BACKGROUND: Fallopian tube cancers are rare neoplasms. These malignancies are thought to behave biologically and clinically like ovarian cancer. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical behavior and outcome of fallopian tube and ovarian cancer.
METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was reviewed to identify women with tumors of the fallopian tube (FT) and ovary (OV) diagnosed between 1988 and 2004. Demographic and clinical data were compared, and the impact of tumor site on survival was analyzed using Cox models and the Kaplan-Meier method.

73 women suffering from primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube underwent surgical excision of their tubes. The tissue was embedded in paraffin and investigated for HER-2 oncogene amplification with a quantitative polymerase chain reaction method. DNA could be extracted and successfully prepared in 65/73 samples. None of the tissue samples exhibited amplified the HER-2 oncogene. Anchored fallopian tube through the drain tube is rare. We present a case of a 27-year-old female patient who underwent right salpingectomy with the fenestrated drain tube in the pelvic cavity. A 45-year-old postmenopausal woman from a rural area presented with a painless lower abdominal lump.
