Self and identity in social anxiety disorder.

Models of social anxiety (SA) place the self as an organizing and causal center involved in the maintenance of this condition. An integrative conceptual framework for the understanding of the self is used to review the literature on the self in SA. Two main distinctions are emphasized: the self-as-a-subject (I-self) versus self-as-an-object (Me-self), and the evolutionary-based distinction of social rank versus affiliation. We argue that (a) although much progress has been made in understanding the association between SA and Me-self, the association between SA and I-self remains largely unexpl

"Seeing Rain": Integrating phenomenological and Bayesian predictive coding approaches to visual hallucinations and self-disturbances (Ichstörungen) in schizophrenia.

We present a schizophrenia patient who reports "seeing rain" with attendant somatosensory features which separate him from his surroundings. Because visual/multimodal hallucinations are understudied in schizophrenia, we examine a case history to determine the role of these hallucinations in self-disturbances (Ichstörungen). Developed by the early Heidelberg School, self-disturbances comprise two components: 1. The self experiences its own automatic processing as alien to self in a split-off, "doubled-I." 2. In "I-paralysis," the disruption to automatic processing is now outside the self in omn

Varieties of Self Disorder: A Bio-Pheno-Social Model of Schizophrenia.

The self-disorder model offers a unifying way of conceptualizing schizophrenia's highly diverse symptoms (positive, negative, disorganized), of capturing their distinctive bizarreness, and of conceiving their longitudinal development. These symptoms are viewed as differing manifestations of an underlying disorder of ipseity or core-self: hyper-reflexivity/diminished-self-presence with accompanying disturbances of "grip" or "hold" on reality. Recent revision to this phenomenological theory, in particular distinguishing primary-vs-secondary factors, offers a bio-pheno-social model that is consis

Lonely minds in lonely bodies: Loneliness as insufficient psychological and neurophysiological self-other overlap.

Loneliness affects the health and wellbeing of a substantial proportion of the global population, posing a major public health concern. Loneliness, despite being an emotional state experienced within oneself, represents a sense of isolation from other individuals beyond the self. Most contemporary psychological research on emotion, especially in adults, takes an individualistic approach and is limited in accounting for "other" minds when studying the mind of a "self." On the other hand, studies of the neurophysiology of loneliness have mostly focused on presenting the biological correlates of

From Reified Identity to Relational Ipseity: Hermeneutic Phenomenology, Language Pragmatics, and Contemplative Practices of Self-Deconstruction.

This article presents a theoretical and conceptual analysis of self-deconstruction in contemporary contemplative and clinical practices. It argues that psychological suffering is not primarily related to the existence of the self as such, but to its ontological and linguistic reification as a fixed identity, corresponding to idem-identity and to what Heidegger described as an ontology of presence (Vorhandenheit). Drawing on hermeneutic phenomenology, the self is reconceptualized as ipseity (selfhood): a relational, temporal, and performative mode of being-in-the-world. From this perspective, s

Identity in bipolar disorder: Self-worth and achievement.

This article considers self and self-concept in bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder, defined on the basis of manic symptoms, is a highly debilitating psychopathology. It is heavily grounded in biology but symptom course is still very responsive to psychological and social forces in the lives of persons who have the disorder. This review assumes an overall view of the self that is typical of personality psychology: self as traits, self as goals and aspirations, and ongoing efforts to attain those goals. In this review, we will discuss two different facets of self and identity in bipolar disorder

Is comorbid Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorder responsible for a longer duration of untreated illness in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is marked by a pervasive preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control, often overlapping with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in terms of rigid and repetitive behaviors. While OCD behaviors are ego-dystonic and confined to specific areas of life, OCPD behaviors are ego-syntonic and affect overall functioning. Although the relationship between OCD and OCPD has been object of investigation, the impact of OCPD comorbidity on OCD remains underexplored. This study examines potential clinical differences between …

Analyzing forms of superego functioning as mentalizations.

The concept of mentalization seeks to understand the transformation processes of physical quantity into psychical quality through the emergence, development and organization of mental representations. Often discussed in relation to the functioning of both the id and the ego, it is here proposed that the degree of mentalization also determines the level of functioning and maturity of the hostile, self-punitive superego. Luquet's description of four layers of thought (primary mental representations, metaprimary thinking, metaconscious intuitive thinking, conscious verbal thought) serves as a gui…

The overstimulated state of dyslexia: perception, knowledge, and learning.

Dyslexia is far more than a learning disorder; it has significant impact on personality organization. While dyslexia usually begins to manifest most clearly in early latency when the challenge of learning to read is at its height, often the dyslexic child's ego development and functioning has already been adversely affected. The literature from neuropsychology suggests that dyslexia is a subtle language-processing disorder that affects emotional, cognitive, and social development. The neuroanatomical literature also suggests a significant correlation between the neurodevelopmental basis for dy…

Omnidirectional Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation in Virtual Reality.

In this paper we propose omnidirectional galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) to mitigate cybersickness in virtual reality applications. One of the most accepted theories indicates that Cybersickness is caused by the visually induced impression of ego motion while physically remaining at rest. As a result of this sensory mismatch, people associate negative symptoms with VR and sometimes avoid the technology altogether. To reconcile the two contradicting sensory perceptions, we investigate GVS to stimulate the vestibular canals behind our ears with low-current electrical signals that are speci…

Pointing with the left and right hands in congenitally blind children.

Congenitally blind and blindfolded sighted children at ages of 6, 8, 10 and 12 years performed a pointing task with their left and right index fingers at an array of three targets on a touch screen to immediate (0 s) and delayed (4 s) instructions. Accuracy was greater for immediate than delayed pointing and there was an effect of delay for the orientation of the main axis of the pointing distribution in both groups, indicating distinct spatial representations with development such as ego- and allocentric frames of reference, respectively. The pointing responses of the blind covered less surfa…

'Never twice without thrice'. An outline for the understanding of traumatic neurosis.

Following the review of Freud's work on trauma (1916-17, 1920, 1926, 1933, 1939), this article proposes to view the traumatic scene as a screen which acts as an active process in the case of many victims who, like Mrs D, break down a few days after being assaulted. After a first attempt at denial, the ego is submerged with repressed content. Repetition is seen as a means of abreacting the trauma by seeking to bind the enormous quantity of excitations that cannot find discharge. Repetition, because of its compulsive quality, fails. The victim remains in a state of helplessness against which she…
