Venom of Euplectrus separatae causes hyperlipidemia by lysis of host fat body cells.

Although the lepidopteran larva Pseudaletia separata is attacked by the gregarious ectoparasitoid Euplectrus separatae, it continues to feed and grow. Lipid concentration in the hemolymph of the parasitized host was higher than that of the nonparasitized host from 3 to 8 days after parasitization. Artificial injection of parasitoid venom also elevated lipid concentration in the host hemolymph. One day after venom injection the host's fat body contained many lipid particles, but most of the lipid particles disappeared 7 days later. Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed th

Tracking body fat distribution during growth: using measurements at two occasions vs one.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether within-individual variation is a factor in the generally reported poor tracking of central body fat distribution (CBFD) during development and whether two measurements of CBFD during each measurement occasion would improve the estimate of tracking over time. METHODS: A longitudinal study compared the results of two measurements of body fat (BF) and CBFD during each measurement occasion to the results of one measurement of BF and CBFD during each occasion every 4 months over 1-3 y. A total of 345 boys and 333 girls in three age cohorts of 8, 11 and 14 y at bas

Evidence for bone mass and body fat distribution relationship in postmenopausal obese women.

The measurement of bone mass, a reliable predictor of osteoporotic fractures, in obese subjects has yielded conflicting results and bone mass has been reported to be elevated, normal or decreased. These observations indicate that factors other than body weight may be involved in the less risk for osteoporosis in obese subjects. In order to clarify the role of body fat distribution on bone density we studied sixty postmenopausal overweight/obese women with Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25 kg/m(2). Thirty five age-matched, nonobese postmenopausal women, served as controls. Bone mineral density (BMD

Body fat distribution, peripheral indicators of androgenic activity, and blood pressure in women.

This report analyzes the association between blood pressure and three indicators of peripheral androgenic activity (PIAAs): body fat distribution, hirsutism, and sebum production. Furthermore, it analyzes the associations among these PIAAs to understand whether they are indicators of the same androgenic pattern. The study was conducted among 314 healthy women, aged 35-69 years, participating in the baseline examination of the Study of Hormones and Diet in the Etiology of Breast Cancer (ORDET), an Italian cohort study of breast cancer. Body fat distribution was measured as the ratio of waist-to

Conicity: A new index of body fat distribution-what does it tell us?

"Conicity" (C) is an index of body fat distribution which expresses an individuals waist circumference relative to the circumference of a cylinder generated with that persons weight and height assuming a constant for body density (Valdez [1991] J. Clin. Epidemiol. 44:955-956). The more central a person is in fat distribution, the higher the value of C. In a pilot study of cardiovascular reactivity and dimensions of anger and hostility in 60 African-, Anglo-, and Hispanic-American adolescents, anthropometry and sexual maturation were determined to assess their mediating influence on the relatio

Usefulness of Body Fat and Visceral Fat Determined by Bioimpedanciometry versus Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference in Predicting Elevated Values of Different Risk Scales for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND: Obesity constitutes a public health problem worldwide and causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (MALFD), the leading cause of liver disease in developed countries, which progresses to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. MAFLD is associated with obesity and can be evaluated by validated formulas to assess MAFLD risk using different parameters such as the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). However, these parameters do not accurately measure body fat. As MAFLD is strongly associated with obesity, we hypothesize that measuring body and visceral fat by electrical bioim

Combined effects of dietary protein type and fat level on the body fat-reducing activity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in rats.

The interaction of dietary protein type and fat level on the body fat-reducing activity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was studied in male rats fed diets containing casein (CAS) or soy protein (SOY) as a protein source with low fat (LF, 6.0% soybean oil) or high fat (HF, 13.0% soybean oil) combinations for 4 weeks. CLA was added at the 1.0% level to all diets. The weight of perirenal adipose tissue tended to be lower in the SOY groups than in the corresponding CAS groups, and the difference between the LF diets was significant. The weight of epididymal adipose tissue showed a similar but in

Sima, a Drosophila homolog of HIF-1α, in fat body tissue inhibits larval body growth by inducing Tribbles gene expression.

Limited oxygen availability impairs normal body growth, although the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In Drosophila, hypoxic responses in the larval fat body (FB) disturb the secretion of insulin-like peptides from the brain, inhibiting body growth. However, the cell-autonomous effects of hypoxia on the insulin-signaling pathway in larval FB have been underexplored. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of overexpression of Sima, a Drosophila hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) α homolog and a key component of HIF-1 transcription factor essential for hypoxic adaptation,

Laterality and sex differences in tactile detection and two-point thresholds modified by body surface area and body fat ratio.

Tactile detection and two-point discrimination tests are commonly used in neurological examinations. However, questions remain about the influence of both body and patient characteristics on test thresholds. The left side of the body has sometimes been reported more tactilely sensitive than the right, and females are said to be more sensitive than males. We measured tactile detection and two-point discrimination thresholds on the finger, palm, and forehead of a large sample of young adults (N=171), examining laterality and sex differences, and the effects of body surface area (BSA) and body fa

No Effect of Body Fat on Fat Oxidation Rates in Lean and Overweight Females When Aerobic Fitness is Controlled and Muscle Mass is Similar.

Fat oxidation (FATox) rates during exercise are largely determined by exercise intensity, aerobic fitness status, and body composition. FATox is proposed as a noninvasive means for assessing metabolic health in females. Overweight (OW) females rely less on fat than lean (LN) females during submaximal exercise although this remains unclear as previous studies have failed to control for aerobic fitness. This study compared FATox during submaximal exercise through indirect calorimetry between twenty female participants (N=20; mass: 63.1±9.0 kg; fat-free mass: 45.2±3.9 kg; fat mass: 17.8±6.0 kg; h

Association of Body Fat Mass and Fat Distribution With the Incidence of Hypertension in a Population-Based Chinese Cohort: A 22-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies on the association between the incidence of hypertension and the presence and distribution of body fat. The aim of this article was to evaluate this association. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were obtained from the China Health Nutrition Survey, a 22-year cohort study of 12 907 participants. Body mass index and triceps skinfold thickness were used as markers of body fat, whereas waist circumference (WC) was used as a marker of fat distribution. Cox regression was used to examine the association of body mass index, WC, and skinfold thickness with the inciden

Abdominal fat analyzed by DEXA scan reflects visceral body fat and improves the phenotype description and the assessment of metabolic risk in mice.

Clinical studies have demonstrated a strong relationship between visceral fat content and metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and liver steatosis. Obese mouse models are an excellent tool to study metabolic diseases; however, there are limited methods for the noninvasive measurement of fat distribution in mice. Although micromagnetic resonance imaging and microcomputed tomography are the "gold standards" in the measurement of fat distribution, more economical and accessible methods are required. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is an effective method in characterizing fat conten

Comparative Utility of Body Fat and Visceral Fat Measured by Bioimpedance Versus BMI and Waist Circumference in Predicting Elevated Cardiovascular Risk Scores.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a key modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the most effective anthropometric index for identifying individuals at elevated cardiovascular risk (CVR) remains debated. Body fat (BF) and visceral fat (VF) measured by bioimpedance may provide greater discriminatory capacity than body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC) when applied to validated CVR scales. To compare the predictive performance of BF and VF with BMI and WC for identifying elevated CVR according to Framingham vascular age, SCORE vascular age, and SCORE2 in a large occupational

Brain alterations associated with overweight evaluated by body mass index or body fat index in an elderly population: the PROOF study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a complex health issue in which the brain plays a role yet to be determined, especially in the elderly. Indeed, in the ageing population, the balance between fat and lean mass is different; thus, the co-influence between the brain and obesity may differ between the elderly and younger subjects. Our main goal is thus to explore the relationship between the brain and obesity using two different approaches to measure obesity: body mass index (BMI) and an index centred on fat mass, the body fat index (BFI). SUBJECTS/METHODS: Among the 1,011 subjects of the PROOF

Incidence and predictors of fractures in older adults with and without obesity defined by body mass index versus body fat percentage.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine and compare risk factors associated with incident fractures in older adults with and without obesity, defined by both body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage. METHODS: 1,099 older adults (mean ± standard deviation age = 63.0 ± 7.5) years, participated in this prospective cohort study. Obesity status at baseline was defined by BMI (≥30 kg/m2) obtained by anthropometry and body fat percentage (≥30% for men and ≥40% for women) assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Total hip and lumbar spine areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were

Fat-Containing Soft Tissue Lesions of the Limbs and Body Wall-A Pictorial Essay.

Lipomatous tumours are frequently encountered on imaging. The spectrum of lipomatous tumours ranges from simple lipomas, which can be monitored clinically, to high-grade liposarcomas, which require timely, multidisciplinary management. The presence of fat within lesions may also be observed in non-lipomatous tumours, as well as in a variety of non-neoplastic conditions. This pictorial review examines the key imaging characteristics of primary lipomatous tumours and other fat-containing soft tissue lesions that can be found in the limbs and body wall.

The association between percentage body fat and lipid profiles in different phenotypes of PCOS.

OBJECTIVES: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder linked to metabolic disturbances and increased cardiovascular risk. While the Rotterdam criteria classify PCOS into distinct phenotypes, the impact of percentage body fat (PBF) on lipid profiles across these subtypes remains unclear. This study aims to assess whether the association between PBF and lipid parameters differs among PCOS phenotypes. The research question is: "Does the relationship between PBF and lipid profile vary across PCOS phenotypes defined by the Rotterdam criteria?". MATERIAL AND METHODS: A
