Exploring adaptive capacity to arid heat in remote First Nations communities in Central Australia.

Extreme heat is associated with increased mortality and high health service demands. Despite a substantial body of heat-health research in Australia, there is limited evidence on hot weather-specific impacts on First Nations people living in remote communities. Here we used one-on-one yarning sessions, a First Nations form of knowledge sharing, with 30 participants (n = 30) to explore factors influencing vulnerability and resilience to hot weather in four remote First Nations communities of Central Australia. Using purposive and snowball sampling, participants were recruited to document lived …

Anthropogenic climate change drives rising global heat stress and its spatial inequality.

Global heat stress is intensifying under climate change, yet the relative roles of natural and anthropogenic forcing remain insufficiently quantified. Here, we show that global heat stress trend, assessed with the Universal Thermal Climate Index, increases markedly over the past four decades, with 52% of land area experiencing rises in mean heat stress intensity and 67% showing increases in extreme heat stress days. We find that anthropogenic climate change overwhelmingly dominates these trends, with the land area it dominates nearly twice as large as that dominated by natural climate change. …

A systematic review assessing the association between extreme temperature exposure and cardiovascular health outcomes in Africa.

The African continent is grappling with a rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in conjunction with the growing threat of climate change and its associated extreme temperatures. This systematic review aims to assess the relationship between extreme temperature exposures (heat and cold exposure) and cardiovascular health outcomes in African populations. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in compiling this evidence. A comprehensive literature search was performed on PubMed-Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Goo

Heat- and cold-induced injuries in athletes: evaluation and management.

Both extreme heat and cold can be challenging for athletes during training and competition. One role of the team physician is to educate coaches and athletes on the risks of exposure to these conditions and how to best prevent and manage their adverse effects. Heat illness varies in degree from mild to severe, with the most severe forms being potentially fatal. Cold exposure can result in systemic effects and peripheral injury to the extremities.

Nocturnal heat exposure and stroke risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent decades, nighttime temperatures have increased faster than daytime temperatures. The increasing prevalence of nocturnal heat exposure may pose a significant risk to cardiovascular health. This study investigated the association between nighttime heat exposure and stroke risk in the region of Augsburg, Germany, and examined its temporal variations over 15 years. METHODS: Hourly meteorological parameters, including mean temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure, were acquired from a local meteorological station. A data set was obtained consisting of

Dynamic assessment of occupational heat stress in deep mine roadways: A coupled heat-moisture model for predictive microenvironmental analysis.

Deep mining operations generate extreme thermal environments that impose serious occupational health risks on miners. To dynamically capture the spatiotemporal evolution of heat-moisture exposure, we developed a three-dimensional transient model incorporating a moving-mesh technique to simulate progressive excavation. The model, rigorously validated against field measurements (relative errors <2.0 %), demonstrates that excavation induces distinct airflow zones, with vortices near the working face forming critical hotspots of health risk. Within these zones, recirculation drives localized surge

The West Nile Virus outbreak in Israel (2000) from a new perspective: the regional impact of climate change.

The West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak in Israel in 2000 appeared after medical and climatic warning signs. Re-analysis of the epidemic from a new viewpoint, the regional impact of global warming, especially the worsening in the summers' heat conditions, is presented. The disease appeared averagely at a lag of 3-9 weeks (strongest correlation = lag of 7 weeks). The minimum temperature was found as the most important climatic factor that encourages the disease earlier appearance. Extreme heat is more significant than high air humidity for increasing WNV cases. An early extreme rise in the summer te…

The impacts of environmental heat on menopausal symptoms: A global scoping review.

The warming global climate is increasing heat exposures. Women undergoing menopause experience thermoregulatory and other changes; however, there is a lack of evidence to determine if menopausal women are disproportionately affected by extreme hot weather. A scoping review was conducted to describe the evidence for heat risks to health and wellbeing in menopausal women. The databases Medline, Embase, Global Health, and Scopus were searched for studies that investigated the relationship between heat and health and wellbeing outcomes in perimenopausal and menopausal populations globally. 17 stud

Building heat resilience through district-wide training of frontline health workers in India: a pre-post evaluation of the climate care champions programme in Ananthapuramu district.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is a growing public health emergency in India, with rural and low-income communities most at risk. Early symptoms are often overlooked, delaying care and increasing mortality risk. Frontline health workers (FHWs) are critical for prevention and early intervention yet major knowledge and preparedness gaps persist. This study aimed to evaluate a district-wide training programme designed to improve FHWs' knowledge and confidence in identifying, managing and preventing heat-related illnesses. METHODS: The Climate Care Champions Programme (CCCP) was designed to strengthe…

Effects of gestational ambient extreme temperature exposures on the risk of preterm birth in China: A sibling-matched study based on a multi-center prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological findings on extreme temperature and preterm birth (PTB) were heterogeneous, especially for extreme cold exposure. Measured and unmeasured individual-level factors such as genetic factors or lifecourse exposures may constitute important contributors but have not been addressed. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the association of gestational heat and cold exposure with PTB using a novel sibling-matched study. METHODS: Based on a multi-center population-based birth cohort across 16 counties in China, we included 10,826 sibling pairs born from March 2013 to De

Differential resistance of heat shock proteins (HSP70 and HSP90) in Anopheles culicifacies mosquitoes with respect to variations in temperature in India.

BACKGROUND: Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, is a state on India's eastern coast along the Bay of Bengal. Odisha remains relatively less well known internationally, yet it plays a crucial role in public health and environmental research, particularly in vector-borne disease surveillance and climate vulnerability studies. Odisha experiences extreme temperatures, and Anopheles culicifacies mosquitoes are known vectors of malaria. In response to heat stress, mosquitoes express multiple heat shock proteins (HSPs), which can modify their gene expression. METHODS: To investigate HSP expression in

Prediction of pressure-induced new ordered phases in binary uranium-iron alloys.

The potential incorporation of uranium (U) into the Earth's core has been proposed as a significant internal heat source, facilitated by its chemical affinity and possible alloying with iron (Fe) under extreme pressure conditions. However, experimental studies of U under extreme conditions remain challenging, and as a consequence, pressure (P)-induced phase transitions are still underexplored for both U and its compounds. In this work, we investigate the structural behavior and stability of binary uranium-iron (U-Fe) compounds under extreme conditions using high-throughput crystal structure se
