Electroencephalography Signatures Associated with Developmental Dyslexia Identified Using Principal Component Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Developmental dyslexia is characterised by neuropsychological processing deficits and marked hemispheric functional asymmetries. To uncover latent neurophysiological features linked to reading impairment, we applied dimensionality reduction and clustering techniques to high-density electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. We further examined the functional relevance of these features to reading performance under standardised test conditions. Methods: EEG data were collected from 200 children (100 with dyslexia and 100 age- and IQ-matched typically developing controls).

Long-term outcome prediction after pediatric cardiac arrest by continuous electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) features after cardiac arrest (CA) are associated with short-term outcome predictions. However, the association between cEEG features and long-term neurobehavioral outcomes in children remains unclear. This study aimed to identify cEEG features that can accurately predict neurobehavioral outcomes in children 6 months after CA. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, observational study was performed at the tertiary care pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of a national children's hospital. This study included a consecutive cohort of childr…

Tripolar concentric ring electrodes for capturing localised electroencephalography signals during sleep.

By design, tripolar concentric ring electrodes (TCRE) provide more focal brain activity signals than conventional electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes placed further apart. This study compared spectral characteristics and rates of data loss to noisy epochs with TCRE versus conventional EEG signals recorded during sleep. A total of 20 healthy sleepers (12 females; mean [standard deviation] age 27.8 [9.6] years) underwent a 9-h sleep study. Participants were set up for polysomnography recording with TCRE to assess brain activity from 18 sites and conventional electrodes for EEG, eyes, and mus…

State-related Electroencephalography Microstate Complexity during Propofol- and Esketamine-induced Unconsciousness.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the state-related "neural correlates of consciousness" for anesthetics-induced unconsciousness is challenging. Spatiotemporal complexity is a promising tool for investigating consciousness. The authors hypothesized that spatiotemporal complexity may serve as a state-related but not drug-related electroencephalography (EEG) indicator during an unconscious state induced by different anesthetic drugs (e.g., propofol and esketamine). METHODS: The authors recorded EEG from patients with unconsciousness induced by propofol (n = 10) and esketamine (n = 10). Both conventional …

Seizure onset patterns predict outcome after stereo-electroencephalography-guided laser amygdalohippocampotomy.

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampotomy (SLAH) is an appealing option for patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, who often require intracranial monitoring to confirm mesial temporal seizure onset. However, given limited spatial sampling, it is possible that stereotactic electroencephalography (stereo-EEG) may miss seizure onset elsewhere. We hypothesized that stereo-EEG seizure onset patterns (SOPs) may differentiate between primary onset and secondary spread and predict postoperative seizure control. In this study, we characterized the 2-year outcomes of patients who underwent sin…

Pinniped electroencephalography: Methodology and findings in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

This study was designed to identify abnormalities in the electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded from stranded California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) with suspected domoic acid (DA) toxicosis. Recordings from animals presenting for non-neurological issues were also obtained to better understand the normal EEG (background activity and transient events) in this species, as, to date, studies have focused on examining natural sleep in pinnipeds. Most animals were sedated for electrode placement and EEG acquisition with some receiving antiepileptic medications or isoflurane during the procedur

Machine learning polysomnographically-derived electroencephalography biomarkers predictive of epworth sleepiness scale.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) causes difficulty in concentrating and continuous fatigue during the day. In the clinical setting, the assessment and diagnosis of EDS rely mostly on subjective questionnaires and verbal reports, which compromises the reliability of clinical diagnosis and the ability to robustly discern candidacy for available therapies and track treatment response. In this study, we used a computational pipeline for the automated, rapid, high-throughput, and objective analysis of previously collected encephalography (EEG) data to identify surrogate biomarkers for EDS, thereb

Predicting posttraumatic epilepsy using admission electroencephalography after severe traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) develops in as many as one third of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, often years after injury. Analysis of early electroencephalographic (EEG) features, by both standardized visual interpretation (viEEG) and quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis, may aid early identification of patients at high risk for PTE. METHODS: We performed a case-control study using a prospective database of severe TBI patients treated at a single center from 2011 to 2018. We identified patients who survived 2 years postinjury and matched patients with PTE to those withou

Exploring neurophysiological correlates of visually induced motion sickness using electroencephalography (EEG).

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a common phenomenon when using visual devices such as smartphones and virtual reality applications, with symptoms including nausea, fatigue, and headache. To date, the neuro-cognitive processes underlying VIMS are not fully understood. Previous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) delivered mixed findings, with some reporting an increase in delta and theta power, and others reporting increases in alpha and beta frequencies. The goal of the study was to gain further insight into EEG correlates for VIMS. Participants viewed a VIMS-inducing visual …

Upper Limb Movement Execution Classification using Electroencephalography for Brain Computer Interface.

An accurate classification of upper limb movements using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is gaining significant importance in recent years due to the prevalence of brain-computer interfaces. The upper limbs in the human body are crucial since different skeletal segments combine to make a range of motions that helps us in our trivial daily tasks. Decoding EEG-based upper limb movements can be of great help to people with spinal cord injury (SCI) or other neuro-muscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis, and periodic paralysis. This can manifest i

Multiscale depth of anaesthesia prediction for surgery using frontal cortex electroencephalography.

Hypnotic and sedative anaesthetic agents are employed during multiple medical interventions to prevent patient awareness. Careful titration of agent dosing is required to avoid negative side effects; the accuracy thereof may be improved by Depth of Anaesthesia Monitoring. This work investigates the potential of a patient specific depth monitoring prediction using electroencephalography recorded neural oscillation from the frontal lobe of 10 patients during sedation, where a comparison of the prediction accuracy was made across five different approaches to post-processing; Noise Assisted-Empiri…

Electroencephalography Study of Frontal Lobe Evoked by Dynamic Random-Dot Stereogram.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cortical electrical activity and electroencephalography (EEG) features of the frontal lobe evoked by dynamic random dot stereogram (DRDS) and to probe the functional connectivity (FC) between the frontal lobe and occipital lobe when processing 3D perception based on the binocular disparity. METHODS: The EEG experiment involved 14 healthy adults with normal stereopsis (<60″) and normal corrected visual acuity (20/20). The Neuroscan system and 32-channel EEG cap were used to record EEG signals based on the DRDS stimuli. The maximum energ…

Functional neuropathology of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia by single-mouse longitudinal electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) results in symptomatic seizures and long-term neurodevelopmental disability. The Rice-Vannucci model of rodent neonatal HI has been used extensively to examine and translate the functional consequences of acute and chronic HI-induced encephalopathy. Yet, longitudinal electrophysiological characterization of this brain injury model has been limited by the size of the neonatal mouse's head and postnatal maternal dependency. We overcome this challenge by employing a novel method of longitudinal single-mouse electroencephalography (EEG) using chro…

A Routine Electroencephalography Monitoring System for Automated Sports-Related Concussion Detection.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cases of concussions in the United States keep increasing and are now up to 2 million to 3 million incidents per year. Although concussions are recoverable and usually not life-threatening, the degree and rate of recovery may vary depending on age, severity of the injury, and past concussion history. A subsequent concussion before full recovery may lead to more-severe brain damage and poorer outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings can identify brain dysfunctionality and abnormalities, such as after a concussion. Routine EEG monitoring can be a convenient method for reducing unreporte…

Brainwaves beyond diagnosis: Wider applications of electroencephalography in idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has long been used as a versatile and noninvasive diagnostic tool in epilepsy. With the advent of digital EEG, more advanced applications of EEG have emerged. Compared with technologically advanced practice in focal epilepsies, the utilization of EEG in idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) has been lagging, often restricted to a simple diagnostic tool. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of broader applications of EEG beyond this narrow scope, discussing how the current clinical and research applications of EEG may potentially be extended to IGE. The …

Sensitivity of Continuous Electroencephalography to Detect Ictal Activity After Cardiac Arrest.

IMPORTANCE: Epileptiform electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns are common after resuscitation from cardiac arrest, are associated with patient outcome, and may require treatment. It is unknown whether continuous EEG monitoring is needed to detect these patterns or if brief intermittent monitoring is sufficient. If continuous monitoring is required, the necessary duration of observation is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the time-dependent sensitivity of continuous EEG for epileptiform event detection, and to compare continuous EEG to several alternative EEG-monitoring strategies for post-car

Electroencephalography During Nociceptive Stimulation in Chronic Pain Patients: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: With its high temporal resolution, electroencephalography (EEG), a technique that records electrical activity of cortical neuronal cells, is a potentially suitable technique to investigate human somatosensory processing. By using EEG, the processing of (nociceptive) stimuli can be investigated, along with the functionality of the nociceptive pathway. Therefore, it can be applied in chronic pain patients to objectify whether changes have occurred in nociceptive processing. Typically, so-called event-related potential (ERP) recordings are used, where EEG signals are recorded in respo…

Seizure incidence in the acute postneurosurgical period diagnosed using continuous electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Delay in diagnosis and subsequent treatment of nonconvulsive seizures can lead to worsened outcomes. The gold standard in detecting nonconvulsive seizures is continuous video-electroencephalography (cEEG). Compared to routine, 30-minute EEG, the use of cEEG increases the likelihood of capturing intermittent nonconvulsive seizures. Studies of critically ill patients in intensive care units demonstrate a particularly high rate of nonconvulsive seizures. Some of these studies included postneurosurgical patients, but often subanalyses of specific populations were not done. In particular…

Causal Dynamics of Scalp Electroencephalography Oscillation During the Rubber Hand Illusion.

Rubber hand illusion (RHI) is an important phenomenon for the investigation of body ownership and self/other distinction. The illusion is promoted by the spatial and temporal contingencies of visual inputs near a fake hand and physical touches to the real hand. The neural basis of this phenomenon is not fully understood. We hypothesized that the RHI is associated with a fronto-parietal circuit, and the goal of this study was to determine the dynamics of neural oscillation associated with this phenomenon. We measured electroencephalography while delivering spatially congruent/incongruent visuo-…

Combined transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography: its past, present and future.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used to index several neurophysiological processes including excitability, inhibition and plasticity. However, these measures are conventionally limited to the motor cortex and recorded from peripheral muscles. This represents a significant limitation when non-motor neurophysiological processes are of primary interest. In the last several years, TMS has been combined with electroencephalography (EEG) to derive such measures directly from the cortex. Initial studies demonstrated that meaningful recordings could be derived without being substantially af…
