Asthma from inhalation of Triplochiton scleroxylon (Samba) wood dust.

The inhalation of wood dust may produce allergic rhinitis, asthma, or contact dermatitis in sensitized patients. We describe a patient with occupational asthma induced by the inhalation of samba (Triplochiton scleroxylon) wood dust. A specific bronchial provocation test was conducted, and the patient showed a significant decrease in forced-expiratory volume in first second (FEV1) after the inhalation of nebulized samba wood allergens. We suggest an IgE-mediated mechanism since the patient had a positive skin test and positive specific IgE determinations using an extract of samba wood. SDS-PAGE…

Occupational exposure to dust: inflammation and ischaemic heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: To review the possible association between occupational exposure to dust and ischaemic heart disease (IHD). METHODS: A literature search was performed of relevant studies regarding IHD in specific exposures to dust. The chosen exposures were arsenic, asbestos, beryllium, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and quartz. The chosen occupations were farmers, paper and paper pulp workers, sawyers, and welders. DISCUSSION: A theory was launched in 1995 that urban particulate air pollution may provoke alveolar inflammation, with release of mediators capable of increasing blood coagu…

Inhalation toxicity of chromium from Whetlerite dust in rats.

The acute inhalation toxicity and metabolic fate of chromium and copper from Whetlerite dust in rats were investigated. Groups of male and female, Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to Whetlerite dust and base carbon dust as outlined in the OECD Limit Test guidelines. At 14, 28 and 180 days post-exposure, rats were evaluated for gross pathological changes and tissues were collected for chromium and copper determination. Four deaths occurred during or post-exposure, but did not appear to be compound related. No gross pathological changes were observed at necropsy in either group. Organ chromium c…

Human nail dust: hazard to chiropodists or merely nuisance?

This survey was carried out in response to anxiety among chiropodists as earlier reports had raised the possibility of respiratory damage as … sensitization to trichophytons was common (16.5 per cent) but did not produce chest problems. Nail dust might produce symptoms by simple irritation of the upper respiratory tract.

Toxicity of intratracheally instilled cotton dust, cellulose, and endotoxin.

Cotton dust includes respirable particles containing endotoxin and elastase, agents associated with emphysema. To examine whether a respirable fraction of cotton dust could produce emphysema in an animal model, we intratracheally instilled hamsters with respirable cotton dust particles (0.75 mg/100-g animal), mass median aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 4.8 microns, twice weekly for 6 wk. We also examined whether instilled endotoxin (255 micrograms/100-g animal) could produce emphysema in hamsters and whether cellulose (0.75 mg/100-g animal) is an appropriate inert comparison dust. A…

Unifying concepts underlying the effects of organic dust exposures.

Defense mechanisms protect the lung very well from inhaled organic dusts. With sufficient exposure to certain dusts, however, susceptible individuals develop hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), the organic dust toxic syndrome (ODTS), or asthma. Mucous membrane irritation (MMI) bothers some individuals inhaling grain dust. Allergic asthma is caused by IgE-mediated immunologic responses to allergenic dust contaminants. ODTS can be explained by a nonimmunologic release of interleukin 1 (IL-1) and perhaps other endogenous pyrogens from alveolar macrophages by endotoxin or other ingredients of dusts…

Health effects of organic dust exposure in dairy farmers.

Exposure to farm dust may cause asthma, rhinitis, allergic alveolitis, organic dust toxic syndrome, and chronic bronchitis. Febrile reactions to inhaled dusts are common and are usually of a toxic rather than an allergic type. Some evidence indicates that dairy farmers may have an increased prevalence of chronic bronchitis, allergic asthma, rhinitis, and chronic airflow limitation, but this has not been conclusively shown. Storage mites and cow dander are important allergens in dairy farming. Inflammation of airways may in part be caused by immediate or delayed hypersensitivity. Other mechanis…

Smoking and cotton dust effects in cotton textile workers.

Cotton textile workers have an increased prevalence of both obstructive and restrictive lung function patterns compared with control subjects. Similar abnormal patterns may occur with respiratory diseases of other etiologies, notably those associated with cigarette smoking. The shape of the maximum expiratory flow volume (MEFV) curve has been used to characterize patterns of lung function abnormality. To better evaluate the respiratory effects of cotton dust exposure and to contrast them with those of cigarette smoking, we defined a new functional parameter (angle beta) related to the shape of…

Silica-dust-exposed mine workers with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis).

The incidence of scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) was found to be increased in a population of black men who were gold miners. Ten men with scleroderma were detected during a five-year period. The annual incidence of the disease in this population in the group aged 33 to 57 years was estimated to be 81.8 per million. All of the men with scleroderma had disturbances of pulmonary function which were not present in a control group of silica-dust-exposed men without scleroderma. Not all of the subjects with scleroderma had silicosis, but all had been occupationally exposed to silica dust. There wa…

Wood-related occupations, wood dust exposure, and sinonasal cancer.

A case-control study was conducted to examine the relations between type of woodworking and the extent of wood dust exposure to the risks for specific histologic types of sinonasal cancer. In cooperation with the major treatment centers in the Netherlands, 116 male patients newly diagnosed between 1978 and 1981 with primary malignancies of epithelial origin of this site were identified for study. Living controls were selected from the municipal registries, and deceased controls were selected from the national death registry. Interviews were completed for 91 (78%) cases and 195 (75%) controls. …

Organic dust toxicity (pulmonary mycotoxicosis) associated with silo unloading.

An acute febrile illness associated with unloading silos occurs more frequently than any other farm associated respiratory illness in mid state New York. This report describes 29 cases of organic dust toxic syndrome (also known as pulmonary mycotoxicosis) occurring in 24 men and one woman with a mean age of 29 years. In 16 instances more than one worker was exposed to the dust, and in 12 of these shared exposures more than one worker became ill. Patients presented 5.3 (SD 3.3) hours after inhalation of organic dust and mould with fever (79%), myalgia (76%), chest tightness (72%), cough (66%), …

Sensitization to house dust mites in different climatic areas.

With the use of local meteorologic data, the mean monthly indoor relative humidity (RH) was calculated for the area of residence of each of 774 children with respiratory symptoms who were referred to our allergy clinic. Seven hundred fourteen children lived in areas in which the mean indoor RH was 50% or more for 4 or more mo per year ("humid" areas), and 60 children lived where this RH was present for no more than 2 mo per year ("dry" areas). Of those children from the "humid" areas, the skin prick test was positive to Dermatophagoides farinae in 31% and D. pteronyssinus in 40%, whereas in th

Effect of dust exposure in Ontario cotton textile mills.

The acute effect of cotton dust on respiratory function was assessed. Respiratory questionnaires, preshift and postshift pulmonary function testing and air sampling were completed for 176 cotton textile workers and 33 controls. The results showed a dose-response relationship between vertical elutriator dust measurements and change in forced expiratory volume at 1 s (FEV1) over the work shift. Dust levels of 0.2 mg/m3 or less were not associated with significant acute falls in FEV1.

Nepheline rock dust pneumoconiosis. A report of 2 cases.

Two cases of nepheline rock dust pneumoconiosis are presented. Radiologically, this is seen as a diffuse increase in interstitial lung markings, lymphadenopathy, air-space disease, and atelectasis secondary to extrinsic compression by enlarged hilar lymph nodes. Major differential diagnoses include carcinoma of the lung, sarcoidosis, and interstitial lung disease caused by other inorganic dusts. Nepheline rock dust pneumoconiosis should be considered when the above radiological changes are observed and an occupational exposure to inorganic dust is documented.

Dust exposure and mortality in chrysotile mining, 1910-75.

We report a further follow-up of a birth cohort of 11 379 workers exposed to chrysotile. The cohort consisted of 10 939 men and 440 women, born 1891-1920, who had worked for at least a month in the mines and mills of Asbestos and Thetford Mines in Quebec. For all subjects, length of service and estimates of accumulated dust exposure were obtained, with a smoking history for the vast majority. Three methods of analysis, two based on the "man-years" methods, the other a "case-and-multiple-controls" approach, gave results consistent with one another and with previous analyses. By the end of 1975,…

Airborne particle radioactivity during desert dust days in Cyprus.

Mediterranean countries are often affected by desert dust storms, which have significant effects on the environment and public health. We compared airborne particle radioactivity levels during desert dust and non-dust days in Cyprus. Gross α- and β-radioactivity from Total Suspended Particle (TSP) samples, collected at two urban routine monitoring stations in Limassol and Nicosia, were available for the period 2017-2020 and 2008-2020, respectively. Radionuclides 137Cs and 40K, from TSP samples, were also available from a semi-industrial monitoring station in Nicosia during 2008-2020. Informati…
