Differentiated adipose-derived stem cells promote the recovery of nociceptor function in rats.

The loss of nociceptive function in the skin because of trauma or surgery can impair the quality of life. The recovery of nociceptor function is mediated by two different axonal responses: nerve growth factor (NGF)-dependent collateral sprouting of undamaged nerves and NGF-independent regeneration of damaged nerves. We reported previously that adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) can transdifferentiate into Schwann cell (SC)-like cells (dASCs) and that transplantation of dASCs increases axonal density in skin flaps. In the present study, we used an animal model that allowed for the individual ass

Investigation of the hydrodynamic properties of a new MRI-resistant programmable hydrocephalus shunt.

BACKGROUND: The Polaris valve is a newly released hydrocephalus shunt that is designed to drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain ventricles or lumbar CSF space. The aim of this study was to bench test the properties of the Polaris shunt, independently of the manufacturer. METHODS: The Polaris Valve is a ball-on-spring valve, which can be adjusted magnetically in vivo. A special mechanism is incorporated to prevent accidental re-adjustment by an external magnetic field. The performance and hydrodynamic properties of the valve were evaluated in the UK Shunt Evaluation Laboratory, Cambri

Spiral computed tomography: a novel diagnostic approach for investigation of the extracranial cerebral arteries and its complementary role in duplex ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: For the detection of atherosclerotic lesions of the extracranial cerebral arteries, duplex ultrasonography (US) is an established operator-dependent method, whereas arteriography is associated with the not-insignificant risk of embolic complications. Spiral CT is a promising novel diagnostic tool that allows noninvasive, operator-independent diagnosis of obstruction of extracranial cerebral arteries. The aim of our prospective study was to evaluate in a clinical setting the complementary role of duplex US and spiral CT. METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared the results obtained indepen

The bacterial community of the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum).

BACKGROUND: The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum), an important vector of a wide range of human and animal pathogens, is very common throughout the East and Midwest of the USA. Ticks are known to carry non-pathogenic bacteria that may play a role in their vector competence for pathogens. Several previous studies using the high throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies reported the commensal bacteria in a tick midgut as abundant and diverse. In contrast, in our preliminary survey of the field collected adult lone star ticks, we found the number of culturable/viable bacteria very low. METHOD

Tuberculoid leprosy: An in vivo microvascular evaluation of cutaneous lesions.

Tuberculoid leprosy (TT) is characterized by cutaneous lesions called plaques. Although microvascular ultrastructure of TT patients' skin is well-documented, little is known about functional aspects of their microcirculation. We aimed, for the first time, to evaluate, in vivo, the microcirculation of TT cutaneous lesions. Seven TT patients, males, under treatment were included in the study. The spectral analysis of frequency components of flowmotion (endothelial, sympathetic, myogenic, cardiac and respiratory) was performed using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Endothelial dependent and indepen

A portable fast gas chromatography-mass spectrometry workflow for quantification of biogenic volatile organic compounds with humidity‑dependent sensitivity correction.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) regulate key atmospheric and ecological processes but remain challenging to quantify in the field due to reactivity, mixture complexity, and variable ambient humidity. A portable fast Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) workflow was developed, coupling needle-trap (NT) sampling with a compact GC-MS system to enable BVOC quantification with minimal logistics. A 15-compound gas standard (28-91 µmol mol⁻¹) was generated under controlled water vapor pressures (ea = 0.7-2.3 kPa), and two independent calibrations sessions were performed to assess

Suppression of axonal conduction by sinusoidal stimulation in rat hippocampus in vitro.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS), also known as high frequency stimulation (HFS), is a well-established therapy for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor, and shows promise for the therapeutic control of epilepsy. However, the direct effect of DBS on neural elements close to the stimulating electrode remains an important unanswered question. Computational studies have suggested that HFS has a dual effect on neural elements inhibiting cell bodies, while exciting axons. Prior experiments have shown that sinusoidal HFS (50 Hz) can suppress synaptic and non-synaptic cellular activity in several in

Simultaneous molecular imaging of redox reactions monitored by Overhauser-enhanced MRI with 14N- and 15N-labeled nitroxyl radicals.

MRI has provided significant clinical utility in the diagnosis of diseases and will become a powerful tool to assess phenotypic changes in genetically engineered animals. Overhauser enhanced MRI (OMRI), which is a double resonance technique, creates images of free radical distributions in small animals by enhancing the water proton signal intensity by means of the Overhauser effect. Several studies have demonstrated noninvasive assessment of reactive oxygen species generation in small animals by using low frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy/imaging and nitroxyl radicals. Mineralocorticoid receptor activation and blockade: an emerging paradigm in chronic kidney disease.

Slowing the progression of chronic kidney diseases (CKDs) requires new and effective treatment approaches. Aldosterone classically acts on the distal nephron: it facilitates sodium reabsorption, potassium secretion, and participates in blood pressure control. Recently, new targets of aldosterone have been described including the heart and the vasculature, and other kidney cells such as mesangial cells, podocytes, and renal fibroblasts. The pathophysiological implications of increased mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) expression and activation (either dependent on aldosterone or direct ligand-ind

Brief Novel Visual Experience Fundamentally Changes Synaptic Plasticity in the Mouse Visual Cortex.

LTP has been known to be a mechanism by which experience modifies synaptic responses in the neocortex. Visual deprivation in the form of dark exposure or dark rearing from birth enhances NMDAR-dependent LTP in layer 2/3 of visual cortex, a process often termed metaplasticity, which may involve changes in NMDAR subunit composition and function. However, the effects of reexposure to light after dark rearing from birth on LTP induction have not been explored. Here, we showed that the light exposure after dark rearing revealed a novel NMDAR independent form of LTP in the layer 2/3 pyramidal cells

Reversible deactivation of motor cortex reveals that areas in parietal cortex are differentially dependent on motor cortex for the generation of movement.

Primates are characterized by specializations for manual manipulation, including expansion of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and, in Catarrhines, evolution of a dexterous hand and opposable thumb. Previous studies examined functional interactions between motor cortex and PPC in New World monkeys and galagos, by inactivating M1 and evoking movements from PPC. These studies found that portions of PPC depend on M1 to generate movements. We now add a species that more closely resembles humans in hand morphology and PPC: macaques. Inactivating portions of M1 resulted in all evoked movements being

Frequency-dependent effects of ELF magnetic field on chromatin conformation in Escherichia coli cells and human lymphocytes.

The effects of magnetic fields of extremely low frequency (ELF, 21 microT r.m.s.) on cells of different Escherichia coli K12 strains and human lymphocytes were studied by the method of anomalous viscosity time dependence (AVTD). Within the frequency range of 6-24 Hz, two resonance-type frequency windows with maximal effects at 9 Hz and 16 Hz were observed in response of GE499 strain. Only one frequency window with maximum effect at 8.5 Hz was found for GE500 cells. These data along with previously obtained for two other E. coli strains, AB1157 and EMG2, indicate that frequency windows are depe

Observation of Spin Splitting in Room-Temperature Metallic Antiferromagnet CrSb.

Recently, unconventional antiferromagnets that enable the spin splitting (SS) of electronic states have been theoretically proposed and experimentally realized, where the magnetic sublattices containing moments pointing at different directions are connected by a novel set of symmetries. Such SS is substantial, k-dependent, and independent of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength, making these magnets promising materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here, combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a systematic study o

Maternal Undernutrition Modulates Neonatal Rat Cerebrovascular Structure, Function, and Vulnerability to Mild Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury via Corticosteroid-Dependent and -Independent Mechanisms.

The present study explored the hypothesis that an adverse intrauterine environment caused by maternal undernutrition (MUN) acted through corticosteroid-dependent and -independent mechanisms to program lasting functional changes in the neonatal cerebrovasculature and vulnerability to mild hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury. From day 10 of gestation until term, MUN and MUN-metyrapone (MUN-MET) group rats consumed a diet restricted to 50% of calories consumed by a pair-fed control; and on gestational day 11 through term, MUN-MET groups received drinking water containing MET (0.5 mg/mL), a corticosteroi

Effects of chronic l-DOPA administration on neurogenic and endothelium-dependent relaxation responses in rabbit corpus cavernosum.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine is a crucial central neurotransmitter that plays a fundamental role in the autonomic and somatic components of penile reflexes in animals and humans. Similar to the erectile responses of dopamine, systemic administration of l-DOPA induces yawning and penile erection in some species. The possible effects of l-DOPA on nitric oxide (NO)-dependent and -independent non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxation responses mediated by electrical field stimulation (EFS) and endothelium-dependent relaxation were investigated in this study. METHODS: Thirty-two adult albino male r

Reward uncertainty asymmetrically affects information transmission within the monkey fronto-parietal network.

A central hypothesis in research on executive function is that controlled information processing is costly and is allocated according to the behavioral benefits it brings. However, while computational theories predict that the benefits of new information depend on prior uncertainty, the cellular effects of uncertainty on the executive network are incompletely understood. Using simultaneous recordings in monkeys, we describe several mechanisms by which the fronto-parietal network reacts to uncertainty. We show that the variance of expected rewards, independently of the value of the rewards, was

Joints and needles: summary of radiosynoviorthesis.

Radiosynoviorthesis is a minimally invasive treatment for inflammatory joint disorders. It is an alternative to surgical synovectomy and is used when systemic treatment and intraarticular glucocorticosteroid injections have failed. This literature review summarizes the effectiveness of this method in various inflammatory joint disorders. A systematic literature search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and DOAJ databases. Depending on the type of inflammation and level of joint destruction, the effectiveness of therapy is 50-80%, up to even 90-100% in hemarthrosis. The present
