BACKGROUND: Patient decision aids facilitate treatment decisions. They are often evaluated in terms of their effect on decisional conflict, as measured by the Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS). It is unclear to what extent lower DCS scores are accompanied by observable patient behavior or emotions.
OBJECTIVE: To help interpret DCS scores.
DESIGN: In a Dutch university hospital, statements on behaviors or emotions during decision making were collected from asymptomatic aneurysm patients and healthy employees. Subsequently, they rated the intensity of decisional conflict that each statement expr…

Patients with Huntington's Disease (HD) are impaired in the recognition of emotional signals. However, the nature and extent of the impairment is controversial: it has variously been argued to disproportionately affect disgust (e.g., Sprengelmeyer et al., 1996), to be general for negative emotions (Snowden et al., 2008), or to be a consequence of item difficulty (Milders et al., 2003). Yet no study to date has included more than one positive stimulus category in emotion recognition tasks, and most studies have focused on the recognition of emotions from facial stimuli. In this study, we test t…

This study examined the role of emotions as predictors of children's coping responses to peer rejection experiences. Children ages 7-12 (N = 79) completed questionnaires to assess emotional and coping responses to peer rejection scenarios. This study examined three coping factors specific to peer rejection (positive reappraisal, ruminative coping, and aggressive coping) and examined results separately for two negative peer experiences (teasing and exclusion). Children's emotions predicted coping responses after controlling for peer experiences. Specifically, anger was associated with aggressiv…

Asperger's syndrome (AS) belongs to the group of autism spectrum disorders and is characterized by deficits in social interaction, as manifested e.g. by the lack of social or emotional reciprocity. The disturbance causes clinically significant impairment in social interaction. Abnormal prosody has been frequently identified as a core feature of AS. There are virtually no studies on recognition of basic emotions from speech. This study focuses on how adolescents with AS (n=12) and their typically developed controls (n=15) recognize the basic emotions happy, sad, angry, and 'neutral' from speech…

The current study examined gender differences in personal and psychological characteristics among drug-abstinent Israeli inmates. The study focuses primarily on three personal variables: sense of coherence (SOC), anxiety, and hostility. Additional factors that were examined are demographic variables, which include background, crime, and drug addiction. The sample included 119 inmates (65 males and 54 females) who abstained from drugs use for two different time intervals--up to one year, and more than one year--and did not receive treatment. Overall, males and females shared similar backgrounds

OBJECTIVES: This article addressed the role of goal adjustment (i.e. disengagement from unattainable goals and reengagement in alternative goals) and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies (i.e. rumination, catastrophizing, positive refocusing) in cancer patients' psychological well-being. We expected that patients who are better able to disengage from unattainable goals, identify alternative goals, and regulate their emotions by positive refocusing and not engaging in rumination and catastrophizing would experience less negative and more positive affect.
DESIGN: In this cross-sectional stud…

The term functional amnesia (FA) has been proposed for cases of memory impairment presenting with severe retrograde amnesia in the absence of cerebral injury or history of psychiatric disturbance. Emotional flattening has often been reported alongside FA, however the mechanism of such a modification is unknown. This study aimed to explore the emotional processing in a rare case of a patient with FA complaining of severe emotional flattening. We presented ecological dynamic video stimuli conveying strong peaceful and fearful emotions to the patient and 13 controls. We then explored their emotio…

We aimed to clarify the relation between affective valence and motivational direction by specifying how central and peripheral components of extension movements are altered according to specific unpleasant affective states. As predicted, premotor reaction time was quicker for extension movements initiated during exposure to attack than for extension movements initiated during exposure to all other valence categories (mutilation, erotic couples, opposite-sex nudes, neutral humans, household objects, blank). Exposure to erotic couples and mutilations yielded greater peak force than exposure to i

PURPOSE: This research examined whether the frequencies of specific emotions are associated with major and minor depression in older primary care patients.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Older primary care patients (N = 146), prescreened with a depression questionnaire, completed a diagnostic interview and an emotions questionnaire.
RESULTS: Controlling for age, sex, and other psychiatric and medical illnesses, major depressives differed from nondepressed controls in nine emotions; minor depressives differed from controls in four emotions. Major depressives differed from the controls more in sadness, j…

Thirteen children and adolescents with diagnoses of Asperger syndrome (AS) were matched with 13 nonautistic control children on chronological age and verbal IQ. They were tested on their ability to recognize simple facial emotions, as well as facial emotions paired with matching, mismatching, or irrelevant verbal labels. There were no differences between the groups at recognizing simple emotions but the Asperger group performed significantly worse than the control group at recognizing emotions when faces were paired with mismatching words (but not with matching or irrelevant words). The result…

The aim of the present study was to investigate persistence of the clinical effectiveness of a 5-weekly structured group intervention program for Japanese breast cancer patients. Each program is a series of five 90-min sessions, which include psycho-education, problem-solving, psychological support, relaxation training, and guided imagery. Fifty-seven patients with breast cancer participated in the program and the 47 who completed were analyzed. The results of the Profile of Mood States (POMS) scores were compared before, just after, and 6 months after the intervention. According to the change

In most patients with severe and symptomatic paroxysmal hypertension, a pheochromocytoma or other medical cause is rarely identified. This article presents the psychosocial assessment of 10 such patients, in whom the absence of any emotional distress preceding paroxysms had discouraged consideration of any psychological basis. However, a causative role of repressed unreported emotions was strongly suggested by 1) a history of unusually severe emotional trauma in 8 of 10 patients, 2) the absence of feelings related to the trauma, and 3) the prompt and sustained response of 3 patients to psychot…

This study examined hemispatial bias in a free-viewing condition of the judgement of facial expressions of emotions. Right-handed male subjects were asked to judge the intensity, in terms of expressiveness, of facial emotion in normal and mirror-reversed orientations. Expressions in mirror-reversed orientation were perceived as more intense than in normal orientation.

Differential emotions theory (Izard, 1972) provides a conceptual framework for the role of emotions in affective disorders. The present study investigated the relation of emotions to depression in a sample of child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients (N = 145). Findings indicate that shyness, anger, enjoyment, and shame explained 51.4% of the variance in depression scores. Furthermore, profiles of emotions experienced by youths with a depressive disorder differed significantly from emotion profiles of nondepressed youths on the following emotions: enjoyment, surprise, sadness, anger, shame, …

The data on verbal and nonverbal expression of emotions and their perception in patients suffering from drug dependence+ are related. Three experimental psychological methods were employed to examine 30 patients with opium dependence, 30 patients suffering from ephedrone dependence (mean age 30 years, the mean period of narcotic use 7 years, 50% of the test subjects were men, and 50% were women), and 60 test subjects of the control group. The majority of the drug dependence+ patients manifested the impairment of the impressive aspect: reduction of the ability to recognize emotions according to…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) modulates empathic choice, and whether any such effect differs for ingroup versus outgroup targets, in a single-session behavioural experiment.
METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy East Asian participants were randomly assigned to active taVNS or sham stimulation groups. After 15 minutes of stimulation, participants completed an adapted Empathy Selection Task (EST), choosing to empathize with or describe facial expressions of ingroup (Asian) and outgroup (African) targets displaying negative emotions. Because …

Urban walking offers a unique lens to understand how environmental conditions affect human well-being through both perception and physiological response. This study analyzes 2,207 walking trips from 90 participants from their daily mobility patterns in Lisbon, Portugal, integrating GPS trajectories, physiological signals, self-reported emotions, semantic street imagery, and high-resolution environmental data. We examined how urban features-such as vegetation, noise, sky visibility, infrastructure, and points of interest - relate to peripheral bio signals, like heart rate variability, electrode…

Sleep loss influences basic emotional and cognitive processes, but its impact on higher-order naturalistic cognition, such as aesthetic judgements, is less understood. The current study primarily investigated whether experimental sleep restriction altered aesthetic evaluations of abstract artwork, and secondarily tested whether these evaluations were influenced by stereotypes associated with the listed artist's gender or ethnicity (Caucasian vs. African American). Sixty-eight young adults (Mage = 19.97, 52.94% female, 55.88% non-Caucasian) completed a multi-week, counterbalanced, crossover stu

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated music-induced activation of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal across brain networks associated with auditory perception, motor control, and emotion. However, BOLD-fMRI reflects vascular responses that may not fully capture underlying neural activity. Here, we used simultaneous [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) functional positron emission tomography (fPET) and fMRI to examine glucose metabolism closely linked to neural activity, alongside hemodynamic responses during pleasurable music listening. Thirty-five female
