Study of Chemical Compositions and Anticancer Effects of Paris polyphylla var. Chinensis Leaves.

Paris polyphylla var. chinensis (Franch.) Hara is a perennial herb belonging to the Trilliaceae family. Ultraperformance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/Q-TOF MS) was used to detect the composition of different fractions of Paris polyphylla var. chinensis leaves. Meanwhile, the extracts of different fractions were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against four selected human cancer cell lines and one human normal epithelial cell line based on the MTT assay method. Multivariate statistical analysis was performed to screen differential compounds and

Changes in the Harpagide, Harpagoside, and Verbascoside Content of Field Grown Scrophularia lanceolata and Scrophularia marilandica in Response to Season and Shade.

Scrophularia lanceolata Pursh and Scrophularia marilandica L. are two common species within the Scrophulariaceae family that are endemic to North America. Historically, these species were used by indigenous peoples and colonialists to treat sunburn, sunstroke, frostbite, edema, as well as for blood purification, and in women's health. Several iridoid and phenylethanoid/phenylpropanoid glycosides detected in these species, such as harpagoside and verbascoside, possess anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties. Due to the presence of anti-inflammatory metabolites and the historical uses

Dissemination of information on visceral leishmaniasis from schoolchildren to their families: a sustainable model for controlling the disease.

A model for the dissemination of information on visceral leishmaniasis from schoolchildren to their families was evaluated in two schools in Caeté, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Age ranged from 9 to 17 years in the two schools, one receiving the intervention (with 92 students) and the other serving as the control (96 students). All the students attended a class and received a pamphlet on visceral leishmaniasis. The intervention consisted of a homework assignment in which the student discussed the class content and pamphlet with a family member. Knowledge by family members (n = 100) on visceral l

Household responses to malaria and their costs: a study from rural Sri Lanka.

A study of the cost of malaria at the household level, community perceptions, preventive measures and illness behaviour linked to the disease was undertaken in 5 villages in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. The surveyed community had a high knowledge of malaria, although side effects of antimalarial drugs were often confused with symptoms of the disease. The community sought prompt diagnosis and treatment at 'western-type' facilities, with 84% making use of government facilities as their first choice and 16% preferring private facilities. The preventive measures used were burning coils (54% of famil

Phytophotodermatitis due to Ficus carica.

The genus Ficus belongs to the Moraceae (the mulberry family). Figs can cause irritant or phototoxic reactions. Phytophotodermatitis is a common cutaneous phototoxic reaction. Contact with plant-derived phototoxic substances (furocoumarins or psoralens) followed by sunlight exposure produces the clinical lesions. Here, we present a case of phytophotodermatitis after contact with fig fruits and leaves. The vesicular dermatitis was primarily located in areas of vitiligo.

The importance of maintaining spinal precautions.

Spinal injuries are devastating, often leaving the patient paralyzed or with a permanent deficit. Aspiring athletes may not be able to persue their dreams secondary to a spinal injury; families are often left without a major wage earner to support them; and individuals are dependent upon others for the fulfillment of their basic needs. Education is essential for the prevention of primary and secondary spinal injuries; nurses play a key role in both these areas.

Causal effects of specific gut microbiota on spinal stenosis diseases: a two-sample mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Although recent observational studies and clinical trials have indicated a strong association between the gut microbiota and spinal stenosis diseases, the causal relationship between them remains unclear. METHODS: Based on large-scale genome-wide association studies, we employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to analyse the causal relationships between the gut microbiota (GM) and 3 spinal stenosis diseases: adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), lumbar spondylolisthesis (LS), and spinal stenosis (SS). MR analysis was performed using the inverse variance weighting (IVW) me

Dimensions of hospital nurses' quality of working life.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study describing the quality of working life of nurses in Taiwan. The purpose of the study was to gather data on which to base a questionnaire to be used in further research. BACKGROUND: Nurses often complain of overwork and underpay. Problems persist with nurses' job satisfaction, stress, organizational commitment and intent to leave. 'Quality of working life' is a system of analysing how people experience work: it relates to job satisfaction, intent to leave, turnover rate, personality and work stress. However, reliable information on hospital nurses' qualit

Developmental and light effects on the accumulation of FtsH protease in Arabidopsis chloroplasts--implications for thylakoid formation and photosystem II maintenance.

The chloroplast ATP-dependent metalloprotease FtsH is involved in the degradation of unassembled proteins, the repair of photosystem II (PSII) from photoinhibition, and, apparently, the formation of thylakoids. In Arabidopsis, it is encoded by a family of 12 genes. However, the products of only four of them, FtsH1, 2, 5 and 8, have been found in chloroplasts to date. Mutations in two of these, FtsH2 and 5, demonstrate a visible phenotype of variegated leaves, with the phenotype of the FtsH2 mutant being more pronounced. Moreover, the degree of variegation appears to be dependent on development

Where Do They Come From and Where Do They Go? Socioeconomic Patterns in Dog Acquisition and Rehoming.

This research examines the ways people acquire dogs in the US as well as the ways the dogs leave the household and the way these differ by income level in seven geographically diverse study communities. A web-based panel survey was distributed and received 6318 responses. Individuals were asked a series of demographic and socioeconomic questions as well as how they acquired their current dogs, how previous dogs left their household, and where they left to. The results indicate that the likelihood of acquiring a dog through friends and family decreased monotonically as income increased, while t

[A study of social needs and human relations of residents of a nursing home for the physically handicapped].

Eighty-three physically disabled persons living in a nursing home for the physically handicapped were interviewed regarding family, daily living, and hope for the future. The results were analyzed from the point of view of their social needs and human relations. Concerning relations with the family, 76.8% were quite satisfied with their families. Satisfaction appeared to be dependent on their being able to communicate with their mother. In the nursing home, one bedroom was shared with 3 or 4 persons, and residents received a variety of care from female staff daily. While 50.6% of the residents

Infantile presentation of X linked retinoschisis.

Five infants who presented with nystagmus and/or strabismus were found to have bilateral highly elevated bullous retinoschisis involving the macula. Haemorrhage was present within the schisis cavity or the vitreous in four patients. The bullous retinoschisis eventually reattached spontaneously leaving pigment demarcation lines. A family history of X linked retinoschisis (XLRS) was known in two of the patients but in the other three subsequent investigation showed other male family members to be affected. It is important to recognise this uncommon presentation of XLRS so that the correct diagno

Five years after introduction of an opt-out consent system for organ donation; lessons learned from England and the Netherlands.

Five years after changing from opt-in to opt-out consent systems in England and the Netherlands, we examine the impact on donor registrations, consent rates, donor numbers, and reflect on lessons learned. Opt-out legislation was implemented in May 2020 in England and July 2020 in the Netherlands. In England, 44% of the population is now registered; 40% recording an opt-in decision and 4% an opt-out decision. In the Netherlands, mandated donor registration resulted in the entire adult population having their decision recorded: "Yes, I want to be a donor" (34%), "No objection" (24%), or "No, I d

Retirement: Fostering Physician Well-being Over the Career Life Cycle.

This manuscript is the last chapter in a series of 5 articles considering physician well-being during the course of a career. It focuses on the retirement stage, which follows planning for retirement and deciding when and how to retire. We view retirement as a process, characterized by recalibrating professional and personal activities while maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning in life. Some retirees may continue to work in medicine by seeing patients part-time or mentoring medical students, residents, and junior colleagues. Others may leave their lifelong work and seek joy and meaning i

Disability Evaluations: Common Questions and Answers.

Disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits at least one major life activity. Family physicians are often asked to assess patients with disabling conditions that can impact insurance benefits, employment, and ability to access needed accommodations. Disability evaluations are needed for short-term work restrictions following a simple injury or illness and for more complex cases involving Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income, Family and Medical Leave Act, workers' compensation, and personal/private disability insurance claims. Abnormalities of sexual differentiation: evaluation and management.

Normal male and female sexual differentiation begins with gametogenesis. Both male and female sexual differentiation follow a timetable of events with predictable development of the gonads, internal genital ducts, and the external genitalia. Completed sexual maturation occurs during the pubertal years. Abnormalities of sexual differentiation may occur at any step along the way. The abnormalities may result in abnormal differentiation of the gonads, the internal genital ducts, or the external genitalia. The end result of these abnormalities produces predictable clinical syndromes. While many of
