A comparative study of the immunohistochemical localization of a presumptive proctolin-like peptide, thyrotropin-releasing hormone and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the rat central nervous system.

A proctolin (PROC)-like peptide was studied immunohistochemically in the hypothalamus, lower brainstem and spinal cord of the rat using an antiserum against PROC conjugated to thyroglobulin. Neuronal cell bodies containing PROC-like immunoreactivity (PROC-LI) were observed in the dorsomedial, paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus and in the nucleus raphe magnus, nucleus raphe pallidus, nucleus raphe obscurus and nucleus interfascicularis nervi hypoglossi in the medulla oblongata. Fibers containing PROC-LI were seen in the median eminence and in other hypothalamic nuclei, an

Neuregulin-1 isoforms are differentially expressed in the intact and regenerating adult rat nervous system.

Our knowledge on Neuregulin-1 (Nrg-1) during development of the nervous system is increasing rapidly, but little is known about Nrg-1-ErbB signaling in the adult brain. Nrg-1 is involved in determination, proliferation, differentiation, and migration of neurons and glial cells in the developing brain. In the peripheral nervous system, Nrg-1 signaling is required for Schwann cell differentiation and myelination, and establishment of neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). Multiple alternative splicing of Nrg-1 was shown, but correlation of its structural and functional diversity was rarely addressed. T

[Chronic facial pain due to a brainstem cavernoma].

Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia is almost always associated with pathological nerve/vessel contact. Symptomatic forms of trigeminal neuralgia include cases of multiple sclerosis, infratentorial tumours and postherpetic neuralgia. Vascular malformations causing neuralgia have rarely been reported. We present the case of a 55-year old woman, who suffered from facial pain and ptosis on her left side. Repeated neurological examinations as well as repeated magnetic resonance imaging did not lead to a definite diagnosis or therapy. The pain suddenly stopped three weeks before admission and only a sl

Rapid estimates of neuron number in the confocal microscope combined with in situ hybridisation and immunocytochemistry.

A rapid counting protocol is described which combines the optical disector and Cavalieri methods on non-embedded slices of fixed tissue viewed in the confocal laser scanning microscope. By eliminating the embedding stage and avoiding the need to align adjacent sections in the z plane for counting, considerable time savings are gained over physical disector methods. It also allows the remaining non-embedded sections to be used for other purposes, such as in situ hybridisation and immunocytochemistry. Starting with fixed brainstem, it was possible in less than 2 h to determine the total number o

[Neuroanatomy of the optic, trigeminal, facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves (author's transl)].

1. The intracranial and intraorbital course of the optic nerve is described concisely, the intracanicular one in full details. Apart from the wide and small sections of the optic canal, its axis opposite to the cranial planes, the coating of the canal and the adjacency to the paranasal sinuses and arteries are exactly described. 2. At the trigeminal nerve the trigeminal ganglion, its roots and also the mandibular nerve have great importance in the practical medicine considering thermo-coagulation or surgery of the trigeminal nerve. This segments and also the adjacency of the fifth nerve to the

Aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation and arteriovenous fistula in posterior fossa compression syndrome.

To discuss the problem of neuroradiological preoperative procedures in patients with therapy-resistant facial pain, we present 3 case examples of vascular processes in the cerebellopontine angle (aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, arteriovenous fistula). The microsurgical treatment in combination with artificial embolization is described. The vascular causes of microvascular compression at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve and malformations involving the nucleus caudalis are reviewed.

Cytoarchitectonic basis for safe entry into the brainstem.

This work is a continuation of the anatomical study in which safe approach zones through the floor of the fourth ventricle--infrafacial and suprafacial--were morphologically and morphometrically defined (Acta Neurochir (1997) 139: 1014-1019). The purpose of cytoarchitectonic study was to analyze correlation between morphometry of the facial colliculus and hypoglossal triangle and localization of the corresponding cranial nerves nuclei in the brainstem tegmentum in order to verify morphometrical borders of the previously defined zones. Morphometrical evaluation of the fourth ventricle floor of

Blepharospasm hemifacial spasm and tremors possibly due to isolated caudate nucleus lesions.

Isolated caudate nucleus lesions have only rarely been documented to cause focal extrapyramidal dysfunction. Two cases with possible infarcts in the head of left caudate nucleus presenting with contralateral tremors and blepharospasm with hemifacial spasm are reported. The possible mechanisms for such a presentation are discussed.

Do GABA uptake inhibitors herald a new generation of GABA-ergic drugs for trigeminal neuralgia?

Anticonvulsant drugs are the initial treatment of choice in trigeminal neuralgia. Historically, carbamazepine is and remains the gold standard. Many similarities between the pathophysiologic phenomena observed in epilepsy models and neuropathic pain models justify the rationale for the use of anticonvulsants in the management of neuropathic pain disorders. We have evidence that there is a high intensity of Gamma-aminobutyric acid transporters in the trigeminal sensory nuclei, and that Gamma-aminobutyric transporters expression was increased in the spinal trigeminal nucleus of rats after facial

Central projections and motor nuclei of the facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves in the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii.

Most of the information about the anatomy of the fish's cranial nerves was collected in the first two decades of this century. Experimental analysis of the VIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial nerves by modern tract tracing techniques started about 20 years ago. Several species have been investigated to date, including one species of Agnatha (Myxinoidea), two species of elasmobranchs, and species of some orders of Teleostei like Cyprinidae, Siluriformes, Perciformes, and Gadidae. The sensory and motor nuclei of the VIIth, IXth, and Xth cranial nerves of Gnathonemus petersii were studied by anterograde

Reflex blepharospasm associated with bilateral basal ganglia lesion.

A patient with a bilateral striatal lesion secondary to anoxia presented reflex blepharospasm associated with parkinsonism and dystonia in the limbs. The blink reflex excitability curve was enhanced and the R-2 response prolonged as in patients with essential blepharospasm. The findings in this patient support the notion that blepharospasm may be secondary to basal ganglia dysfunction through abnormal facilitation of reticular formation neurons controlling facial nucleus motoneuron excitability.

Morphological changes in the cochlear nucleus of congenitally deaf white cats.

Investigations in animal models and humans have indicated that congenital deafness produces degenerative changes in the central auditory pathway. The cochlear nucleus is the first central structure that receives cochlear input, and may be considered the origin of ascending auditory pathways. In this context, we studied congenitally deaf white cats, who express early onset cochlear receptor loss, in order to assess the nature of structural changes in cells of the cochlear nucleus. It is conceivable that pathologic alterations in higher auditory structures are transneuronally distributed through

Prevention of denervated muscle atrophy with accelerated nerve-regeneration by babysitter procedure in rat facial nerve paralysis model.

PURPOSE: The "babysitter" procedure is a reconstruction technique for facial nerve complete paralysis and uses the movement source from the healthy facial nerve with a cross-nerve graft. First, an end-to-side neurorrhaphy is performed between the affected facial nerve trunk and hypoglossal nerve for continuously delivering stimuli to the mimetic muscles for preventing the atrophy of mimetic muscles. Despite favorable clinical results, histological and physiological mechanisms remain unknown. This study attempted to establish a model for the "babysitter" procedure and find its efficacy in rats

Neuregulin-1 released by biodegradable gelatin hydrogels can accelerate facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery of traumatic facial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Neuregulin-1 is an essential axoglial signal required for peripheral nerve development, and evidence that neuregulin-1 is also required for effective nerve repair is growing. In this study, the effects of neuregulin-1-impregnated gelatin hydrogels on nerve regeneration and functional recovery after anastomosis of the facial nerve were investigated in a rat model of traumatic facial nerve paralysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four adult male rats underwent complete resection of the facial nerve trunk, followed by end-to-end anastomosis with epineural sutures. The animals

Nucleus caudalis dorsal root entry zone lesioning for the treatment of anesthesia dolorosa.

Deafferentation facial pain (anesthesia dolorosa) can occur after injury of the first-order trigeminal nerve. It is often debilitating and difficult to treat. The authors report the treatment of anesthesia dolorosa in a 69-year-old man with a 7-year history of pain. The pain occurred after an open resection of a right trigeminal neuroma. After treatment with medications failed, the patient was treated with nucleus caudalis (dorsal root entry zone) lesioning. His facial pain was immediately and completely eliminated. The authors describe the technique of this central neuroablative procedure, an

Numbness in the tip of the tongue and lower lip caused by thalamic hemorrhage.

Although patients with isolated oral syndrome or facial sensory loss following stroke of thalamic ventroposteromedial (VPM) nucleus have been reported, there have been no reports of numbness in the tip of the tongue and lower lip. Furthermore, symptoms in the tip of the tongue caused by stroke are typically characterized as gustatory sensory disturbances. A 62-year-old hypertensive man experienced an acute onset of severe numbness in the left tip of the tongue and ipsilateral lower lip. Neurological examination revealed no other abnormalities except for the aforementioned numbness. Head comput

Facial nerve axotomy in mice: a model to study motoneuron response to injury.

The goal of this surgical protocol is to expose the facial nerve, which innervates the facial musculature, at its exit from the stylomastoid foramen and either cut or crush it to induce peripheral nerve injury. Advantages of this surgery are its simplicity, high reproducibility, and the lack of effect on vital functions or mobility from the subsequent facial paralysis, thus resulting in a relatively mild surgical outcome compared to other nerve injury models. A major advantage of using a cranial nerve injury model is that the motoneurons reside in a relatively homogenous population in the faci

Facial presentations of primary headache disorders.

Background Many patients with mid-face or lower face craniofacial pain are diagnosed, based on accompanying signs and symptoms and features other than location, as either atypical migraines or atypical TACs. Distinguishing features of headache disorders as a cause of facial pain include the temporal pattern of pain, associated symptoms including light and sound sensitivity and nausea, cranial autonomic symptoms, and the lack of local triggering among others. Results An intraoral neurovascular pain has been observed, and was termed neurovascular orofacial pain (NVOP). Due to its location, and s

After facial nerve damage, regenerating axons become aberrant throughout the length of the nerve and not only at the site of the lesion: an experimental study.

After facial nerve trauma, aberrant regeneration is associated with synkinesis. Animal models of mechanical nerve guides or reparative cell transplants at the site of a lesion have not been shown to improve disorganized regeneration. We examined whether this is because regenerating axons become disorganized throughout the length of the nerve and not only at the site of the lesion. In rats (n = 12), retrograde fluorescent tracer techniques were used to establish that most of the temporal branch fibres were carried in the superior half of the facial nerve trunk. In two further groups of rats (n

Evaluation of cellular activity in response to sleep deprivation by a comprehensive analysis of the whole mouse brain.

Sleep deprivation (SD) causes several adverse functional outcomes, and understanding the associated processes can improve quality of life. Although the effects of SD on neuronal activity in several brain regions have been identified, a comprehensive evaluation of the whole brain is still lacking. Hence, we performed SD using two different methods, gentle handling and a dedicated chamber, in targeted recombination in active populations 2 (TRAP2) mice crossed with Rosa-ZsGreen reporter mice and visualized cellular activity in the whole brain. Using the semi-automated post-imaging analysis tool S
