Challenges in diagnosing and treating ossifying fibroma in adolescent patients - a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a non-common benign fibrous-osseous lesion with highly aggressive behavior and tends to recur. Here, we report a case where Ossifying Fibroma (OF) was diagnosed in an adolescent female patient and was treated by marginal mandibular resection to avoid esthetic and functional defects in the future. CASE PRESENTATION: OF was diagnosed in a 13-year-old woman incidentally. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) examination showed a hypodense lesion compromising the vestibular table and 34 and 35 teeth. An incisional biopsy was performed to determine the histopat

Recurrent benign ossifying fibroma of the orbit - clinical, radiological profile and management options in a child.

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm which may be mistaken for other similar lesions due to overlapping clinical and radiological features. We report a 5-year-old male child with recurrent benign OF of the orbit. The child had two episodes of recurrence in a span of 18 months. Computed tomography (CT) of orbit showed a large, lobulated expansile fibro-osseous lesion involving the greater wing of sphenoid and orbital roof without intracranial extension. An excisional biopsy was done though an orbital approach. Histopathology showed fibroblast rich stroma with bony trabecula

Recurrence of a Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma as a Pyogenic Granuloma Within 1 Week: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral ossifying fibromas (POFs) and pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are non-neoplastic reactive lesions of gingiva that usually affect young females and are usually located in the anterior maxilla. It is possible to misdiagnose POF as PG, peripheral giant cell granuloma, or odontogenic tumors. Histopathologic examination is recommended and is essential for an accurate diagnosis of such lesions, and differential diagnosis is also important because POFs have a tendency to recur. CASE PRESENTATION: A clinical case of gingival swelling in the mandibular left second premolar and first

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma in child. A follow-up of 4 years. Report of a case.

Peripheral cement-ossifying fibroma is a relatively common gingival growth of a reactive rather than neoplastic nature, whose pathogenesis is uncertain. It predominantly affects adolescents and young adults, with peak prevalence between 10 and 19 years. We report here the clinical case of a 5-year-old girl with disease duration of 3 years, who was followed up for 4 years, showing a gingival health and normal radiopacity of bone.

Extensive central ossifying fibroma of the maxilla: a case report with description of an alternative surgical technique.

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a fibrous-osseous lesion containing fibrous tissue and varying amounts of calcified tissue. Although the lesion is preferentially located in the jaws, it may be found elsewhere. It usually affects patients during their third and fourth decades of life, with a female predilection. The mandibular premolar-molar area is the most common site. Radiographically, COF may present a radiolucent, radiopaque or a mixed appearance. This article reports a case of an extensive COF in the maxilla of a 62-year-old patient. Intraoral examination revealed a swelling with undef

A case of hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour syndrome found in the treatment of an ossifying fibroma in the maxillary bone.

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour (HPT-JT) syndrome is characterized by parathyroid tumours as well as by ossifying fibromas of the mandible and maxilla, renal cysts, or Wilms' tumours. Recently, the gene responsible for HPT-JT syndrome has been identified as the HRPT2 tumour suppressor gene. In an 18-year-old male, a tumour in the maxilla was first diagnosed as an ossifying fibroma. During biochemical screening before surgery, the patient received a diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. Neck computed tomography scanning showed a parathyroid tumour. Surgical excisions to remove the jaw tumour

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus in a child presenting with isolated pain in the nasal region.

The authors present a case of a previously healthy 8-year-old girl who presented with pain on the right side of the nose (bony part) radiating to the frontal and temporal regions. Physical examination was normal, whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the facial region revealed a tumor limited to the right ethmoidal sinus with a small extension to the medial wall and the upper part of the nasal septum. The tumor was removed by using a 5-degree nasoscope and sent for pathologic examination, which revealed a cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus. This is a rare condition, and MRI

Osteofibrous dysplasia (ossifying fibroma of long bones). A report of four cases and review of the literature.

Osteofibrous dysplasia (ossifying fibroma of long bones) is a rare fibroosseous lesion. Only about 64 cases have been reported in the English literature. It is most commonly found in the tibia and fibula of a child ten years of age or younger. Of the four cases reported in this study, however, only one patient was younger than ten years of age. In two cases, the lesions were unusually located in the radius and ulna respectively. The other two cases had the usual tibial involvement. The last case had two recurrences after curettage before the patient was ten years of age. The other three patien

Unique Imaging Findings of a Calvarial Ossifying Fibroma Successfully Managed With Surgery and Definitive Intent Radiotherapy.

This case report describes a 6-year-old female neutered Boxer dog diagnosed with calvarial ossifying fibroma presenting with left-sided periocular swelling, nasal discharge, epistaxis, and subtle exophthalmos. Diagnostic investigations included serial computed tomography (CT; five studies over 14 months), ultrasound-guided needle aspiration, surgical biopsy, and CT-guided core biopsy. CT identified a well-delineated, non-mineralized, strongly enhancing expansile lesion within the orbital portion of the left frontal bone with retrobulbar tissue displacement and a lobular sinonasal mass causing

[A case report and literature review of juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma originating from the uncinate process].

This paper reported a case of juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma(JTOF) originating from the uncinate process. The main clinical manifestation was nasal obstruction and epiphora. Contrast-enhanced sinus CT revealed an irregular heterogeneous soft tissue mass centered in the right uncinate process, with involvement of the right anterior ethmoid sinus, maxillary sinus ostium, frontal process of the maxilla, and partial nasolacrimal duct. The solid components of the tumor demonstrated enhancement on contrast imaging. The patient underwent endoscopic resection of the right sinonasal tumor under

Comparison of characteristic features and local recurrence in syndromic versus non-syndromic multifocal non-ossifying fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Multiple non-ossifying fibromas (MNOF) could be presented with other extraskeletal anomalies (syndromic) or not (non-syndromic). In this study, we aimed to compare characteristic features and local recurrence between symptomatic syndromic and non-syndromic MNOFs. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with symptomatic MNOF were included in this study, comprised of 30 patients without the café-au-lait spot (non-syndromic) and five with café-au-lait spots plus other signs of neurofibromatosis type 1 (syndromic). Characteristic features of the patients and lesions were compared between syndro

SATB2 is frequently expressed in ossifying and non-ossifying peripheral oral fibroma of the gingival region but not in reactive fibromatous lesions from other intraoral sites.

Ossifying and non-ossifying peripheral oral fibromas (POF) of the gingival and alveolar mucosa are localized, cellular, small fibrous nodular lesions likely resulting from diverse external/ internal physical and chemical irritation or injuries. A central nidus of metaplastic woven bone characterizes and defines the ossifying variant. The inherent tendency of these lesions to ossify remains elusive. We herein analyze SATB2 expression as osteoblastic transcription and differentiation factor in 28 gingival POFs (10 of them ossifying) and compare them to 28 fibrous lesions from different non-gingi

Copy number alteration profiling facilitates differential diagnosis between ossifying fibroma and fibrous dysplasia of the jaws.

Ossifying fibroma (OF) and fibrous dysplasia (FD) are two fibro-osseous lesions with overlapping clinicopathological features, making diagnosis challenging. In this study, we applied a whole-genome shallow sequencing approach to facilitate differential diagnosis via precise profiling of copy number alterations (CNAs) using minute amounts of DNA extracted from morphologically correlated microdissected tissue samples. Freshly frozen tissue specimens from OF (n = 29) and FD (n = 28) patients were obtained for analysis. Lesion fibrous tissues and surrounding normal tissues were obtained by laser c

Trametinib for multiple non-ossifying fibromas due to KRAS mosaic mutations: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: KRAS mosaic activating variants are the main cause of non-ossifying fibromas (NOFs), the most common benign lesion of the growing skeleton. Multifocal NOFs cause bone fragility, and no specific treatment is currently available. METHODS: We report two children, carrying mosaic KRAS variants (p.G13D and p.A146T), presenting with oculoectodermal syndrome and recurrent fractures due to progressive polyostotic NOFs. To assess the impact of these mutations on KRAS function, we conducted transient KRAS overexpression in HEK293 cells and then tested the effect of the MEK-inhibitor trameti

A Case of Juvenile Trabecular Ossifying Fibroma Arising from the Maxilla in a 2-Year-Old Child.

An ossifying fibroma is a fibroosseous lesion from the maxilla and mandible. Its histopathological subtypes include juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF) and juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma. It commonly affects young individuals and is invasive in nature. A 2-year-old girl with a 2-week history of swelling in the left infraorbital region and a reduced opening of the left eye was referred to our department. Clinical examination revealed a diffuse bone-like swelling extending from the left infraorbital region to the left buccal region. Computed tomography revealed a well-defined 2

Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumor Syndrome: A Case Diagnosed After the Removal of Multiple Ossifying Fibromas of the Jaws.

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome (HPT-JT) is a hereditary neoplastic disorder caused by a pathogenic variant in the CDC73 tumor suppressor gene. It is characterized by increased values of PTH, ossifying fibromas of the jaws, and in some cases neoplasms of the kidneys/or the uterus. We present a case of a 65-year-old male who had several jaw tumors with secondary infection requiring treatment. Previous medical history included parathyroid adenomas with a long history of increased PTH and kidney tumor. This prompted genetic testing, which confirmed a heterozygous CDC73 pathogenic variant,

A unique case of multiple non-ossifying fibromas with polyostotic monomelic distribution and aggressive clinical course.

Multiple non-ossifying fibromas (MNOFs) occur either isolated or in association with other anomalies, are usually localized in the long bones of the lower limbs, may be radiographically confused with other skeletal lesions, and tend to heal spontaneously with the completion of the skeletal growth. Segmental distribution, either monomelic or polymelic and ipsilateral, is rare and commonly observed in the context of developmental diseases known as "RASopathies", which are caused by mutations in genes that encode components or regulators within the Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling p
