[Fronto-ethmoidal mucocele: a case report].

Paranasal sinus mucoceles can present ophthalmic disturbances. Our aim is to discuss the treatment and the endoscopic sinus surgery indication in the fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucoceles. We describe here a case of fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucocele in a patient with an important fronto-ethmoidal tumefaction and an increased prominence of his left eyeball. An endoscopic approach was done after explain to the patient the eventual risks and complications of the procedure, especially to his left eye.

Approach to naso-frontal-ethmoidal complex fractures.

Naso-fronto-ethmoidal complex fractures are infrequently encountered. The authors' approach to the management of the patient with this injury is presented emphasizing the importance of the adoption of a systematic approach to the evaluation of the patient with a maxillofacial injury. The frequency of associated injuries is stressed. The open reduction of this fracture and the use of interosseous fixation is recommended. The importance and technique of repair of the medial canthal ligaments is reviewed as well as the authors' preference for the use of the "open sky" exposure in most patients wi

Orbital osteoma: three case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoma is the most frequent benign tumor of paranasal sinuses. It is generally asymptomatic and usually discovered by chance during radiological imaging. Three cases with orbital extension are reported and discussed. OBSERVATIONS: 1st observation: Mrs. M.N. is an 18 years-old caucasian female who presented a stony orbital deformity associated with chronical dacryocystitis. Tomography of the orbit revealed a probable ethmoidal osteoma compressing the lacrimal canals. The management consisted in a surgical excision of the whole tumor by external approach, associated with a dacryo

Orbital necrotizing fasciitis and osteomyelitis caused by arcanobacterium haemolyticum: a case report.

The facial region is infrequently affected by necrotizing infections. Orbital necrotizing infections are even rarer, seen following trauma, local skin infection, and sinusitis. The authors report a unique case of orbital necrotizing fasciitis and osteomyelitis resulting from Arcanobacterium Haemolyticum ethmoid sinusitis. No prior occurrences of Arcanobacterial species orbital necrotizing fasciitis/osteomyelitis have been reported.A 16-year-old boy presented to the ER with a 3-day history of fever, chills, headache, and sinus pressure. CT scan revealed soft tissue swelling of the right orbit,

Aneurysmal bone cyst at the base of the skull.

Aneurysmal bone cysts have been described as pseudocysts in view of their lack of an epithelial lining. These cysts are uncommon, but when they do occur they typically involve the long bones of the extremities, the membranous bones of the thorax and pelvis, and the vertebrae. Skull involvement is uncommon. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with nasal obstruction and a swelling of the right cheek. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography detected a heterogeneous cystic mass involving the sphenoid and ethmoid bones. The mass was excised via a lateral rhinotomy approach, and it…

[The expanding skull fracture (author's transl)].

An expanding skull fracture with exceptional extension into the frontal sinus, the orbit and the ethmoidal cells is discussed. A 12 year old boy fell down the stairs at the age of 8 years and fractured his left frontal bone with extension to the base of the skull. He was seen because of a swelling of the scalp, an intermittent orbital oedema and convulsions. At neurosurgery a large gaping fracture of the frontal bone was found and this was interposed with fibrous tissue and relatively denatured cerebral tissue. The management both neurosurgical and rhinological is discussed.

[Anatomical variations of the ethmomaxillary sinus].

OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence and individual variations of the ethmomaxillary sinus (EMS) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: CBCT images from 553 dental and ENT patients (1106 sides), presenting to treatment at Minsk outpatient clinics, Belarus, were used in this study. The maximum vertical diameter of ethmomaxillary sinus in the coronal plane was measured. Anatomical variations of the ostiomeatal complex and mucosal diseases of paranasal sinuses were recorded. RESULTS: Ethmomaxillary sinus - is posterior ethmoidal cell extending to the posterior super

FDG PET/CT in ALK-positive Histiocytosis of the Nasal Cavity in a Pediatric Patient.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive histiocytosis is a rare newly recognized subtype of histiocytic neoplasms. The disease can involve multiple systems or single system. We present FDG PET/CT findings in a pediatric patient with ALK-positive histiocytosis isolated to the left nasal cavity. The nasal cavity tumor invaded the nasal septum, left nasal bone, and left ethmoid sinus and showed intense FDG activity with an SUV max of 9.9.

Transantral repair of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas using bone chips, Tisseel, fascia and plaster of Paris.

Cerebrospinal rhinorrhea is a potentially serious symptom due to the risk of an ascending infection, which may produce a fulminant meningitis. Plaster of Paris has been used to obliterate the sphenoidal sinus and posterior ethmoids in five patients with cerebrospinal rhinorrhea. The fistulas were identified by computed cisternography and repaired by a transantral approach using a microsurgical technique, and bone chips, Tisseel and fascia to seal the fistulas. There have been no postoperative problems or leakage in the three patients with fistulas to the sphenoidal sinus. The cerebrospinal rhi

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma.

Fibro-osseous lesions represent a variety of bone proliferations each characterized by different morphologic patterns of osteoid production. Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) is characterized histologically by numerous small round ossicles resembling psammoma bodies and is a locally invasive lesion of facial and cranial bones. Two cases of POF arising in the ethmoid sinus and involving the orbit are presented to emphasize the importance of complete surgical removal of involved bones. Histologically, portions of POF may demonstrate other patterns of osteoid production, which resemble fibrous

Cystic Shape Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma of Ethmoid Sinus.

Cemento-ossifying fibromas are a group of rarely occurring benign tumours, developing from the periodontal membrane and varying considerably in appearance and in the progress of the disease. Their common feature is higher or lower production of cemental tissue. In most cases the tumours are small because their cementoma mature quickly and become inactive, which causes the tumour to stop growing. They develop most frequently in the mandible and also in the maxilla. Other sites, such as paranasal cavities, soft tissues and bones of the head, are extremely rare. The case of a cemento-fibrosing tu

Examination of ethmoidal roof regarding Keros and Yenigun classifications in a Turkish population: a computerized tomography study.

PURPOSE: Understanding ethmoid roof morphology is crucial to prevent complications in endoscopic sinus surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological properties of the ethmoidal roof regarding gender and age differences using Keros and Yenigun classifications on high-resolution computed tomography images. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 891 high-resolution computed tomography paranasal sinus study images and measured the depth of the cribriform plate in coronal sections and the anterior-posterior length in axial planes. The study retrospectively examined CT images of paranasal s

[Ethmoidal mucocele after transpalpebral bony orbital decompression].

We report a case of a late ethmoidal mucocele occurring after transpalpebral bony orbital decompression. A 39-year-old man presented with a recurrence of a right-sided proptosis without signs of orbital inflammation. The patient had undergone bilateral transpalpebral bony orbital decompression for dysthyroid orbitopathy 2 years prior. Orbital CT scan showed a large mucocele in the supero-lateral right ethmoidal sinus with lateral extension to the medial rectus. The patient was therefore referred to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon, who performed an anterior ethmoidectomy with marsupializa
