquinoline ointment significantly improved rash.

A 17-month-old boy with a toed-out left lower extremity was presented for evaluation. Before coming to the doctor, the mother had applied a zinc oxide lotion to treat a simple diaper rash in the groin. The radiologist did not remove the boy's diaper for the radiographic examination and so did not notice the lotion. The first radiograph showed what looked like multiple soft-tissue calcifications in the groin, but the radiopacities had been produced by the zinc oxide. This case serves as a reminder to be aware that metal-containing substances both on and in the body can produce radiopacities.

Irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD) is frequently observed in young children but can affect individuals throughout their lifespan. The broader term incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is used to describe inflammatory skin reactions from prolonged exposure to urine and/or feces. This review compares IAD and IDD in pediatric and geriatric populations, focusing on their pathogenesis, clinical considerations, and management. Both conditions involve prolonged bodily fluid exposure disrupting the skin barrier, making infants and older adults particularly susceptible due to their age-related skin c

Diaper dermatitis is an ever-present condition among infants. Little is known about the prevalence among infants in the NICU. This article presents an adaptation of the skin safety model (SSM) for the infant in the NICU. The concepts of the model were extracted, defined, and integrated into an adapted SSM model to provide a focus on the infant with diaper dermatitis in the intensive care setting. It is essential to include all factors of the infant's clinical characteristics and hospital experience in the modeling to accurately predict risk of skin vulnerability in this infant population.

Diaper dermatitis is a common condition that often prompts parents to seek medical attention. Irritant diaper dermatitis is by far the most common cause, but numerous potentially serious diseases can present with changes of the skin in the diaper area. The differential diagnosis can include psoriasis, metabolic disorders, rare immune diseases and infection. Clinical examination can be helpful in distinguishing the underlying cause. General screening laboratory tests, as well as select testing when a specific condition is suspected, can be used to challenge or confirm the putative diagnosis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Infantile diaper dermatitis is a common, acute inflammatory reaction of the skin around diaper among infants. This study was undertaken to compare the effect of topical application of Bentonite and Calendula creams on the improvement of infantile diaper dermatitis.
METHODS: This double blind randomized controlled trial was undertaken on 100 patients of infantile diaper dermatitis. The 100 participants were randomly assigned into two groups of 50 each, and were prescribed the coded medicine. The mothers were trained to apply the cream and level of improvement was judge

Irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD) is a form of contact dermatitis occurring in the diaper area as a consequence of disruption of the barrier function of the skin through prolonged contact with faeces and urine. Despite advances in diaper technology, it is a condition that still occurs regularly in young children. To combat this, barrier preparations can be used to protect the skin by coating the surface of the skin and/or by supplying lipids that can penetrate the intercellular spaces of the stratum corneum. In this review, the pathophysiology of IDD is outlined and its prevention and treatment
