Periodontal health and systemic disorders.

Recent studies in periodontal medicine suggest a mild to moderate association between human periodontal disease and certain systemic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, heart disease and preterm birth. The latest evidence, presented at a symposium entitled Periodontal Health and Systemic Disorders, sponsored by the University of Western Ontario School of Dentistry, showed that indeed such an association is likely. New data suggest that this association is not indicated by traditional clinical signs of periodontal disease but rather by a cluster of host immune and inflammatory media

Does motivational interviewing have a role in dentistry?

Traditional approaches to health promotion involve clinicians imparting knowledge to patients and 'telling' patients what changes they should make to benefit their health. This so-called 'fixing reflex' can be counterproductive and ineffective, creating unhelpful discord between clinicians and patients. There is little evidence that this approach is wholly effective in bringing about healthier patient behaviours. In contrast, motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centred consultation style aimed at developing patient motivation and commitment for a range of health-related behaviours. It

Eruptive tooth movement--the current state of knowledge.

How the dentition erupts, and what controls it, is fundamental to almost all aspects of clinical dentistry, yet the mechanisms behind this have not yet been fully elucidated. When the process continues into space that has been created through toothwear or tooth loss, problems in placing restorations can be encountered. This review examines the possible mechanisms of tooth eruption. Differences between processes in animals and humans are highlighted. The limitations of conclusions drawn from animal studies are then discussed with reference to human dental conditions. The differing forms of over

[Team management of orofacial clefts].

In the Netherlands 15 centres provide multidisciplinary care for cleft lip and palate patients. Usually the following disciplines participate in such teams: paediatrics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthodontics, genetics, social work or nursing, ENT, speech therapy, maxillofacial surgery, prosthetic dentistry, psychology and oral hygiene. An overview is given of the treatment protocol from birth until 20 years of age for a child with a complete UCLP or BCLP. It is concluded that properly designed prospective clinical trials are rare, resulting in a lack of evidence based care in the fi

Current Developments in Antibacterial Nanoparticle-Based Dental Composite Materials: A Comprehensive Overview.

The persistence of secondary caries, biofilm accumulation, and hybrid layer degradation as leading causes of failure in resin-based composite (RBC) restorations underscores the urgent need for materials that can effectively prevent demineralization and promote the remineralization of dental hard tissues. Conventional composites are primarily bioinert, offer minimal defense against cariogenic biofilms, and lack the ability to restore mineral loss at the tooth-restoration interface. Recent advancements in nanotechnology have paved the way for the development of antibacterial and bioactive compos
