Patient needs in the context of gynecologic oncology and breast cancer: a validation study.

Medical advancements and therapeutic innovations are progressing rapidly, necessitating corresponding adaptations in the delivery of patient-centered care. This study explores the needs of women diagnosed with gynecologic and breast cancers, using the frameworks of the National Academy of Medicine and the Picker Institute as reflective lenses. We conducted a qualitative, single-center study employing grounded theory methodology. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 20 patients undergoing treatment for gynecologic malignancies and breast cancer at a university medical center. Interv

The ethics of enhancement among image and performance enhancing drug coaches.

This research examines image and performance-enhancing drug (IPED) use, specifically focusing on the emerging role of IPED coaches. Situating drug use within broader assemblage theory, we investigated how these coaches, often operating in an online context, function as enabling environments, influencing practices, and contributing to harm reduction in a broader social context within and for IPED communities. Ten IPED coaches were interviewed, with this work focusing on their legal, ethical, and moral considerations, risk assessment, and harm reduction strategies of their practices. We employed

Being an ethical leader during the apocalypse: Lessons from the walking dead to face the COVID-19 crisis.

This article draws on Gareth Morgan's theory of organizational metaphors. Using imaginization, this research examines practices of ethical leadership during a crisis, using The Walking Dead television series as a reference. The Walking Dead offers an artistic representation of different leadership styles, with business organizations likened to groups of survivors. Its post-apocalyptic setting offers something of an analogy to the COVID-19 crisis. Each firm's struggle for survival in the face of external threats is paralleled with each community's struggle to protect members' lives, preserve re

Healthcare practitioners as accomplices: a qualitative study of gender affirmation in a context of ambiguous regulation in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The World Professional Association for Transgender Health guidelines Standards of Care 8 draw on ethical arguments based on individual autonomy, to argue that healthcare and other professionals should be advocates for trans people. Such guidelines presume the presence of medical services for trans people and a degree of consensus on medical ethics. Very little is known, however, about the ethical challenges associated with both providing and accessing trans healthcare, including gender affirmation, in the Global South. In light of the challenges associated with medical and legal ge

Using Participatory Action Research to Redirect Tinnitus Treatment and Research-An Interview Study.

Background: Chronic bothersome tinnitus is a prevalent tinnitus subtype placing a high burden on affected individuals, economies, and healthcare systems. Patient and professional perspectives seem to be partly misaligned on how to improve tinnitus research and treatments in the future. This qualitative interview study was aimed at exploring, comparing, and stipulating the perspectives of different tinnitus stakeholder groups on ways of redirecting research and treatments to reduce patients' suffering while accounting for challenges within these practices. Methods: This study used the participa

The new ethical challenges raised by the authorization of elective egg freezing in France since 2021.

PURPOSE: Since 2021, elective egg freezing (EEF) without medical indication has been authorized and fully reimbursed in France for women aged 29 to 37. While this regulatory change represents a significant advancement in reproductive rights, it also raises new ethical and organizational challenges. This study aimed to explore the ethical issues experienced by infertility specialists involved in the clinical implementation of EEF in France. METHODS: This prospective, qualitative, monocentric study was conducted in a university-based ART center. All physicians involved in EEF at the center were

Re-enchanting Consumer Ethics Through Embodied Relationality: An Ethnographic Approach to the Attitude-Behaviour Gap.

Most research on the 'attitude-behaviour gap' adopts linear, rational, and individual models, or highlights notions of consumer uncertainty and confusion. We argue that different strands of the debate can benefit from an exploration of embodied relational processes shaping consumer ethics, namely an acknowledgement of the profound corporeal and interdependent nature of all consumption experiences. The aim of this paper is thus to explore the embodied relational aspects of everyday ethical consumption and cast new light on the 'attitude-behaviour gap'. We do so by drawing on embodiment in pract

An application of the Theory of Planned Behavior within a living organ donation education intervention for American Muslim communities: a pre-post evaluation.

The disparity between supply and demand for life-saving and life-sustaining donor organs disproportionally affects ethnic and racial minorities, which is partly due to negative attitudes and beliefs regarding transplantation. One way to address these disparities is to implement targeted and tailored behavioral interventions among minority communities, such as the American Muslim population. We designed, implemented, and evaluated a religiously tailored, ethically balanced, and mosque-based educational intervention within the USA. This intervention increased participants' biomedical and religio

Presymptomatic genetic testing in children for neurofibromatosis 2.

Genetic testing in children, when there is a question of whether or not there is a clear medical benefit that will accrue to the child, is a controversial topic within the health care community. A convenience sample of 10 parents from nine families who had made the decision whether or not to test their children for the neurofibromatosis 2 gene mutation was asked in interviews to describe why they made their choice about presymptomatic testing for this late-onset disease. Findings from a narrative analysis revealed how the nine parents who tested or intended to test their young children saw the

Moral community and animal research in medicine.

The invocation of moral rights in moral/social debate today is a recipe for deadlock in our consideration of substantive issues. How we treat animals and humans in part should derive from the value of their lives, which is a function of the quality of their lives, which in turn is a function of the richness of their lives. Consistency in argument requires that humans with a low quality of life should be chosen as experimental subjects over animals with a higher quality of life.

Ethics of selective treatment of spina bifida. Report by a working party.

Ethical problems in medicine usually arise when normal guiding principles appear to be in conflict. In the case of babies with severe spina bifida, or similar abnormalities, two such fundamental principles may be applied with opposing conclusions. The first is that any decision requires an estimate of the balance of suffering and happiness for those concerned in an action, and the other is the assertion that human life is sacred. Resolution of the conflict between these is possible by looking at the problem in a different and less fundamental way, and one such approach is through the concept o

Moral repair with offenders: ethical issues arising from victimization experiences.

In this article, the authors examine the relevance of the concept of moral repair for sex offenders who have been victims of sexual or physical abuse. First, they briefly review the literature on victimization rates and effects in sexual offenders. Second, the notion of moral repair and its constituent tasks is examined with particular emphasis given to Margaret Walker's recent analysis of the concept. Third, the concept of moral repair is applied to offenders and its implications and possible constraints discussed. Fourth, the authors outline a normative framework for addressing victimization

Implementation of electronic medication management systems in hospital settings: a theory-informed systematic review protocol of mechanisms influencing patient safety, operational efficiency and staff experience.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic medication management systems (EMMS) are central to hospital digital transformation and are intended to improve patient safety, operational efficiency and staff experience, but evidence of their impact remains fragmented, inconsistent and context-dependent. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand how local organisational structures and complex sociotechnical factors drive successful long-term integration. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This systematic review will search MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, ABI/INFORM Collection and Business Source Premier for

Psychosocial boundaries of digital well-being: Exploring smartphone addiction, information overload, and sense of belonging in mobile ecosystem.

In the digital era, mobile applications have become ubiquitous in China's organizational and daily life, creating a condition in which constant connectivity coexists with social disconnection, posing critical challenges to user well-being management. This study investigates how smartphone addiction undermines sense of belonging, treated here as one key dimension of the broader digital well-being construct rather than as digital well-being in full, through the mediating role of information overload, with self-control and social media fatigue as boundary conditions. Based on a sample of 326 Chin

Primary Care Physician Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence for Dementia Screening: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Automated approaches to cognitive impairment screening may soon achieve sufficient levels of accuracy for clinical implementation but they present potentially serious ethical challenges. Overcoming such challenges for successful implementation of automated screening may depend on the perspective of the clinicians who are its intended users. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study of internal medicine, geriatrics and family medicine physicians recruited from ambulatory practices in New York City, NY to identify ethical challenges of implementing automated CI screening (n = 22). International migration of Africa-born health workers: a scoping review of drivers and policies, 2010-2024.

BACKGROUND: Africa faces a critical shortage of human resources for health (HRH), crucial for improving population health. We described drivers of and policies to manage the migration of Africa-born HRH from source (African) countries in Africa to destination (non-African) countries. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, using data from peer-reviewed articles (2010-2024) and gray literature from institutions like Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). We used push-pull theory to identify economic, professional,

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

Clinical dimensions of a 'biological concept': transsexualism and the interplay between etiological theory and clinical therapy.

In 1966, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine became the first American medical institution to perform sex reassignment surgeries. This article interrogates the relationship between the emergence of this clinical therapy in the United States and the changing medical understandings of the contemporaneous condition it was intended to address - 'transsexualism.' I argue that, during the mid-to-late twentieth century, therapeutic practices and theories about the etiology of transsexualism were mutually constitutive. On one hand, the clinical development of sex reassignment surgery preci
