Comparative study of lipid metabolism indices (total lipids, separate lipid fractions, level of the lipid peroxidation processes, and antioxidant protection) was carried out in three parasite species collected from the white char in the Lake Kronotskoe: Diphyllobothrium ditremum Crepin, 1825 (Cestoda), Philonema oncorhynchi Kuitunen-Ekbaum, 1933 (Nematoda) H Neoechinorhynchus salmonis Ching, 1984 (Acanthocephala). Acanthocephalans possessed significantly greater levels of total lipids, triacylglycerol, and malondialdehyde; nematodes, of cholesterol and sterol esters; and cestodes, in phospholi…

A review of requests for niclosamide ( Niclocide or Yomesan ) made to the Centers for Disease Control Parasitic Diseases Drug Service indicated that an outbreak of diphyllobothriasis occurred in west coast states in 1980, and in the Los Angeles area in 1981. Our investigation of 52 infections that occurred in 1980 implicates fresh salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as the host for the Diphyllobothrium parasite in 82% of the persons interviewed. We describe here common symptoms of the infection, methods of fish preparation employed by infected individuals, and epidemiologic data. We suggest that change…

Dibothriocephalus ditremus and Dibothriocephalus latus are diphyllobothriidean tapeworms autochthonous to Europe. Their larval stages (plerocercoids) may seriously alter health of their intermediate fish hosts (D. ditremus) or cause intestinal diphyllobothriosis of the final human host (D. latus). Despite numerous data on the internal structure of broad tapeworms, many aspects of the morphology and physiology related to host–parasite co-existence remain unclear for these 2 species. The main objective of this work was to elucidate functional morphology of the frontal part (scolex) of plerocerco

A 72-year-old man with ileocecal lymphadenopathy was found to have Epstein-Barr virus-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma using open biopsy, and an ileostoma was created. R-CHOP-like chemotherapy was initiated, but his malnutrition did not improve. After 3 cycles of chemotherapy, a 2-m-long Cestoda was removed from the stoma and was identified as Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense using mitochondria cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 targeted polymerase chain reaction analysis. Although D. nihonkaiense infections are asymptomatic, the ileostomy was thought to have exacerbated the malabsorption in th…

The effect of cestodes of the genus Diphyllobothrium on the lipoid contents of tissues of freshwater fishes has been studied. The level of general lipids in the liver of burbot and stickleback infected with plerocercoids of D. latum and D. vogeli, respectively, decreases. It occurs in general on account of decrease in contents of structural lipids, phospholipids, while the contents of triacylglycerines, cholesterol and its ethers change but negligibly. Simultaneous parasitism of plerocercoids of D. latum and Triaenophorus nodulosus in the liver of burbot causes especially great changes in the …

Feces examination of 107 stray dogs in Bangkok, Thailand, on intestinal helminths showed the following rates: hookworms 100%, Trichuris vulpis 54.2%, Toxocara canis 6.5%, Gnathostoma spinigerum 2.8%, Spirocerca lupi 17.8%, Diphyllobothrium mansoni 1.9%, and Opisthorchis viverrini 1.9%. Out of these species hockworms (especially A. braziliense), T. canis, G. spinigerum, and D. mansoni are important sources of human cutaneous or visceral larva migrans, the latter two being special parasites of the Far East. Also O. viverrini is limited in its distribution to the Southeast Asian region; it is typ…

Adenocephalus pacificus is a tapeworm parasitic of marine mammals and the main agent of human diphylobothriosis caused by consumption of raw or undercooked marine fishes, being considered as a reemerging disease. Despite having a broad distribution in marine mammals in both hemispheres, plerocercoid larvae in fish have only been reported in the Pacific Ocean, in Peruvian waters, from where most human cases are known. In Argentine waters larval stages of Diphyllobothriidae have been recorded in Merluccius hubbsi, a main fish resource mostly exported frozen, headed and gutted (H&G) or as fillets

Using the methods of light microscopy, eosinophil topography, quantitative and qualitative changes (degranulation level of and a cationic protein content) were studied in the thymus and bursa of 36 herring gull nestlings Larus argentatus mongolicus (Suskin, 1925) 2 weeks after experimental infestation with gull-tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitsch, 1824). Eosinophils in the thymus were located in trabecules, mainly close to the blood vessels, thymic (Hassall's) corpuscles and also directly inside them, while in the bursa they were found within the internodular space. As compared with …
