Hydrogen peroxide is a widely available disinfectant that has been reported to cause colitis. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who presented with an acute proctitis caused by a self-inflicted 3% hydrogen peroxide enema. The patient's intention was to cure himself of a recently diagnosed prostate cancer, because the waiting list for oncological consultation was deemed too long. The pathogenesis of hydrogen peroxide mucosal injury and a review of the literature is discussed.

The colographic appearance of intussusception is variously described as a claw sign, pincer defect, shouldering effect, and coiled-spring pattern. This report adds a new radiographic sign to the list. An end-on view of an intussusception on barium enema shows a ring of contrast resembling a solar eclipse. Familiarity with this bizarre appearance is desirable, lest it may be mistaken for spillage of barium due to a colonic perforation.

BACKGROUND: Antegrade continent enema (ACE) procedure has been accepted worldwide as the salvage procedure for intractable constipation and faecal incontinence after anorectal malformation surgery. Its application only has been reported from the developed countries.
METHODS: The authors performed four such operations on incontinent children in a poor socioeconomic group in South Africa.
RESULTS: Three patients had previous surgery for anorectal malformation, and one had intractable encopresis. The patients kept clean with water washouts only, starting 1 week after the operation.

METHODS: By a retrospective review of patients treated between 1990 and 1996 in a tertiary referral center, 36 patients were treated with a Malone procedure. There were 59 cases with 62 episodes of sonogram-proven intussusception between July 1990 and November 1995 at the Department of Pediatrics of the Pingtung Christian Hospital. Except 2 episodes transferred and 4 episodes which reduced spontaneously, ultrasound-guided saline enema was performed in 56 episodes. The enema has evolved through trial and error, not scientific investigation. Because little scientific base exists, the authors began their study of enemas by examining current nursing practice.
