Evaluating structure and content of parent-implemented early logopaedic intervention models following the three stages of communicative development in children with cleft lip and/or palate: Systematic literature review with narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The development of communication, speech and language follows three stages (development of the parent-child relationship, interactions and actual speech and language acquisition). Children born with cleft lip and/or palate are at increased risk of communicative problems while parents may be going through an emotionally difficult time. Early parent-implemented logopaedic intervention that supports both parents and child is important. Three systematic reviews have examined the effects of early speech and language interventions, but not their structure and content. AIMS: To investiga

A Comprehensive Multilevel Analysis of the Bucharest Early Intervention Project: Causal Effects on Recovery From Early Severe Deprivation.

OBJECTIVE: The Bucharest Early Intervention Project is the first randomized controlled trial of foster care as an alternative to institutional care. The authors synthesized data from nearly 20 years of assessments of the trial to determine the overall intervention effect size across time points and developmental domains. The goal was to quantify the overall effect of the foster care intervention on children's outcomes and examine sources of variation in this effect, including domain, age, and sex assigned at birth. METHODS: An intent-to-treat approach was used to examine the causal effects of

Scaling-up Child and Youth Mental Health Services: Assessing Coverage of a County-Wide Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative During One Fiscal Year.

PURPOSE: In the U.S., the percentage of youth in need of evidence-based mental health practices (EBPs) who receive them (i.e., coverage rate) is low. We know little about what influences coverage rates. In 2010, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) launched a reimbursement-driven implementation of multiple EBPs in youth mental health care. This study examines two questions: (1) What was the coverage rate of EBPs delivered three years following initial implementation? (2) What factors are associated with the coverage rates? METHODS: To assess coverage rates of publicly i

Social-Emotional Interventions with Children and Youth Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Research Synthesis.

To be successful in school and life individuals need to learn to understand and manage their emotions, get along with others and exercise good judgment. Children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing have long been considered a population at risk for not developing age-appropriate social-emotional skills. The purpose of this study was to identify, review, and summarize the intervention research addressing social and emotional learning with children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing. We examined the research published in professional peer-reviewed journals between the years 1996 and

The Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention for Malaysian families: Four case studies.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the outcomes of implementing the Lidcombe Program, an evidence-based early intervention for stuttering, with four preschool children in Malaysia. Early stuttering intervention is currently underdeveloped in Malaysia, where stuttering treatment is often more assertion-based than evidence-based. Therefore, introducing an evidence-based early stuttering intervention is an important milestone for Malaysian preschoolers who stutter. METHOD: The participants ranged from 3 years 3 months to 4 years 9 months at the start of the study. Beyond-clinic speech samples were

Early experience of Cued Speech enhances speechreading performance in deaf.

It is known that deaf individuals usually outperform normal hearing subjects in speechreading; however, the underlying reasons remain unclear. In the present study, speechreading performance was assessed in normal hearing participants (NH), deaf participants who had been exposed to the Cued Speech (CS) system early and intensively, and deaf participants exposed to oral language without Cued Speech (NCS). Results show a gradation in performance with highest performance in CS, then in NCS, and finally NH participants. Moreover, error analysis suggests that speechreading processing is more accura

Emergent literacy intervention for prekindergarteners at risk for reading failure.

This study examined the effectiveness of an assessment and intervention study targeting prekindergarten children at risk for reading failure. Across 38 child care sites, 220 children were identified as "at risk" for reading failure due to their performance on a screening measure of early literacy skills and randomly assigned to receive immediate or delayed intervention. The intervention consisted of eighteen 30-minute lessons delivered twice weekly for 9 weeks and focused on teaching critical emergent literacy skills within small groups. Hierarchical linear models were used to nest children wi

Early reading development in children at family risk for dyslexia.

In a 3-year longitudinal study, middle- to upper-middle-class preschool children at high family risk (HR group, N = 67) and low family risk (LR group, N = 57) for dyslexia (or reading disability, RD), were evaluated yearly from before kindergarten to the end of second grade. Both phonological processing and literacy skills were tested at each of four time points. Consistent with the well-known familiarity of RD, 34% of the HR group compared with 6% of the LR group became RD. Participants who became RD showed deficits in both implicit and explicit phonological processing skills at all four time

"Structured Scaffolding for Early Oral Reasoning: A Modern Team-Based Training Model for Radiology Residents".

RATIONALE: In 2023, the American Board of Radiology (ABR) announced the reinstatement of the oral certifying examination after more than a decade of exclusive reliance on a computer-based multiple-choice certifying examination. As residency programs adapt to this transition, educational approaches are needed to intentionally develop oral reasoning skills early in training. We developed a longitudinal, team-based educational framework that applies principles of cognitive scaffolding to early oral board skill development. METHODS: A prospective educational innovation was implemented over 12 mon

A report of behavioral data on three groups of patients with craniofacial disorders.

Longitudinal follow-up data on development and school placement are presented for three groups of patients. Having had or not having had early surgical intervention and stimulation distinguishes the two groups of patients with craniosynostosis. The third group is patients with cleft lip and palate who received early intervention but did not achieve minimal criteria for communication by age 22 months. Educational placement (for patients 8 to 20 years of age) follows the pattern of distribution of students nationally for patients who had early intervention.

The New Moms Project: educating mothers about sun protection in newborn nurseries.

Sun protection habits should begin early in life and be taught as part of routine preventive health care. Early teaching of parents aims to introduce an easily achieved means of sun protection with the goal of instilling these practices as habits in the parents and their young children. We developed a maternity nurse-led intervention for 187 mothers at newborn nurseries in Falmouth, Massachusetts, combining educational material and personal discussions. One year after the intervention we successfully contacted 73% of the mothers. Nearly 90% recalled the informational program and equal numbers

Evaluation of the Effect of a Promotora-led Educational Intervention on Cervical Cancer and Human Papillomavirus Knowledge Among Predominantly Hispanic Primary Care Patients on the US-Mexico Border.

Despite declining cervical cancer rates, ethnic minorities continue to bear an unequal burden in morbidity and mortality. While access to screening is a major barrier, low levels of knowledge and cultural influences have been found to play a part in underutilization of preventive services. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of a promontora-led educational intervention on cervical cancer and human papillomavirus knowledge in mainly Hispanic females attending a primary care clinic. One hundred ten females were recruited from the waiting room of a busy primary care clinic and invited

Teachers' Knowledge and Stigmatizing Attitudes Associated With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Effectiveness of a Brief Educational Intervention.

Because children and adolescents are vulnerable to developing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), classroom teachers play an important role in the early identification and intervention in students with OCD. The present study aims to explore the recognition of OCD, general knowledge about this disorder, implications in the classroom, and stigmatizing attitudes among teachers, as well as the effectiveness of a brief educational intervention about OCD. Participants (n = 95; mean age = 43. 29 years old; 64.3% female) were primary and secondary school teachers who were randomly assigned to an expe

Tuberous sclerosis: case study of early seizure control and subsequent normal development.

This case study presents the history of a child diagnosed with severe tuberous sclerosis (TS) with an original prognosis of severe to profound mental retardation. Infantile spasms and seizures were eventually controlled, and with educational and therapeutic intervention, this child progressed until she was functioning within normal limits by age 4. This paper presents the position that early diagnosis, early seizure control, and early multidisciplinary intervention are crucial in reducing the poor prognosis in such cases.

Executive functioning is linked to feeding practices and food insecurity in Head Start mothers.

Lower executive functioning is associated with more reactive, coercive general parenting practices. Parents who experience poverty, a chronic stressor, may have compromised executive functioning that impacts parenting practices, but less is known about the impact on parent feeding practices. This study examined associations between maternal executive functioning and feeding practices among families living in low-income contexts. Participants included 137 mothers of children enrolled in Head Start who completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version, Child Feeding Que
