Infusion of 500 ml oxypolygelatin (Gelifundol, 5.5% solution) in eight healthy volunteers led to hemodilution wiht consecutive changes of rheological parameters. Blood viscosity was statistically significantly lowered whereas plasma viscosity values showed a slight increase. RBC aggregation was slightly increased, RBC deformability remained unchanged.

Human blood samples were investigated in vitro to observe the antithrombotic effect of water extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP). The results showed that GP could inhibit significantly the platelet aggregation induced by ADP and compound agonists (P < 0.05), accelerate obviously the disaggregation (P < 0.05) and inhibit effectively the experimental thrombosis (P < 0.05). The delayed effects of GP on KPTT, PT, TT, AT, RVV-RT, RVV-CT suggested that this drug could decrease the activity of multiple coagulation factors. We investigated the RBC aggregability in the patients with the foot diabetic gangrenes: in the venous blood samples taken from the damaged foot before its amputation, as well as from the cubital vein (the systemic circulation). The RBC aggregability was investigated with the "Georgian technique" that is sensitive and provided us with direct and quantitative data. Blood viscosity and other rheological properties of blood have important effects on blood circulation. In preterm infants, blood viscosity (at given hematocrit), plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation are decreased compared to term neonates and adults. The effect of medium viscosity on lysis of red blood cells (RBC) induced by snake venom phospholipase A2 (PLA2) was examined. The medium viscosity was modified by the addition of various macromolecules which differ in their chemical nature and in their capacity to increase fluid viscosity.
