Fetal gonadoblastoid testicular dysplasia (FGTD) is an extremely rare lesion, which, in its original description, appeared in association with hydrops fetalis and other malformations. Its phenotype strongly resembles gonadoblastoma, although in contrast with that rare tumor, FGTD is not associated with the intersexual states or gonadal dysgenesis that accompany such neoplasm. Two reports described an association of FGTD and a morphologically similar lesion with Walker-Warburg syndrome. However, we have not confirmed such an observation, although a nonspecific muscle disorder was found in one o

C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) belongs to the natriuretic peptide family that consists of three structurally related peptides with a 17-am … ce that this peptide is also involved in various reproductive processes as well as in embryonic and fetal development. In rodents, CNP and its receptor are highly expressed in the uterus and ovaries with specific regulation during the estrous cycle. During pregnancy, CNP mRNA is detectable in mice embryos and shows an organ-specific expression in maternal reproduct …

During the last few decades our understanding of the possible role of thyroid hormones during brain development has increased and contributed to resolve previously discordant hypotheses, although much remains to be clarified. Thyroid hormones of maternal origin are present in the fetal compartment, despite the very efficient uterine-placental 'barrier', necessary to avoid potentially toxic concentrations of free T4 and T3 from reaching fetal tissues before they are required for development. T3 remains low throughout pregnancy, whereas FT4 in fetal fluids increases rapidly to adult levels, and

Classically, development of the human enteric nervous system has been characterized by the early appearance (between 9 and 12 weeks' gestation) of adrenergic and cholinergic nerves. The development of peptidergic innervation occurs much later. Recent studies have indicated that nitric oxide is involved in the nonadrenergic noncholinergic innervation of the gut, mediating its relaxation. The authors have investigated the ontogeny of nitrergic (nitric oxide synthase-containing) neurons of the developing gut. Bowel segments from the esophagus, pylorus, and ileocecal and rectosigmoid regions of 14

We studied the topography of the elbow region with special regard to the ulnar nerve during fetal life. Plastinated 600 microns thick sections through the right and left arms of ten fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) of 105 to 360 mm and of a newborn infant were investigated. The ulnar groove does not appear on the dorsal side of the medial humeral epicondyle earlier than at a crown-rump length of 130 mm. It provides the entrance into a formerly described fibro-osseous tunnel called the cubital tunnel. Its floor is formed by the posterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament, which bulg

Influence of maternal thyroid status on fetal and neonatal development of rats has been studied. Maternal hypothyroidism resulted impaired reproduction and intrauterine growth retardation of offsprings as revealed by their reduced body weight, heart weight, body length and tail length. Offsprings born to hypothyroid mothers showed very high rate of mortality and none of them survived beyond eight days. Maternal hyperthyroidism did not cause any abnormality on reproduction. Hyperthyroid mothers showed increased rate in body weight gain during pregnancy which was associated with increased weight

Thirty-two inbred Wistar rats (study group) were exposed to trichloroethylene 100 p.p.m. in air for 4 h daily from day 8 to day 21 of pregnancy. A control group (31 rats) was exposed to the same experimental conditions but without the addition of trichloroethylene. All the rats were sacrificed on the 21st day of pregnancy and the ovaries, uterus, liver, lungs, heart and the fetuses were examined. There was no evidence of teratogenesis, but a delay in fetal maturation was suggested by reduced fetal weight (P less than 0.05) and by an increase in bipartite or absent skeletal ossification centres

INTRODUCTION: Tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA), a BPA alternative, has been identified as a potential toxin, yet its reproductive toxicity remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gestational TCBPA exposure on fetal development and placental function, focusing on syncytialization and TauT expression.
METHODS: Pregnant ICR mice were divided into three groups: TCBPA-treated (50 mg/kg/day), vehicle-treated (corn oil), and control (water). Treatments were administered until embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5) and 18.5 (E18.5). Embryos and placentas were collected at E12.5 fo…

Background/Objectives: Fetal growth restriction (FGR), historically termed intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), is a multifactorial condition in which the fetus fails to reach its genetically determined growth potential, most often due to placental insufficiency. Beyond its link with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, FGR has been associated with long-term cardiovascular risk through early-life programming. The developing fetal heart is vulnerable to chronic hypoxia and nutrient deprivation, potentially inducing structural and functional alterations with lifelong consequences. Thi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR) is associated with distinct alterations in cortical sulcation and midline brain structures compared with small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and appropriately grown (AGA) fetuses, and to examine how these changes relate to cerebroplacental redistribution.
STUDY DESIGN: This prospective cross-sectional study included 84 LO-FGR, 64 SGA, and 120 AGA fetuses examined between 32 and 36 weeks' gestation. Targeted neurosonography assessed cortical sulcation, corpus callosum length, and cranio-cortical width, together with Dopple

The placenta establishes a maternal-fetal exchange interface to transport nutrients and gases between the mother and the fetus. Establishment of this exchange interface relies on the development of multinucleated syncytiotrophoblasts (SynT) from trophoblast progenitors, and defect in SynT development often leads to pregnancy failure and impaired embryonic development. Here, we show that mouse embryos with conditional deletion of transcription factors GATA2 and GATA3 in labyrinth trophoblast progenitors (LaTPs) have underdeveloped placenta and die by ~embryonic day 9.5. Amoxicillin is widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases during pregnancy; however, the effects of prenatal amoxicillin exposure (PAE) on fetal development remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of PAE on fetal cartilage at different stage-, dose-, and course. Pregnant Kunming mice were orally administered 300 mg/kg·d (converted from clinical dose) amoxicillin on gestational days (GD) 10-12 or 16-18 (mid or late pregnancy stage), 150 or 300 mg/kg.d amoxicillin on GD16-18 (different doses), 300 mg/kg·d amoxicillin on GD16 (single course) o…

As a possible preventative measure for brain dysfunction in the fetal alcohol syndrome, the effect of zinc or vitamin E supplementation together with ethanol on the fetal cerebrum was investigated in rats. Contrary to our previously published data showing the good effect of 0.01% zinc with 30% ethanol on fetuses, the administration of 0.01% zinc with 20% ethanol, 0.03% vitamin E with 20% ethanol or 0.02% vitamin E with 10% ethanol during pregnancy did not result in a good effect on the body and cerebral weights of fetuses on gestational day 21. Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) in newborns is a rare but serious condition and potentially life-threatening disorder, often initially confused with congenital heart disease due to overlapping echocardiographic findings in the late third trimester. Evidence on prenatal predictors of postnatal PH is limited. We aimed to describe detailed third-trimester echocardiographic findings associated with postnatal PH in infants with prenatally suspected CoA based on a retrospective case series. Methods: We reviewed 18 years of fetal echocardiography (2004-2022) in a tertiary maternal-fetal-neona

Epithelia from the lobular part of submandibular salivary gland, glandular stomach, intestine and colon of 14-day C3H/HeN fetuses, and from pituitary gland and pancreas of 12-day fetuses were recombined with 14-day mammary fat pad precursor tissue and syngrafted under the kidney capsule. The normal organogenetic development typical of the epithelium occurred. The same epithelia taken from earlier stage fetuses did not develop normally. Thus, 14-day fetal mouse mammary fat pad precursor tissue has the capacity to support normal organogenesis of various fetal epithelia of developmentally advance

OBJECTIVE: Fetal lower urinary tract obstruction occurs in approximately 1:3000 pregnancies. Standard vesicoamniotic shunting is fraught with malfunctioning in upto 60% of cases. We hereby report the development and application of a novel and reliable shunt.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with lower urinary tract obstruction were offered the novel shunt among other standard management options. Shunting involved the placement of a double disk device with a standard double pig-tail catheter. All patients signed informed consent.
RESULTS: Four patients have been treated with the novel shunt. I
