BACKGROUND: Many techniques have been described to correct prominent ears, including cartilage-suturing, cartilage-scoring, and cartilage-breaking techniques. Understanding the topography and anatomy of the auricular cartilage is crucial for performing safe otoplasty with consistent results.
METHODS: Two hundred consecutive patients with prominent ears were operated on using a modified Mustardé and Furnas technique with some refinements and without performing any cartilage scoring or excision. Adequate dissection and exposure of cartilage and precise repositioning of the tail of helix (cauda

SUMMARY: Understanding how to remove and retain the relatively large residual auricle is important in concha-type microtia reconstruction. The authors present a method for concha-type microtia reconstruction using a delayed postauricular skin flap. A total of 40 patients with concha-type microtia who underwent ear reconstruction using a delayed postauricular skin flap were retrospectively examined. Reconstruction was performed in three stages. The first stage consisted of preparing a delayed postauricular skin flap and dealing with the residual auricle including removal of the upper residual a

A review of our patients since Dr. Tanzer's retirement in 1970 shows good and lasting results after reconstruction of microtia using autogenous cartilage frameworks and staged procedures. There has been no evidence of shrinkage or distortion of the cartilage in any of our own patients, and the majority of them are pleased with their ears. With a cooperative and well-motivated patient and surgeons who are skilled and experienced in the procedure, ears can be made with a relatively normal size, shape, and position to match closely the other side. We continue to feel strongly that autogenous cart

OBJECTIVE: Ear reconstruction is a complex multi-staged procedure in otology. A variety of surgical strategies have been devised for the reconstruction. In this paper, we present our 10-year experience in microtia reconstruction using tissue expander and autogenous cartilage in microtia reconstruction.
METHODS: The process of our method is divided into three stages. In the first stage, the kidney-shape tissue expander was implanted subcutaneously. With 1 month of inflation, the tissue expander offered the non-hairbearing and well-vascularized skin. In the second stage, we improved the techniq

Over the course of 12 months, a plastic surgical team from Paris, France, undertook 2 intensive ear reconstruction missions with plastic surgeons from the CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital in Uganda. A cohort of over 30 adult women was assessed having been subjected to ear amputations by members of the Lords Resistance Army in Northern Uganda in the 1990s. The patients were identified, mobilized, and transferred to Kampala for surgery by a charitable arm of the Watoto Church, known as Living Hope. The surgical team performed 15 ear reconstruction cases during the first 1-week mission and 16 ear re

BACKGROUND: Prominent ears have a negative impact on patients' psychosocial well-being. There are numerous surgical correction techniques described, but the majority have high complication and recurrence rates. In this article, the authors present a stitchless technique that takes advantage of different approaches to minimize complications and recurrences.
METHODS: The authors prospectively studied patients who underwent a bilateral double triangular cartilage excision otoplasty in an outpatient setting. This prominent ear setback technique is based on a specific cartilage excision to mechani

Total or subtotal reconstruction of the tympanic membrane with cartilage palisades counteracts the tendency to retraction observed in ears with functional problems of the tube or altered gas exchange of the mucosa, in contrast with "soft" autologous materials such as temporal fascia or perichondrium. Because of its low turnover, cartilage is more resistant to the prolonged absence of neovascularization from the periphery in (sub) total perforation making it more resistant to infection. However, the use of palisade cartilage has been questioned for the functional recuperation of the middle ear

Over the past few years, the technique of elevating the buried ear framework in the second stage of microtia correction has shifted from skin grafting to the use of flaps and cartilage blocks in the retroauricular sulcus. While the temporoparietal fascial flap should be reserved for secondary procedures and the treatment of complications, the mastoid fascial flap is inadequate by itself and needs an additional cartilage graft. Here, we describe a new flap, the combined posterior temporoparietal and galeal fascial flap, for the elevation of the buried ear cartilage. The flap is robust, with a d…

The ear has a unique architecture of cartilage and skin. The incidence of the prominent ear is about 5%. Surgical correction of the prominent or protruding ear can be carried out either by anterior or posterior approach. We created antihelical fold of cartilage by utilizing a posterior incision to score the anterior cartilage of the lateral scapha with a knife. Sutures were often used to uphold the produced fold. The additional procedure of conchal reduction and concho-mastoid suture was done when required. The objective of our research is to evaluate the patient's and surgeon's satisfaction w

METHODS: From January 2015 to January 2021, auricular reconstruction was performed in 38 adult patients (39 ears) of congenital microtia based on autologous costal cartilage. The whole procedure was divided into 2 stages: stage I, the individualized framework carved with autologous costal cartilage was inserted into subcutaneous pocket in the mastoid region; then, the earlobe was transposed backward; and stage II, ear elevation, harvesting the retroauricular fascial flap to cover the support scaffold and closing the defect with free skin graft, was performed.
RESULTS: All patients successfull

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze the anatomical and audiologic results in more than 1,000 cartilage tympanoplasties that utilized a logical application of several techniques for the management of the difficult ear (cholesteatoma, recurrent perforation, atelectasis). Our hypothesis was that pathology and status of the ossicular chain should dictate the technique used to achieve optimal outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study of patients undergoing cartilage tympanoplasty between July 1994 and July 2001. A computerized otologic database and patient cha
