A novel variant of endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) was described among individuals in an area surrounding El Bagre, Colombia, South America. In a series of 98 consecutive eyeballs enucleated at postmortem from 86 patients dying with AIDS, the incidence of calcium deposits was 14 and 18.6%, respectively, for oxalates and calcium hydroxyapatite. In an attempt to characterize ion transport mechanisms in the uterine epithelium the effect of diuretics on the elemental composition of the uterine secretion was investigated by X-ray microanalysis. Maternal and cord serum calcium, copper, iron and zinc concentrations were analyzed in 20 women with a postdate pregnancy. The control group consisted of 20 parturients with delivery at term and their newborns. Serum free estriol (E3) was also determined. Maternal serum copper, zinc and E3 were statistically significantly lower, while cord serum copper and fetomaternal ratio of zinc were significantly higher in the study group than in the control group. Further, a positive correlation between E3 and maternal serum copper level (r = 0.63) was found.

Energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis was used to analyze mitochondrial and lysosomal iron-containing deposits in sideroblastic anemia. Although it has been previously known that these deposits contain iron by inference from Prussian blue staining, the possible presence of other cations as well as the nature of the anions present has not been identified.
