Associations between depressive symptoms with suicide behaviors and negative relationships with mother and father in early adolescents: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent-parent negative relationships may favour depressive symptoms only (DS<inf>only</inf>) and more strongly those plus suicide ideation (DSSI) or attempt (DSSA) in early adolescents (10-16 years). We assessed their associations which remain poorly addressed. METHODS: This study included 1256 middle-school adolescents from north-eastern France (mean age 13.5±1.3). They completed a questionnaire gathering socioeconomic features, academic performance, substance (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other substances) use, relationships with father and mother, depressive symptoms, las

Health related quality of life in parents of children with speech and hearing impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing impairment and specific language disorder are two entities that seriously affect language acquisition in children and reduce their communication skills. These children require specific treatment and higher levels of care than healthy children. Their language abilities also strongly influence parent-child interactions. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of the parents of hearing-impaired children and the parents of children with speech difficulties (specific language disorder). METHODS: Our study subjects included 349 parents

Psychological symptoms and associated psychosocial factors among fathers attending a tertiary children's hospital in Nepal.

Little has been done to focus on paternal mental health in Nepal despite evidence that fathers' depression, anxiety, and stress can hurt family functioning and child development. This research measured the prevalence of depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms among fathers visiting a tertiary children's hospital in Kathmandu and analyzed the related psychosocial variables.A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Kanti Children's Hospital, Kathmandu, among 312 biological fathers of children under two years. Data on psychosocial factors, including stressful life events, financial bur

Associations Between Parenting Stress, Parenting Behaviours and Language Abilities in Autistic Preschoolers: A Study with Mothers and Fathers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research shows that language abilities in autism are highly heterogeneous and that parents play a crucial role in children's development. However, the bidirectional relationships between parenting stress, parenting behaviours and children's language abilities in autism remain under-researched. Furthermore, fathers are often excluded from autism parenting research. This study therefore aimed (1) to compare mothers and fathers with respect to the levels of self-reported parenting stress and behaviours and (2) to examine associations between parenting stress, parenting behavi

Marital interaction prior to parenthood predicts parent-child interaction 9 years later.

The well-established association between marital interaction and child well-being is sometimes interpreted as evidence that couple behavior "spills over" to affect parenting and child well-being. Nearly all such studies begin after couples become parents, however, raising the possibility that preexisting effects of children on the marriage are creating or inflating this association. To address this possibility, we observed 84 newlywed couples prior to parenthood as they engaged in standardized laboratory-based, problem-solving and social support interactions. We then used actor-partner interde

Improving family functioning and wellbeing among families of children with disabilities in Rwanda: an application of the SAFE child protection model.

BACKGROUND: Families of children with disabilities in low-resource settings face heightened challenges to family functioning and wellbeing. Improving a child and caregiver's environment in these settings requires a broader understanding of the family ecosystem. This study aims to investigate factors that should be considered to enhance family functioning and inform family-centered interventions. METHODOLOGY: We conducted 34 in-depth interviews with 30 caregivers of children with disabilities aged 6-8 years enrolled in a larger cluster randomized trial of the Sugira Muryango parenting interven

Cognitive and emotional differences between abusive and non-abusive fathers.

OBJECTIVE: Abusive fathers perpetrate a substantial portion of child physical abuse. Despite this, little is known about how they differ from non-abusive fathers. This study compared a broad range of cognitive and affective factors between physically abusive and non-abusive fathers. METHODS: Abusive (n=24) and non-abusive (n=25) fathers completed standard measures assessing their experience and expression of anger, mental health, parenting stress, and their empathy and perceptions of children's socio-emotional signals. RESULTS: Abusive fathers differed from comparisons on almost all construc

Parents of children with developmental disorders: Family hardiness and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Raising a child with developmental disorder is often related to higher stress levels for both mothers and fathers. The aim of the present study was to investigate relationships between resilience, family hardiness, life satisfaction and parental stress among parents of children with and without disabilities. METHOD: Twenty-eight pairs of parents of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, 15 of a child with Down Syndrome and 25 of a child without disability took part in the study. All parents completed four questionnaires independently. RESULTS: Significant differences between grou

Do hostile attribution biases in children and parents predict relationally aggressive behavior?

Relatively little is understood about the role of hostile attributions in children's use of relational aggression with peers, or about the impact of family processes on children's attributions about ambiguous provocations. This cross-sectional study investigated associations among hostile attributions made by children, mothers, and fathers, and children's use of relational aggression with peers. The sample included 91 children in Grades 3-5 (43 girls), and their mothers (n = 90) and teachers (n = 88). Fathers also participated for a subsample of children (n = 53). Results showed that relationa

Does parent-child attachment play a role in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression? Evidence from a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the impact of childhood maltreatment on child depression has been relatively limited. And few studies have investigated the potential mechanisms of father-child attachment and mother-child attachment. In terms of research design, most studies have focused on cross-sectional designs. The few studies employing longitudinal designs often mix between-individual and within-individual levels of analysis. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the influence of early childhood maltreatment on child depression through a longitudinal research design, with a focus on the

Do children separated from fathers have higher anxiety levels? A comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature from India on effect of fathers' deployment on the mental health of children. This cross-sectional analytical study investigates the difference in anxiety levels of children whose fathers are deployed in a field location and compares it with children currently located with their fathers. METHOD: Data were collected in an army school from 200 children aged 10-17 years with fathers deployed in field locations (n = 99) and fathers currently residing with the children (n = 105) via interviewer administered and self-completed Screen for Child Anxiety-Related

Family training: supporting mothers and fathers in the transition to parenthood.

This study discusses the views of mothers and fathers on family training and on how family training supports them in the transition to parenthood. The data were collected in 1993, using a questionnaire submitted about 9 weeks after the birth of a child. The same questions were asked of the 189 mothers and the 127 fathers who replied. According to the results both mothers and fathers consider it essential that their views and expectations are given due attention in the planning of family training. Specific issues that were thought to require priority attention in family training were the actual

Parental Responsivity and Child Communication During Mother-Child and Father-Child Interactions in Fragile X Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Past research shows that parentally responsive behavior toward the child positively influences language development in both neurotypical children and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including those with fragile X syndrome (FXS); however, most studies have focused exclusively on the mother-child relationship. The current study examined relationships between parent behavior (i.e., responsivity and behavior management) and child language performance in both mother-child and father-child interactions, as well as relationships between child characteristics and bo

The role of parent-child attachment in toddlers' executive functions: a longitudinal two-parent study.

This longitudinal study examined the respective contributions of father-child and mother-child attachment to children's later executive functions (EF) during toddlerhood. The sample included 88 Canadian toddlers (51% boys) and their parents (89% White) visited in their homes at about 13 (T1) and 19 (T2) months of age. At T1, father-child and mother-child interactions were evaluated using the Attachment Q-Set. At T2, toddlers' hot and cool components of EF were assessed using behavioral tasks. Findings from two sets of analyses converged to suggest that developing secure attachment relationship

A pilot evaluation of 'Working Out Dads': promoting father mental health and parental self-efficacy.

AIM: Approximately one in 10 fathers experience mental health difficulties in the early years of parenting, yet there is a dearth of evidence-based interventions to promote fathers' mental health at this time. Therefore, the aims of this study were: (1) to obtain preliminary data on the short-term changes in mental health symptoms and parenting self-efficacy for fathers of young children (aged 0-4 years) participating in Working Out Dads (WOD) and (2) to explore fathers' experiences of participation in WOD. METHOD: The sample consisted of 57 fathers who had at least one child aged between 0 a

[A solitary central maxillary incisor and holoprosencephaly in siblings].

In families in which holoprosencephaly seems to be inherited by a rare dominant autosomal mutation, some individuals exhibit a single central maxillary incisor (SCMI). This anomaly was considered a minimal manifestation of the gene for holoprosencephaly. We report on a family, in which one child suffered from median cleft lip and palate and alobar holoprosencephaly, whereas the other child only had a SCMI. In the father and his sister lateral upper incisors were absent. Therefore the question is raised as to whether this anomaly may be related to the same condition.
