Anisotropic conductivity tensor imaging for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) using magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (MR-DTI).

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a widely used non-invasive brain stimulation technique by applying low-frequency weak direct current via electrodes attached on the head. The tDCS using a fixed current between 1 and 2 mA has relied on computational modelings to achieve optimal stimulation effects. Recently, by measuring the tDCS current induced magnetic field using an MRI scanner, the internal current pathway has been successfully recovered. However, up to now, there is no technique to visualize electrical properties including the electrical anisotropic conductivity, effective

Diffusion tensor imaging characterization of occult brain damage in relapsing neuromyelitis optica using 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging techniques.

Studies of relapsing neuromyelitis optica (RNMO) using advanced MRI techniques are limited compared with those done on multiple sclerosis (MS). The present study used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate whether occult brain damage exists in RNMO patients. DTI scans using a 3.0T MRI scanner were performed in 24 clinically confirmed RNMO patients whose conventional brain MRI results were normal, and also in 24 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. DTI data were processed to generate fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) maps, and region of interest (ROI) analyse

Combined functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging demonstrate widespread modified organisation in malformation of cortical development.

A patient with a mild left hemiparesis and a malformation of cortical development in the right hemisphere was investigated with fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and DTI (diffusion tensor imaging). The motor cortex was studied using a finger tapping fMRI experiment. The fibre orientation was studied by displaying the principal eigenvector of the diffusion tensor in the spatially normalised brain of the patient and of control subjects. In addition, the anisotropy (directionality) of water diffusion of the patient was statistically compared with control subjects. The malformation was

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF DIFFUSE LEPTOMENINGEAL OLIGODENDROGLIOMATOSIS IN A DOG WITH "DURAL TAIL SIGN".

A case of diffuse leptomeningeal oligodendrogliomatosis affecting the brain and spinal cord of a dog is presented. A 7.5-year old, male neutered Staffordshire bull terrier presented for evaluation of a chronic history of tetraparesis and seizures, with a multifocal neuroanatomical localization was determined. Extra-axial intradural lesions with an atypical presentation of a dural tail sign were seen on MRI. Histologically, the lesions were consistent with leptomeningeal oligodendrogliomatosis. To the authors' knowledge, a dural tail sign has not previously been reported as an MRI characteristi

Operationalizing diffusion magnetic resonance imaging positivity for detection of vascular contributions to impairment and dementia.

INTRODUCTION: White matter lesions on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (FLAIR-MRI) reflect small vessel disease (SVD) and aid in identifying vascular contributions to impairment and dementia (VCID). Emerging diffusion MRI (dMRI) biomarkers are sensitive to early SVD but the lack of validated approaches for defining dMRI abnormality has limited their clinical utility. METHODS: In 3934 participants (8749 observations) from a population-based sample, we classified 9% as vascular cognitive impairment versus not (VCI+/VCI-) using abnormal FLAIR-MRI and cognitive testi

Distinguishing Early from Late Mild Cognitive Impairment Using Magnetic Resonance Free-Water Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. Differentiating early MCI (EMCI) from late MCI (LMCI) is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention. This study used free-water diffusion tensor imaging (fw-DTI) to investigate white matter differences and voxel-based correlations with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative included 476 healthy controls (CN), 137 EMCI participants, and 62 LMCI participants. Significant MMSE differences were found between the CN and MCI groups, b

Diffusion-tensor magnetic resonance imaging captures increased skeletal muscle fibre diameters in Becker muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an X-linked disorder characterized by slow, progressive muscle damage and muscle weakness. Hallmarks include fibre-size variation and replacement of skeletal muscle with fibrous and adipose tissues, after repeated cycles of regeneration. Muscle histology can detect these features, but the required biopsies are invasive, are difficult to repeat and capture only small muscle volumes. Diffusion-tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) is a potential non-invasive alternative that can calculate muscle fibre diameters when applied with the novel rando

Diagnostic Value and Clinical Application of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Female Pelvic Lesions.

Pelvic inflammatory disease refers to a group of infectious diseases of the female upper genital tract, often caused by ascending infection of vaginitis and cervicitis, causing endometritis, salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic connective tissue inflammation, and/or pelvic peritonitis. PID is the most common and important infectious disease in nonpregnant women of childbearing age, and inflammation in multiple parts often coexists and affects each other. The functional MRI techniques currently used in pelvic floor muscle injury are magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging, T2 mapping,

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic viral hepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate noninvasive methods for the assessment of liver fibrosis are urgently needed. This prospective study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) for the staging of liver fibrosis and proposed a diagnostic algorithm using DWI to identify cirrhosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. METHODS: One hundred twenty-one treatment-naïve patients with chronic hepatitis B or C were evaluated with DWI followed by liver biopsy on the same day. Breath-hold single-shot echo-planar DWI was performed to measure the apparent diffusion coe

Role of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Evaluation of Clinically Suspected Cholesteatoma Cases.

UNLABELLED: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is the standard treatment for locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) to make tumors operable and facilitate breast conservation surgery (BCS). While pathological complete response (PCR) following NACT is expected to improve outcomes, PCR rates are relatively low except in HER2-positive or triple negative tumors. Radiotherapy (RT), conventionally is administered post-surgery. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), a strategy widely used in other cancers, combines the benefits of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, potentially improving tumor control and bette

Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging Predicts Peripheral Nerve Recovery in a Rat Sciatic Nerve Injury Model.

BACKGROUND: Nerve regeneration after an injury should occur in a timely fashion for function to be restored. Current methods cannot monitor regeneration prior to muscle reinnervation. Diffusion tensor imaging has been previously shown to provide quantitative indices after nerve recovery. The goal of this study was to validate the use of this technology following nerve injury via a series of rat sciatic nerve injury/repair studies. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were prospectively divided by procedure (sham, crush, or cut/repair) and time points (1, 2, 4, and 12 weeks after surgery). At the appr

Magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging in diagnostics of primary fallopian tube carcinoma - is it useful?

PURPOSE: Primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) is the rarest form of female genital malignancy. The imaging applied for suspected adnexal masses includes transvaginal ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but the vast majority of PFTC is recognised intraoperatively. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of seven women with postoperatively histopathological diagnosis of PFTC. To recognise characteristic findings for PFTC, retrospective analysis of preoperative MRI was performed. All patients underwent MRI of the pelvis and abdomen using a

Fornix Under Water? Ventricular Enlargement Biases Forniceal Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging Indices in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Acute anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by reduced brain mass and corresponding increased sulcal and ventricular cerebrospinal fluid. Recent studies of white matter using diffusion tensor imaging consistently identified alterations in the fornix, such as reduced fractional anisotropy (FA). However, because the fornix penetrates the ventricles, it is prone to cerebrospinal fluid-induced partial volume effects that interfere with a valid assessment of FA. We investigated the hypothesis that in the acute stage of AN, FA of the fornix is markedly affected by ventricular volumes.
