Supracondylar humerus fractures are associated with neurological complications. This report describes a child who suffered from persistent myoclonus-like movements of the elbow and wrist as a consequence of a previous displaced fracture. Symptoms were progressive. Seven years later, sensation was decreased in the ulnar nerve distribution. Palpation of the ulnar nerve exacerbated the myoclonic jerks. As symptoms progressed, electoneuromyography became abnormal. Cubital tunnel release and anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve were required to reach full recovery. Long-term outcome was excell

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effectiveness of reduction and fixation by the improved elbow anteromedial approach in treatment of ulna coronoid process fracture.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2014, 13 patients with the ulna coronoid process fracture were treated with reduction and fixation by the improved elbow anteromedial approach. There were 10 males and 3 females with an average age of 37.2 years (range, 18-57 years). Five cases were caused by traffic accident, 7 cases by falling injury from height, and 1 case by object impact injury. Seven cases were the terrible triad of the el

INTRODUCTION: Nonunion following surgical stabilization of humeral shaft fractures, although infrequent, remains a challenge as limited surgical options are available. The difficulties in re-fixation are due to osteolysis produced by the loose implant components and disuse osteopenia of the entire bone segment. We share our experience in the management of a long standing diaphyseal nonunion of humerus following titanium LCP fixation.
CASE REPORT: A 58 years old woman presented with 20 months old nonunion following titanium LCP fixation of her closed humeral shaft fracture, done elsewhere. The

Terrible triad elbow injuries, consisting of fractures of the radial head and coronoid with ulnohumeral dislocation, are challenging to treat. They require a comprehensive understanding of the complex anatomy of the elbow to effectively treat all of the pathology and create a stable, congruent joint. The authors present a case of a terrible triad injury with avulsion of the triceps and flexor-pronator mass after a low-energy fall in a young patient. Although most terrible triad fracture-dislocations can be successfully treated with coronoid fixation, radial head fixation or replacement, and re

PURPOSE: While performing CT examinations of the elbow, we frequently observed a previously undescribed fracture fragment of the supinator crest of the ulna. According to the anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex, this fracture might be an avulsion fracture of the annular ligament and/or the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The aim of this study was to further characterize these fragments and document their associated injuries.
METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of CT scans of the elbow was performed. Conventional X-ray and CT diagnoses were used to systematically document any a

The objective of this paper is to report clinical and radiographic long-term results of a neglected fracture of the medial humeral epicondyle, which was entrapped into the elbow joint. At follow-up, 48 years after the trauma, the patient complained of occasional discomfort around the elbow, but the joint had a normal range of motion and good stability. Radiographs showed that the epicondylar fragment was fused to the medial border of the olecranon. The authors conclude that an old fracture of the medial humeral epicondyle, presenting a fusion of the fragment to the olecranon with normal range

Report of an exceptional case of spontaneous ankylosis of both elbows, without any family history, trauma, infection or rheumatological disease. An incomplete form of a congenital known syndrome or a thermal reflex sympathetic dystrophy were the most plausible etiologies. The traumatic fractures of both radio-ulnohumeral synostoses have been treated conservatively, within a five years interval period. The arthrodesis of both elbows at 35 and 80 degree of flexion did not impinge on the life autonomy and the work ability of the patient.

Supracondylar humerus fractures are the most common elbow injury in children. Stable fractures can be closed, reduced, and casted, whereas unstable fractures require percutaneous pinning. Studies have shown that there is a biomechanical advantage of crossed pin fixation as opposed to two lateral pin fixation. However, medial pin placement has the risk of injuring the ulnar nerve. This modification of technique was used on 46 patients, aged 12 months to 14 years (median age, 3.6 years). Two patients had an ulnar sensory and motor neurapraxia, and two patients had cubitus varus deformities posto

We describe a case of a 6-year-old girl with a posterolateral elbow dislocation and a concomitant fracture of the lateral humeral condyle. After reduction of the dislocation, the fracture was diagnosed and treated by open reduction and fixation, with a good functional result. In doubtful cases, oblique, heterolateral, and varus stress films, or even arthrography may be necessary.

We describe two patients with an Essex-Lopresti fracture dislocation in association with a dislocation of the elbow. This combination of injuries has not been previously reported. The Essex-Lopresti fracture is a rare injury, and the associated distal radioulnar dislocation is often missed. Meticulous radiographic evaluation of the wrist, including dynamic stress radiographs of the forearm, can lead to an earlier diagnosis and improved care of these patients.

INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study were to determine (1) whether delay to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) after traumatic distal humerus fracture affects heterotopic ossification (HO) formation and (2) whether HO is associated with postoperative elbow range of motion (ROM).
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with distal humerus fractures who underwent TEA at a single institution by a single orthopaedic surgeon from 2017 to 2021. All procedures were performed using a triceps fascial tongue approach. Patients did not receive HO prophylaxis and followed a standardize

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ipsilateral proximal and distal radius fractures without elbow dislocation are extremely rare injuries and a few cases have been reported. Currently, there is no well-established consensus regarding their optimal management.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 57-year-old woman who had a right bipolar radius fracture after falling from a standing height. The radiological investigation showed a comminuted distal radius fracture and a fracture of the radial head without elbow dislocation. The patient underwent surgical treatment and followed a rehabilitation

BACKGROUND: The Boyd approach is a single-incision posterior approach to the proximal radius and ulna based on a lateral anconeus muscle reflection and release of the lateral collateral ligamentous complex. This approach remains a lesser-used technique following early reports of proximal radioulnar synostosis and postoperative elbow instability. Although limited by small case series, recent literature does not support these early reported complications. This study presents a single surgeon's outcomes using the Boyd approach for the treatment of simple to complex elbow injuries.
METHODS: Follo

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare surgical treatment outcomes of pediatric medial epicondyle fractures with and without elbow dislocation.
METHODS: A total of 139 patients (75 boys and 64 girls; mean ± SD age, 9.6 ± 3.3 years) who received surgical treatment for medial epicondyle fractures at the Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from January 2012 to December 2018 were included in our study. There were 99 cases that had a medial epicondyle fracture alone (group A) and 40 cases had a concomitant elbow dislocation (group B). Pain, ulnar nerve palsy, and stability of

Simultaneous ipsilateral fractures involving radial head and distal end of radius are uncommon. We present our thoughts on which fracture should be addressed first. A 68-year-old lady sustained an ipsilateral fracture of the right radial head and distal end of radius following a fall. Clinically her right elbow was posteriorly dislocated and right wrist was deformed. Plain radiographs showed an intraarticular fracture of the distal end of radius and a comminution radial head fracture with a proximally migrated radius. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed no significant ligament injuries. We

BACKGROUND: Long-term functional outcomes of supracondylar elbow fractures (SCEF) have not been well documented in the literature. We retrospectively evaluated functional outcomes of pediatric SCEF using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of patients who presented to our tertiary care pediatric emergency department with SCEF between January 2005 and December 2009. We reviewed their charts to assess several clinical parameters, including age, sex, Gartland classification of SCEF, weight, comorbidities, treatmen

We report the occurrence of a rare injury in a teenager not yet described in the literature: the association of posteromedial elbow dislocation, lateral condyle and coronoid process fractures. The treatment required fixation of lateral condyle and coronoid process thanks to lateral and medial approaches and capsular fixation. This lesion is unstable, such as the terrible triad described in adults. It requires external and anterior stabilization of the elbow. The management of such injuries of the elbow is complex. It must consider both bone and ligament instability, and risk of injury to growt
