Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Visual Potentials in Kawasaki Disease: An Observational Monocentric Study.

Background: Kawasaki Disease is a systemic vasculitis, particularly involving coronary arteries. Rare involvement of other vascular districts is described, as central nervous system arteries, leading to a vasculitic neuropathy. Sensorineural hearing loss and alterations of evoked potentials are uncommonly reported complications. Methods: In an observational monocentric study, 59 children (37 males; 22 females; mean age: 2.7 ± 2.2 years) with documented Kawasaki Disease were enrolled. No risk factors for hearing loss and/or neurological impairment were identified in the cohort. Brainstem audito

Preventing position-related brachial plexus injury with intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials during anterior cervical spine surgery.

The use of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) to monitor upper extremity nerves during surgery is becoming more accepted as a valid and useful technique to minimize intraoperative nerve injuries. We present a case illustrating the benefit of utilizing both SSEPs and transcranial electrical motor evoked potentials (TCeMEPs) for preventing position-related injury during surgery. The patient was a 43-year-old male with a history of neck pain, along with numbness and tingling of the upper extremities. While the patient was being draped, upper extremity SSEPs diminished significantly TCeMEP re

Evaluation of brain function in severe human head trauma with multimodality evoked potentials. Part 1: Evoked brain-injury potentials, methods, and analysis.

Methods for obtaining multimodality evoked potentials, somatosensory, visual, auditory, and auditory brain-stem potentials in patients with severe head trauma are described. A method of analyzing abnormal multimodality evoked potentials (graded evoked brain-injury potentials) is proposed that defines the degree of abnormality of the electrophysiological data and expresses it simply in four grades per modality. Data from 20 normal subjects are given for comparison with the abnormal data obtained from 51 patients with head trauma.

Abnormal parameters of magnetically evoked motor-evoked potentials in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Magnetic stimulation (MS), which is used to evaluate motor pathways, is helpful in evaluating cervical spinal cord compression (cervical myelopathy [CM]). Previous studies have shown that the central motor conduction time (CMCT), which is the time taken for the nerve impulses to reach the cervical spinal roots after the stimulation of the motor cortex, is prolonged in CM. However, the duration of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in CM has not been studied in detail. PURPOSE: To compare the duration, CMCT and amplitude of MEPs by MS between patients with clinical and magnetic

Normative Values for Contact Heat and Cold Evoked Potentials.

OBJECTIVE: To establish normative values for contact heat evoked potentials (CHEP) and cold evoked potentials (CEP), providing a reference for evaluating small fibre neuropathy (SFN) and spinothalamic tract (STT) function. METHODS: Thermal quantitative sensory testing and sensory nerve conduction studies were conducted for screening subjects. CHEP and CEP were recorded from the distal volar forearm and foot dorsum of 80 healthy participants (26-75 years) using a 1.2 cm2 contact thermal stimulator (ramp: 300°C/s, heat: 60°C, cold: 10°C, duration: 200 ms). Age-grouped descriptive statistics wer

Early nociceptive evoked potentials (NEPs) recorded from the scalp.

OBJECTIVE: Neurophysiological investigation of nociceptive pathway has so far been limited to late cortical responses. We sought to detect early components of the cortical evoked potentials possibly reflecting primary sensory activity. METHODS: The 150 IDE micropatterned electrode was used to selectively activate Aδ intraepidermic fibres of the right hand dorsum in 25 healthy subjects and 3 patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia. Neurographic recordings were performed to assess type of stimulated fibres and check selectivity. Cortical evoked potentials were recorded from C3'-Fz and Cz-A

Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is raised intracranial pressure without any identifiable etiology. The inner ear structures are susceptible to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure changes because of connections between the CSF space and the labyrinth to explain the audiovestibular symptoms, such as pulsatile tinnitus or dizziness, reported in 50% to 60% of these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the vestibular functions using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) in IIH. METHODS: cVEMPs were recorded in 30 patients with IIH before lumbar pu

Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials: Where Are We Now?

OBJECTIVE: Over the last decade, ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) have evolved as a new clinical test for dynamic otolith (predominantly utricular) function. The aim of this review is to give an update on the neurophysiological foundations of oVEMPs and their implications for recording and interpreting oVEMP responses in clinical practice. CONCLUSION: Different lines of anatomical, neurophysiological, and clinical evidence support the notion that oVEMPs measure predominantly contralateral utricular function, while cervical cVEMPs are an indicator of ipsilateral saccular f

Estimation of neural phase locking from stimulus-evoked potentials.

The frequency extent over which fine structure is coded in the auditory nerve has been physiologically characterized in laboratory animals but is unknown in humans. Knowledge of the upper frequency limit in humans would inform the debate regarding the role of fine structure in human hearing. Of the presently available techniques, only the recording of mass neural potentials offers the promise to provide a physiological estimate of neural phase locking in humans. A challenge is to disambiguate neural phase locking from the receptor potentials. We studied mass potentials recorded on the cochlea

Visual Evoked Potentials in Infants With Diffuse Periventricular Leukomalacia.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is characterized by necrosis of the cerebral white matter in the dorsolateral portions of the lateral ventricles. PVL causes motor, sensory, and cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to analyze the conduction characteristics of the visual pathway in infants with diffuse PVL using visual evoked potentials (VEPs). We studied 11 healthy infants (mean age 3.3 ± 1.3 months) and 17 with diffuse PVL (mean age 2.9 ± 0.8 months and mean gestational age 31.9 ± 3.1 weeks). The N75, P100, and N135 wave latencies; the interwave N75-P100 and P100-N135 latencies; an

Visual evoked potentials in children prenatally exposed to methylmercury.

Prenatal exposure to methylmercury can cause both neurobehavioral deficits and neurophysiological changes. However, evidence of neurotoxic effects within the visual nervous system is inconsistent, possibly due to incomplete statistical adjustment for beneficial nutritional factors. We evaluated the effect of prenatal methylmercury exposure on visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies in Faroese children with elevated prenatal methylmercury exposure. A cohort of 182 singleton term births was assembled in the Faroe Islands during 1994-1995. At age 7 years, VEP tracings were obtained from 139 cohor

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and motion sickness susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: A functional vestibular system is a prerequisite for motion sickness (MS) to occur. The otolithic organs (saccule and utricle) are currently considered to be important in the pathogenesis of MS. Recent investigations have demonstrated that the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP) test is an objective evaluation of utricular function. To date, there is no functional guide that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to MS. Therefore, we investigated the link between oVEMP and MS susceptibility. METHOD: The oVEMP test was performed on 31 MS susce
