A 64-year-old woman presented with a one-and-one-half year history of an enlarging, red-brown, firm plaque on the left thigh, with numerous, scattered, indurated, hyperpigmented patches on the lower extremities. A 45-year old female presented with recurrent eruption of polycyclic erythematous lesion for nearly 2 years. During this period of observation no cause could be determined. Biopsy report was consistent with diagnosis of erythema annulare centrifugum.

A 47-year-old woman suffering from chronic abdominal pain developed erythema ab igne (reticular hyperpigmentation of the skin caused by exposure to heat). Histological examination revealed premalignant changes in two specimens of affected skin. The incidence of erythema ab igne is declining since fewer people use open fires for heating. In a prospective clinical study of erythema multiforme (EM), we identified 22 subjects who experienced more than 1 episode. These subjects were young, with an average age of 29 years. They had an average number of 12 previous episodes, with each episode lasting 3 weeks. The average interval between episodes was 4.9 months. We counted the number and location of each skin lesion and found that patients had an average of 188 EM skin lesions at the time of their evaluation. First described by Hutchinson in 1878, erythema elevatum diutinum (EED) is a rare disease characterized by persistent red, raised nodules and plaques in a symmetrical, acral distribution. The disease occurs equally in the sexes, primarily in the 30- to 60-year age group. We report a representative case of EED which responded to current agents, and briefly review the status of the disease.
