Dietary supplementation with nano-composite of copper and carbon on growth performance, immunity, and antioxidant ability of yellow-feathered broilers.

New feed additives as antibiotics substitutes are in urgent need in poultry production. Nano-composite of copper and carbon (NCCC), a novel copper donor with stronger antibacterial properties, is expected to promote broiler growth and diminish the negative effects of excess copper (Cu). Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of NCCC on growth performance, immunity, and antioxidant ability of yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 240 1-d-old male yellow-feathered broilers were selected and randomly divided into four groups, with five replications per group and 12 birds p

Feather-weight cryostructured thiourea-chitosan aerogels for highly efficient removal of heavy metal ions and bacterial pathogens.

Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021-0.0103 g/cm3) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64-447.26 m2/g), outperforming the com

Morphology and distribution of scales, dermal ossifications, and other non-feather integumentary structures in non-avialan theropod dinosaurs.

Modern birds are typified by the presence of feathers, complex evolutionary innovations that were already widespread in the group of theropod dinosaurs (Maniraptoriformes) that include crown Aves. Squamous or scaly reptilian-like skin is, however, considered the plesiomorphic condition for theropods and dinosaurs more broadly. Here, we review the morphology and distribution of non-feathered integumentary structures in non-avialan theropods, covering squamous skin and naked skin as well as dermal ossifications. The integumentary record of non-averostran theropods is limited to tracks, which ubi…

Innovative Artificial-Intelligence- Based Approach for the Biodegradation of Feather Keratin by Bacillus paramycoides, and Cytotoxicity of the Resulting Amino Acids.

The current study reported a new keratinolytic bacterium, which was characterized as Bacillus paramycoides and identified by 16S rRNA, and the sequence was then deposited in the GenBank (MW876249). The bacterium was able to degrade the insoluble chicken feather keratin (CFK) into amino acids (AA) through the keratinase system. The statistical optimization of the biodegradation process into AA was performed based on the Plackett-Burman design and rotatable central composite design (RCCD) on a simple solid-state fermentation medium. The optimum conditions were temperature, 37°C, 0.547 mg KH2PO4,

High feather mercury concentrations in the wandering albatross are related to sex, breeding status and trophic ecology with no demographic consequences.

Hg can affect physiology of seabirds and ultimately their demography, particularly if they are top consumers. In the present study, body feathers of >200 wandering albatrosses from Possession Island in the Crozet archipelago were used to explore the potential demographic effects of the long-term exposure to Hg on an apex predator. Variations of Hg with sex, age class, foraging habitat (inferred from δ(13)C values), and feeding habits (inferred from δ(15)N values) were examined as well as the influence of Hg on current breeding output, long-term fecundity and survival. Wandering albatrosses dis…

Different space preferences and within-host competition promote niche partitioning between symbiotic feather mite species.

Obligate symbionts (including parasites, commensals and mutualists) often share host species and host-based food resources. Such symbionts are frequently distributed unequally among hosts with different phenotypic features, or occupy different regions on a host. However, the processes leading to distinct within-host symbiont distributions remain obscure. We aimed to test whether distinct in-host symbiont distributions arise as the outcome of species-specific habitat preferences or interspecific competition, and how host phenotype influences such processes. To this end, we studied the distribut

Feather corticosterone reveals effect of moulting conditions in the autumn on subsequent reproductive output and survival in an Arctic migratory bird.

For birds, unpredictable environments during the energetically stressful times of moulting and breeding are expected to have negative fitness effects. Detecting those effects however, might be difficult if individuals modulate their physiology and/or behaviours in ways to minimize short-term fitness costs. Corticosterone in feathers (CORTf) is thought to provide information on total baseline and stress-induced CORT levels at moulting and is an integrated measure of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity during the time feathers are grown. We predicted that CORTf levels in northern common eide…

Egg production response of laying chickens to feather clipping, cool water and aspirin during hot weather conditions.

An 8-week trial was conducted between March and May (hot-dry season) to determine effects of water temperature, feather clipping and aspirin on egg production of chickens. The treatments tested were hens given ordinary drinking water (control), cool water (100 g ice block per L) and aspirin (0.3 mg per L of ordinary water) and hens whose feathers were clipped (about two thirds of body feathers clipped). At 32 weeks of age, 120 Lohmann brown layer chickens of similar live weights were randomly divided into 12 groups of ten hens each and assigned to the treatments in triplicate using a completel…

Feather meal: a previously unrecognized route for reentry into the food supply of multiple pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs).

Antimicrobials used in poultry production have the potential to bioaccumulate in poultry feathers but available data are scarce. Following poultry slaughter, feathers are converted by rendering into feather meal and sold as fertilizer and animal feed, thereby providing a potential pathway for reentry of drugs into the human food supply. We analyzed feather meal (n = 12 samples) for 59 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) using EPA method 1694 employing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). All samples tested positive and six classes of antimicrobials were det…

Magnetic resonance imaging of intracranial tissue accumulations in domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos f. dom.) with feather crests.

The crested breed of domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos f. dom.) has been described as a variety which has high pre- and postnatal mortalities, malformations in skull and brain anatomy, and several central nervous deficiencies. In addition, intracranial tissue accumulations have been diagnosed in purebred Crested ducks. The incidence, heredity and inheritance of these accumulations as well as their pathogenesis are still generally unknown. The aims of this study were to examine the head of Crested ducks, plain-headed duck breeds, and their crossbreeding relating to the incidence of intracranial

Solvent-Free Supramolecular Polymerization for Feather-Like Nanostructured Chiral Fluorescent Polyurethanes with Multimodal Chiroptical Stimuli Responsiveness.

Chiral supramolecular polymers with stimuli-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are highly desirable for smart flexible optoelectronic devices, but remain rarely reported. Here, a simple solvent-free supramolecular polymerization for preparing chiral polyurethanes is presented by in situ induced self-assembly strategy, using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-based isocyanate prepolymers and macromolecular polyols as precursors, achieving precise control over polymer chain assembly with spot-like arrangement. More importantly, by further incorporating a π-conjugated luminescent dihyd
