[Cyclosporine therapy of adult onset Still's disease with disseminated intravascular coagulation].

In April, 1991, a 61-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of pancytopenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Five years prior to admission he had developed high fever, skin eruption and arthralgia which had been improved by antibiotics, but recurred. Steroid therapy was ineffective for pancytopenia and DIC. Laboratory findings were as follows: RBC count, 274 x 10(4)/microliters; WBC count, 470/microliters; Platelets, 6.4 x 10(4)/microliters; fibrinogen, 153mg/dl; FDP, 67.0 micrograms/ml; FDP-D.Dimer, 13040ng/ml; thrombin-antithrombin complex, > 60.0ng/ml; and plasmi

Clinicopathological correlations of disseminated intravascular coagulation in patients with head injury.

To try to define the significance of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in head-injured patients, we correlated clinical, laboratory, and pathological findings in 16 patients with head injury as their main problem who had DIC, who died within 4 days of injury, and who were examined postmortem. Patients were ranked according to the number of abnormal laboratory screening tests for DIC and the severity of these abnormalities. The most frequently abnormal laboratory tests were the fibrinogen degradation products and fibrinogen, followed in order by the activated partial thromboplastin t

Disseminated intravascular coagulation in autopsy cases. Its incidence and clinicopathologic significance.

In a study of 1729 consecutive autopsies, the histopathologic diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) confirmed by the presence of microthrombi in more than two organs was made in 51 cases. Among them, 38 cases (74.5%) were clinically not suspected of having DIC. Microthrombi were most frequent in the kidneys, followed by the lungs, spleen, adrenals, heart, brain, and liver, in descending order of frequency. Furthermore, a wide variety of visceral lesions was another important histologic feature of DIC. Kidney lesions assumed a position of prime importance, and special attent

Hazards of overconcentrated milk formula. Hyperosmolality, disseminated intravascular coagulation and gangrene.

Severe hypertonic dehydration with hyperglycemia developed in a 7-week-old infant girl after she was fed an overconcentrated milk formula for five days. Renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, gangrene of the legs, and coma were added complications. Intravenous rehydration, peritoneal dialysis, and heparin administration corrected the metabolic and coagulation derangements, and renal function returned to normal. Bilateral below-the-knee amputations were performed and the child subsequently learned to walk with artificial limbs. The dangers of overconcentrated formulas in infant f

A Case Report of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation After Intrauterine Fetal Demise.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare, life-threatening complication of pregnancy in which a hypercoagulable state develops secondary to the contact of tissue factor with circulating blood and causes widespread abnormal clotting. This pathological process disrupts normal blood flow, which can cause multi-organ dysfunction and is associated with very high maternal morbidity and mortality. Occurring in two phases, DIC begins with overactive clotting, which leads to the formation of blood clots within the vessels, and ultimately, the overactive clotting process uses up the body's

Beyond the Bruise: Unmasking Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Alcohol-Related Presentations.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare but life-threatening complication encountered in the emergency department (ED). It results from widespread activation of coagulation pathways, leading to simultaneous thrombosis and consumption of clotting factors, often culminating in severe bleeding and multi-organ failure. We report the case of a 39-year-old female with alcohol-related cirrhosis and autoimmune hepatitis who presented to the ED with a minor head injury and active bleeding from a groin ulcer. Her initial evaluation was confounded by alcohol intoxication and suspicion of d

IMMUNOSUPPRESSION CORRELATES WITH THE DETERIORATION OF SEPSIS-INDUCED DISSEMINATED INTRAVASCULAR COAGULATION.

Background: The dysregulated host responses play a crucial role in the pathophysiology process of sepsis-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The study aimed to characterize the dynamic alternation of immune-related biomarkers and their relationship with the progression of DIC during sepsis. Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted in a tertiary care academic hospital. Six hundred forty patients with sepsis were classified into three groups according to the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) score: 383 involved patients without DIC (ISTH

Acute cardiovascular complications of disseminated intravascular coagulation in acute myeloid leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a common complication of all leukemia subtypes, but it is an especially prominent feature of Acute Myeloid Leukemias (AML). DIC complicating AML can lead to a variety of complications, however, its association with acute cardiovascular complications has not been reported before. METHODS: National Inpatient Sample Database was used to procure individuals with AML, and baseline demographics and comorbidities were collected using ICD-10-DM codes. Patients were stratified into those with and without DIC. Greedy propensity matching using

NINJ1 Regulates Platelet Activation and PANoptosis in Septic Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which is closely related to platelet activation, is a key factor leading to high mortality in sepsis. The release of contents from plasma membrane rupture after platelet death further aggravates thrombosis. Nerve injury-induced protein 1 (NINJ1) is a cell membrane protein that mediates membrane disruption, a typical marker of cell death, through oligomerization. Nevertheless, whether NINJ1 is expressed in platelets and regulates the platelet function remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of NINJ1 in human and murine

Relationship of acute type A aortic dissection and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

OBJECTIVE: Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a critical disease presenting with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). However, the relationship between the degree of DIC and false lumen conditions remains unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the degree of preoperative DIC and the outcomes of ATAAD treatment. METHODS: A total of 124 patients with ATAAD (70 men and 54 women) treated from January 2012 to January 2020 were included in the present study. The correlation between the preoperative Japanese Association for Acute Medicine (JAAM) DIC score and the false lumen diam

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens superimposed on disseminated intravascular coagulation in COVID-19.

COVID-19 infection has several cardiovascular implications, and coagulopathy is a common abnormality in these patients, often coupled with elevated plasma fibrinogen and D-dimer levels, contributing to adverse outcomes. Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) is a rare manifestation of deep vein thrombosis. It is life-threatening and can rapidly lead to venous gangrene of the extremity. Only a few cases of COVID-19 associated with PCD are reported in the literature, despite thromboembolism being the common paradigm between the two diseases. We present the case of a 64-year-old adult with acute severe
