Conversion of Elbow Arthrodesis to Total Elbow Arthroplasty: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Elbow arthrodesis is a salvage operation designed to relieve pain and enable weight bearing in young patients with painful arthritic joints who have failed all other treatment modalities. Unfortunately, elbow arthrodesis is poorly tolerated by many patients because there is no fusion position that accommodates all activities of daily living. As indications for elbow arthroplasty expand and implant design improves, patients living with elbow arthrodesis may seek conversion to arthroplasty to regain a functional range of motion. Only one case of elbow arthrodesis to elbow arthroplasty conversion

The Use of Elbow Arthroscopy for Management of the Pediatric Elbow: A Systematic Review of Indications and Outcomes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review was to systematically examine the literature surrounding elbow arthroscopy for pediatric patients and to assess indications, functional outcomes, and complication rates. METHODS: This systematic review was carried out in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. EMBASE, PubMed, and MEDLINE were searched for relevant literature from inception until December 2019, and studies were screened by 2 reviewers independently and in duplicate for those investigating elbow arthroscopy in a pediatric population (<18 years). Editorials, review articles, and case reports were e

Radiographic changes at the elbow in primary osteoarthritis: a comparison with normal aging of the elbow joint.

A retrospective case-control study was undertaken to evaluate the pathologic radiographic changes that occur in primary osteoarthritis of the elbow. The radiographs of 50 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the elbow were compared with an age- and sex-matched control group to distinguish those features specific to elbow osteoarthritis from those occurring as a result of normal aging. We assessed 100 radiographs (50 anteroposterior and 50 lateral views) in both the study and control groups for 10 radiographic features. In the osteoarthritic group, osteophytes of the olecranon (96%), coronoi

Management of the floating elbow injury in children. Simultaneous ipsilateral fractures of the elbow and forearm.

Simultaneous ipsilateral fracture of the elbow and forearm--floating elbow--is an uncommon injury. During a 7-year period we prospectively followed 12 children who presented with completely displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus associated with a forearm fracture of the same limb. All patients underwent emergency operative reduction and percutaneous K-wire stabilisation. At a minimum of 18 months, all patients were assessed clinically and radiologically and the results evaluated according to a conventional scoring system. Ten patients had good or excellent outcomes, and there were tw

Fitting of electronic elbow on an elbow disarticulated patient by means of a new surgical technique.

Rehabilitation of trans-humeral amputees represents a challenge. One of the difficulties to overcome is prosthetic suspension. In the case of elbow disarticulation the presence of humeral condyles permits better suspension, but there is no room for elbow joints, particularly electronic ones, and the only available mechanisms are provided by external hinges. The purpose of this report is to present a case of a primarily elbow disarticulated patient, with indication for surgical revision due to bad skin coverage, neuroma and the wish to improve prosthetic fitting. The surgical plan outlined was

Results of total elbow arthroplasty as a salvage procedure for failed elbow reconstructive operations.

Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) was used as a salvage procedure following failed open reduction and internation fixation, failed triaxial arthroplasties, and septic and aseptic loosening of implant arthroplasty. A minimally constrained bicondylar implant with a block to disarticulation was substituted for the reconstruction of 20 revision TEAs. Custom-designed implant TEA was substituted in cases with substantial bony or soft tissue loss. Revision of the polyethylene-bearing component, coupled with the addition of a yolk-type locking mechanism, was implanted when only the bearing system of a we

Hand therapy following elbow release for passive elbow flexion and long head of the triceps transfer for active elbow flexion in children with amyoplasia.

Children born with the Amyoplasia form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) who lack elbow flexor muscles and have elbow extension contractures usually require assistance in performing ADL's that require reaching their hand to their face, head, and upper body. For tasks involving the UE, the elbow is the key to functional independence. Children born with Amyoplasia may benefit from selective surgeries to enhance functional independence and improve quality of life. Home therapy and splinting following these surgeries is an important part of gaining motion and improving function. This abs

Olecranon medial flip osteotomy for total elbow arthroplasty : Triceps-preserving approach to the elbow.

OBJECTIVE: The olecranon medial flip osteotomy offers adequate exposure to the posterior elbow, while preserving the continuity of the triceps extensor complex and sparing the innervation of the anconeus muscle. It avoids soft-tissue injury due to strain and aids in protecting the ulnar nerve by medially reflecting the long head of triceps. INDICATIONS: This surgical approach allows the exposure required for total elbow arthroplasty and concomitant radial head excision. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients who underwent previous surgical procedures to the triceps tendon insertion. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Potential Reinforcement of Health Misconceptions in YouTube Videos: Example of Elbow Enthesopathy (Tennis Elbow).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the prevalence of potential reinforcement of common unhealthy misinterpretations of bodily sensations in social media (YouTube videos) addressing elbow enthesopathy (eECRB, enthesopathy of the extensor carpi radialis brevis, tennis elbow). METHODS: We recorded video metric data on 139 unique YouTube videos when searching "lateral epicondylitis" and "tennis elbow." We designed a rubric to assess the level of potential reinforcement of unhelpful thinking in videos about eECRB. Informational quality was scored with an adapted version of the DISCERN instrum

Editorial Commentary: Elbow Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) Surgery Works, but Is Not Often Indicated.

In the small percentage of patients who do not respond to nonoperative approaches to tennis elbow, surgery-whether it is open, arthroscopic, or percutaneous-provides near 90% satisfaction rates.

Does Contralateral Elbow Radiography Improve Diagnostic Accuracy of Paediatric Elbow Fractures amongst Emergency Residents?

Background: Paediatric elbow fractures are difficult to diagnose because secondary ossification centres can obscure radiographic interpretation. Emergency physicians often request contralateral elbow radiographs to improve diagnostic accuracy, although the benefit of this practice remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of contralateral elbow radiographs and a targeted educational intervention on the diagnostic accuracy of emergency residents interpreting paediatric elbow fractures. Methods: This diagnostic study included 28 emergency residents at a tertiary hospital. Pa

Inter- and Intraobserver Reliability of CT Assessment of Canine Elbow Sclerosis in the Absence of Elbow Pathology.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a highly standardized elbow computed tomography (CT) examination protocol and evaluate inter- and intraobserver reliability of assessment of canine elbow sclerosis in the absence of elbow pathology. STUDY DESIGN: Dogs that presented for CT screening for elbow dysplasia prior to breeding were evaluated. Only dogs diagnosed with CT as being free of elbow dysplasia were included. The CT images were randomized and assessed by five blinded observers. Two observers re-reviewed 30 randomly selected studies on a second occasion. A standardized approach to CT image reconstructi

[Semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty for severe post traumatic ankylosis of the elbow: a case-report].

Post traumatic stiffness in young subjects has been long considered a bad indication for total elbow arthroplasty. We present the case of a 48 year old woman with an elbow fracture, operated in childhood who developed progressive painful stiffness. After treatment with a cemented semi constrained Coonrad-Morrey total arthroplasty, we have obtained a good result at over 4 years follow-up. The gain of ROM is 40 degrees, the analogue scale for pain is 2.5/10 and the Mayo Clinic Performance Index for the Elbow is 80/100. The subjective impression is excellent and there were no complications.

Ipsilateral Shoulder and Elbow Dislocation.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dislocations and elbow dislocations are common presentations to the emergency department (ED). Simultaneous ipsilateral elbow and shoulder dislocations are rarely reported and typically occur secondary to trauma. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old female presented to the ED after a fall from standing and complained of upper right extremity pain. Radiographs revealed posterior dislocation of the right elbow and anterior dislocation of the right shoulder without fractures. Successful reduction of the elbow and shoulder were both achieved, and the patient was placed in a long-arm sp

Management of Geriatric Elbow Injury.

Approximately 4.1% of all fractures in the elderly involve the elbow. Most elbow injuries in geriatric patients occur as the result of low-energy mechanisms such as falls from standing height. Elbow injuries in elderly patients present complex challenges because of insufficient bone quality, comminution, articular fragmentation, and preexisting conditions, such as arthritis. Medical comorbidities and baseline level of function must be heavily considered in surgical decision making.

Elbow arthroscopy - Indications and technique.

Throughout the years, elbow arthroscopy has advanced tremendously due to improvements in technology and surgical techniques. It is now considered a safe and effective treatment for a variety of elbow disorders. Due to the small working space and nearby neurovascular structures, it is a technically challenging procedure. It can be used to successfully treat complaints caused by loose bodies, osteoarthritis, arthrofibrosis, OCD, lateral epicondylitis, VEOS and fractures. The most devastating complication of elbow arthroscopy is (permanent) nerve injury. Therefore, distortion of the anatomy of th
