A double-blind crossover trial involving a control diet and a diet eliminating artificial flavors, colors, and natural salicylates as recommended by Feingold was conducted on 15 hyperkinetic children. Teachers and parents observed the children for one month prior to treatment, using standardized rating scales. Both parents and teachers reported fewer hyperkinetic symptoms on the K-P diet as compared to the pretreatment baseline. The teachers noted a highly significant reduction of symptoms on the K-P diet as compared to the control diet but the parents did not. The control diet ratings did not

Nonceliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is the clinical term used to describe gastrointestinal (GI) and/or extraintestinal symptoms associated with gluten ingestion. The prevalence of NCGS is unknown. The condition has clinical features that overlap with those of celiac disease (CD) and wheat allergy (WA). The pathophysiologic process in NCGS is thought to be through an innate immune mechanism, whereas CD and WA are autoimmune- and allergen-mediated, respectively. However, dietary triggers other than gluten, such as the fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols, hav

Gluten sensitivity can manifest with a spectrum of neurological dysfunction including ataxia, encephalopathy and neuropathy with or without associated coeliac disease (CD). Gluten sensitivity can also present with central nervous system (CNS) hyperexcitability and cortical myoclonus which is often accompanied with refractory CD. CNS hyperexcitability can also be associated with Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) antibodies or much less commonly with Glycine Receptor Antibodies (GlyR-Abs) but the direct pathogenic roles of these antibodies remain debatable. We have previously reported a link bet

OBJECTIVES: Hypercholesterolaemia is a major risk factor for developing atherosclerosis. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables is recommended to hypercholesterolaemic patients. In this study, the hypocholesterolaemic effect of apigenin and luteolin was evaluated in a hamster model.
METHODS: Hamsters were put on a high-cholesterol diet for 9 weeks, and apigenin or luteolin was administered in the diet at 60 and 300 ppm.
KEY FINDINGS: Both apigenin and luteolin supplementations could attenuate the aorta plaque formation by 30% and 20%, respectively. Apigenin-fed hamsters at both dosag

Allergen-free diets are a specific and effective anti-inflammatory therapy for eosinophilic esophagitis. They should be carried out by a multidisciplinary team to reduce side effects and improve adherence. According to recent guidelines and expert opinions, empirical diets with a reduced number of eliminated food categories and a step-up approach are the most encouraged strategy to reduce the number of endoscopies to identify food trigger(s) and maximize clinical results and adherence. Despite the fact that allergy testing-based diets are not recommended at a population level, geographical sen

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic evidence has suggested that diets with a high ratio of palmitic acid (PA) to oleic acid (OA) increase risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
OBJECTIVE: To gain additional insights into the relative effect of dietary fatty acids and their metabolism on CVD risk, we sought to identify a metabolomic signature that tracks with diet-induced changes in blood lipid concentrations and whole-body fat oxidation.
DESIGN: We applied comprehensive metabolomic profiling tools to biological specimens collected from 18 healthy adults enrolled in a crossover trial that compared a 3-w

The aim of this study was to investigate liver function tests and their association with clinical characteristics in children diagnosed with non-IgE-mediated food allergy. A total of 132 children with non-IgE-mediated food allergies and 127 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were retrospectively analyzed. Patient demographics, clinical features and response to treatment were analyzed. Serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were measured in both groups. The mean age of the patients was 6.0 ± 3.2 months, and symptoms appeared on average at 4.0 ± 3.4 months.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disorder that is driven by the gutbrain axis and affects 1-20% of the population. Most patients note that various foods elicit abdominal symptoms, and they eliminate these products from their diets. A diet that is low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) is currently one of the mainstays in IBS treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of IBS patients about the disease, treatment and the principles of the low-FODMAP diet that can alleviat

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic condition affecting the esophagus and driven by food antigens. Many individuals diagnosed with EoE have other allergic conditions, such as food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. The clinical goals of therapy in EoE include symptomatic, histologic, and endoscopic remission. The current paradigm for the treatment of EoE in Spain includes proton pump inhibitors, swallowed topical corticosteroids, and food elimination diets. These treatments have proven very effective in clinical studies. In April 2024, the Spanish Agenc…

The Antarctic is particularly sensitive to mercury (Hg) pollution and even low levels of Hg may cause significant damage in this fragile environment. The aim of this study was to investigate routes of mercury and methylmercury (MeHg) elimination by animals inhabiting the maritime Antarctic. The results showed that organisms at the highest trophic level (elephant seal) have the highest concentrations of THg and MeHg in both excrement and fur samples. Interspecies differences in mercury levels were observed in materials sourced from penguins of the genus Pysgocelis.13C and 15N values confirmed d

The scientific basis and the clinical application of mAb therapies that target specific immunologic pathways for eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases are areas of active interest. There is a growing recognition of a subset of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis whose disease does not respond well to topical steroids or elimination diets. In addition, long-term use of corticosteroids presents possible risks that are currently being evaluated. Systemic therapy with a biologic agent offers potential advantages as a global approach that could limit the need for multiple, locally active medica…

The prevalence of food allergy and anaphylaxis in children is reported to be increasing in recent years. Evidence suggests that exposure to … n may favour a specific tolerance induction. We hypothesize that widespread and uncontrolled use of elimination diets for atopic dermatitis may have played a role in the increase of allergy and anaphylaxis. Specific oral tolerance induction may be a possible therapeutic strategy. The article review food allergies caused by exclusion diet and also discuss recent pat …

Several recent epidemiologic and experimental studies have suggested that decreased calcium and vitamin D intake and high dietary fat are associated with mammary gland carcinogenesis. Complete reduction or elimination of human exposure to environmental factors such as high-fat diets is inherently difficult to implement. Recent studies have begun to evaluate a possible role for increased dietary calcium and vitamin D in reducing the risk of colonic and mammary cancers, even in the presence of a high-fat diet. Studies from our laboratory recently found that decreased dietary calcium and vitamin

Food allergy testing is frequently requested in atopic dermatitis (AD), yet international guidance appears inconsistent. We performed a stru … nut screening but agrees on timely introduction. The 2023 Joint Task Force recommendation addresses elimination diets as treatment, not a diagnostic threshold. Positive skin prick testing or food-specific IgE indicates sensitization, not clinical allergy; automatic elimination may cause nutritional harm and loss of oral tolerance. The effects of protein intake on the levels of total and holo-ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) in colon and liver have been examined in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed varying amounts of casein in a defined purified diet. Pair-feeding was used to eliminate effects of food intake per se. In the colon, both total and holo-ODC activity increased in animals fed a low-protein diet (1% casein). In the liver, on the other hand, both total and holo-ODC activity decreased with protein deprivation. The observed changes in both colon and liver appeared to be maximal within several days after institution of the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the gut plays a key role in the homeostasis of fluid and electrolyte balance and the production and disposal of uremic toxins. This review summarizes the current evidence on the gut-targeted interventions to control uremia, fluid overload, hyperkalemia and hyperphosphatemia in CKD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have emerged that support the concept of intestinal dialysis, such as colonic perfusion with a Malone antegrade continence enema stoma or colonic irrigation with a rectal catheter, as a promising adjuvant approach to control
